Duncan Robinson to wear the #22 Legends(ish) number

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Okay, so it's not a Legends number with a patch like how Football does things, but the #22 jersey is hanging in the rafters at Crisler Center and players can still be assigned the number without all the fanfare.

Only one number is retired at Michigan and that's #33.

The last Wolverine to wear Bill Buntin's #22 was Blake McClimans.

List of #22s. Buntin's banner was raised on 1/7/2006.

At least with the basketball program, it's always been like this. It was always understood Cazzie's was the only number that would be taken out of circulation once they started "honoring" more jerseys. There was a good, what, almost 10 year gap in between the Cazzie retirement (what was it, '94?) and Rudy T. They've been very quiet about it, no extra hoopla or stupid patches. They're just up there. It's kind of nice, actually.

I wore #22 the first year I played varsity baseball in high school, and put up some pretty good numbers. But in my senior year my number got changed to #12, and I couldn't hit above the Mendoza line.

I blame the number. I'm sure my lack of plate discipline and inability to hit a curve had very little to do with it.

Because his post says Duncan is wearing a "Legends number" which is totally wrong.

22 has been worn by many people since it was honored.  This is not really newsworthy, unless you feel the need to point out you're one of the (many) people who knows that there's only one retired Michigan number.

thread? Maybe I pulled the trigger to quick...although I have found myself up voting WD quite a bit this week. PS - Thanks ken75 for the reveal....you have ruined everything for me. Next you at going to tell me there is a man behind the curtain and the wizard isn't real.

Jason Bossard was one of my all-time favorite Michigan basketball players. Talk to anyone who was around either the football or basketball team back then and they all have absolutely hysterical Bossard stories. Gotta love when he'd get in at the end of a blowout and launch a three over the backboard.

The way it was told to me by a guy who lived with Bossard, once he figured out he wasn't going to play, like, ever behind the Fab Five, he just started hitting the weight room. All the time. He built himself up to the size of a freaking defensive lineman, then lobbied to walk on to the football team. When that was summarily shot down, he just decided to have fun. Ergo, half-court bombs and emphatic bench cheering.

Weren't four other jerseys, specifically Rudy Tomjanovich (45), Phil Hubbard (35), Glen Rice (41), and Bill Buntin (22), eventually retired also? I'm pretty sure this happened during the Amaker years. There are some older articles from The Daily on it as well.

It's very possible I'm having memory lapses, but did each jersey aside from Russell's #33 go from "retired" to "honored" at some point?
