This was expected with how quickly he left. Durkin needs to put a staff together, and start recruiting, there was no way he was going to stick around for the bowl game.

Edsall's been gone for over a month and Locksley couldn't say he was going to be the man or not.  The whole staff has been hanging in the wind.  DJ's got to hold the current recruits and somehow get a bunch more to commit to MD, so I'm sure he asked to move on as quickly as possible.  Why would Harbaugh say "no"?

Two things I've learned from the Durkin fiasco:

1. He was not a true "Michigan Man" as evidenced by his untimely departure.

2. Our poor defensive showing could be (not necessarily is) attributed to said untimely departure. Personally, I think it would be naive to assume that he had not been contacted prior to the Ohio State game, although I will acknowledge it is a possibility. Anywho, under the assumption that he was previously contacted regarding the Maryland HC position, his focus for the OSU game may not have been adequate, contributing (along with many other things) to the result we saw on Saturday.

Chris Balas said on the Huge show that Durkin spoke on the phone with Maryland the week leading up to the Ohio State game.

His mind was elsewhere.  FFS he wouldn't even wear an M hat during games.  Good riddance, I hope Jimmy runs it up on him.

Sweet adidas hat, dork.

no one cares about the color of his damn hat.  Just wear something with an ][\/][ on it

I don't care that he interviewed for a different job, I get that he wants a promotion.  Just don't get your ass kicked at the same time in the biggest game of the year.  It's a really bad look.

Hating on D.J. Durkin is unreal.

He was out there on the sideline with Harbaugh, getting in the refs ear, jumping onto the field with the same energy, and punching his fists when anybody made a big play or angry when he was angry at a call.

He did the windmill as Peppers was returning a kick to signal "keep going, it's wide open" on a special teams play.

Durkin was passionate about this team, that's unquestionable.

Overall he fielded an EXCELLENT defense with what he had.

But Durkin's 37 years old.

He was bound for a head coaching job, and was an interim at Florida.

And nobody is going to have the unbelievably interwoven and complex ties and history at Michigan that Jim Harbaugh has (if you wrote a piece of fiction on it, it would come off as cheesy and contrived), from his Dad coaching here, to Bo, to guaranteeing a win over OSU, to being a Quarterback (most coaches are DBs) at Michigan, College & NFL success, coaching against his brother in the SuperBowl, and beyond, the storyline alone is unreal.

Durkin's young, he's hungry (and he showed it), that's why Harbaugh liked him in the first place.

He knows how to find another great DC, he's done it again and again.

This is getting petty now.  It's a hat.

And for people bitching about this guy talking on the phone to MD officials last week, do you really think Harbaugh and his people only talked to Michigan after the OSU game last year?  What's the difference between Harbaugh talking to us or his representation?  Same thing, just different characters.

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if Harbaugh told him to clean out his desk at 3:30pm last Saturday given Harbaugh's previous comments about job shopping mid season and obviously the on-field results.

probably was helped out of his position, office and facilities as quickly as possible by the administration. In the corporate world, they lock your internet and have HR help you leave. Given the apparent attempt to poach Partridge, etc., I can imagine Durkin coaching a bowl game was not even a consideration for the University, or for Harbaugh. Coach Harbaugh will give proper attention to the next hire and the bowl game preparation. I'm not worried.

Guys, an assistant coach took a head coaching job. The leaves change colors. The sun rises and sets. This is what happens. Obviously, those weren't Michigan Trees. A Michigan Tree would remain blue-leafed forever, even in the dead of winter.
