Dumb & Strange Request Re: Maryland 2014

Submitted by Wolverine15 on June 2nd, 2022 at 6:36 PM

Peak offseason post incoming:

I realized that the only Michigan game I have not seen (whether live or on tape delay) since becoming a diehard fan 15+ years ago is Maryland 2014. I was out in California on the day of the game, which was a perfect excuse to ignore the ignominious end to the Hoke era.

For no other reason than to see what happened, I'm interested in watching it, or at least the ostensible highlights. However, no video trace of this game seems to exist online. I've searched high and low and the closest I can get is a video of the MMB's halftime performance. It's strange to me that no Maryland fan or account has commemorated the team walking into the Big House and beating Michigan, but I digress.

If anyone has a lead on literally any footage of this game, I would be indebted to you. Alright, neg away!

Driving home after the Rutger debacle in NJ, I recall the feeling of “the end for Hoke” and begrudgingly accepting the end of his tenure.  Maryland was a new low of “shit, couldn’t even get a win vs the Turtle.”

Those were some dark days.  Harbaugh has resurrected the program.  Now we need repetitive wins vs PSU and OSU.  Win the B10 … again.

It's a Friday, the head boss is gone for 2 weeks vacation and he left orders that we're not to leave early while he's gone. This post is so funny that I'm going to come back to it over and over during the day when I start to get pissed at him, again.

left orders that we're not to leave early while he's gone.

My old boss used to say that too. The lab would be at the bar by 1:30. Hell, I remember a few times walking back into lab to check on reagents and get some data updates and when I'd open one of the lab fridges, there'd be a 12 pack on the bottom shelf. That place didn't pay well but it was a blast working there.

The Supreme Court ruled that all video copies of 2014 games between any combination of Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Penn State and Rutgers be burned and destroyed.  This decision was made on "human rights and unnecessary punishment for the viewer (even if the viewer's favorite team won)" grounds.

Maryland finished 3rd in the East - God was that an awful 5-some of B1G East teams that year!  Not to mention any games those schools played against Illinois & Northwestern that year too (such classics as M00N and Illinois 16, PSU 14).

The beast took it

What a strange time to bring this game up. So 2015-2021 you never thought about this game?

I'm shocked no highlights of this game can be found.

No doubt there. But that 2014 team had some good players on both sides of the ball, so only winning 5 games with that roster is just amazing. They were pretty much the same players (though a year older) that would go on to win 10 games under Harbaugh.

Just goes to show how much coaching matters, I guess.

JMO, going from 5 wins to 10 the next season shows how much the team had checked out.  To lose to Rutgers, Maryland and how awful that season was shows there was zero buy in from them. The next season the defense pitches 3 shut outs, quickly established it was going to be a physical team to recon with just leaves my head scratching on what happened behind the scenes.  But the Dave Brandon taking over team decisions after 2013 has a lot to do with it imo.  I still believe Hoke was checking out when Brandon fired Borges….

I haven’t missed a home game in-person in 11 years, and going back to my student days it’s less than 10 in 20 years.

I can tell you something from every single one of those games (like how we’ve somehow played Western and now Hawai’i more at home in that span than conference opponent Purdue). I can definitively say that I don’t remember one aspect of that game other than it was cold and miserable.

Edit: I remember also the place being half empty yet somehow attendance was announced as being just over 100k (something JUB I believe refutes in 4th and Long).

Why not, if you’re Maryland or Rutgers it doesn’t matter what Michigan team is out there you win you’re celebrating.  No different than when Bama was down and SEC teams got some wins on Bama they hadn’t in a long time.  Their fans don’t go around saying we beat a 5 win bama team, no, they beat Bama regardless.  Same here, they beat Michigan and in their mind it was Michigan, not some random 5-7 nobody.

JMO, we beat Osu last year!  I don’t chalk it up it was just a 10 win osu team, no we beat them to win and it was still Osu regardless of the record…  why, That is our measuring stick, and Michigan is still a measuring stick!

Y'all like OP is not kidding. Youtube, espn, bigtennetwork, fox. The game is NO WHERE. Why is that? You see Michigan vs. EMU from 2005 on youtube for christ sakes.

This footage also happens to be the 18 minutes where Rosemary Woods apparently had her foot on the wrong pedal under the desk, thereby erasing from the dictaphone a vital section from one of Nixon's tapes.

I’ll refresh your memory if you can’t find it:

- Michigan ran a successful fake punt in the first half. Basically a FB draw straight up the middle…I think it was Michigan’s longest play from scrimmage all game.
-Big house was 80% full and the fans booed at attendance announcement of 100,000+
- Mike Weber de-committed in the middle of the game.
- Michigan band and student section was doing the Temptation/“You Suck” chant as the clock expired and Maryland was victorious. Embarrassing lack of awareness.

Unfortunately, I remember the game vividly because I was a student at the time and was fully prepared that my four years of football as a student would be ultimate suckage. Fortunately I was just a sophomore and at least got two years of Harbaugh.

Welcome to the Mandela Effect. You all think we fielded a football team in that year that played Maryland? Us redpills, we know the truth man. There was no 2014, man!

I was there and have absolutely zero idea what happened on the field. Must’ve repressed that awful game. All I remember is getting into a drunk argument with a Maryland student who was sitting in the student section and then just having to hear it from him toward the end of the game. I also remember there was absolutely no way there was more than 90k people at that game and the audience booing when an obviously made up attendance of 100k+ was announced.

I have a copy of the BTN classic replay of the game. Reply with your email address or some other way to get in touch directly and I can get it to you if an abridged copy helps.

This is one of the most degenerate Michigan fandom things I have seen on this board (which is saying something). For that, you have my respect.

Also, while I understand that the home loss to Maryland was in many ways the "ignominous end to the Hoke era," there was a game played a week later in Columbus. Since you brought that season up I looked at the recap for that game and--it wasn't that awful? Michigan had a lead in the 2nd quarter and kept it within a touchdown into the 4th quarter. Michigan kept the game with OSU closer than Oregon would in the first CFP Championship game later that season. Of all the OSU games in the decade between wins, this loss is the most forgotten in my mind, but it was an actually competitive game, given the de facto lame duck status of Hoke and his staff.

Yep, the Drake Johnson game/debut of Cardale Jones. Had a fourth and one defensive opportunity down 7 that would've given Michigan the ball near midfield with enough time to drive the field (and potentially lose for the second straight year on a missed 2PA.) But no stop was made and Zeke Elliot scored a long touchdown on that play instead.

Well say what you will about the overall incompetence of the Hoke era, but he knew what that game meant, and his teams played inspired against vastly superior OSU teams. Could've (should've?) won in 2012, had every chance to win in 2013, and while I don't think they could've done much differently to win in 2014, his team at least went down fighting.

I think Hoke also knew that short of winning that game in Columbus, his time at Michigan was toast. So there was no reason to hold anything back. Empty your playbook, go for the gusto and just see what happens. He literally had nothing to lose.

I could question a lot of things about Hoke's tenure, but I never had to question his desire and commitment to beating OSU.

I was at this game and I have zero recollection of anything that happened. I looked up the game recap and play-by-play and none of it sparks any memory.

That season sucked.
