Dr. Saturday - "Some 'Noles reading on 2nd-grade level?"

Submitted by NHWolverine on
Not Michigan football related but something I thought would be discussion worthy for the board. Transcripts from the NCAA's Committee on Infractions as reported in a Dr. Saturday blog post reveal that some FSU Seminoles from 2006 - 2007 were reading at a 2nd grade level. Here's the notable quote:
Brenda Monk, a learning specialist hired to work with athletes who had learning and physical disabilities, was accused of improperly helping students type, edit and write their papers. Monk, who testified that some of those athletes had a second-grade reading level, was accused of committing academic fraud. In one case, she was said to have let students use a study guide that had answers to exam questions for an online music course.

This is just about as surprising as hearing that Nebraska's O-lines of no-name farm boys in the '80s and '90s were fueled by raw steaks laced with 'roids. That is to say, *not at all*. It's not called a party school for nothin'.

Does this also imply someone other than the athlete took the athlete's college entrance exam? Can't imagine that someone reading at a second grade level could qualify under NCAA standards (unless the athlete has a learning disability that just affects the ability to read but not comprehend and someone else read the exam to them, which is probably permitted).

I read at a 12th grade level in 5th grade and I am far from the smartest person here. I'm not trying to say I have a big penis or I'll kick your ass on the internet! Just giving some perspective on how bad this has to be.

I recently read an FSU fan of some type saying that people who criticize Bobby Bowden are people who care about nothing but wins and losses. I thought that was pretty funny.

I'm taking a class on reading right now, and when you label a kid's reading level, if it is largely different than their own grade level it's inaccurate. The kids getting the 2nd grade level aren't on par with 2nd graders, they read much worse than all of the college students who were also tested. Likewise the 5th grade kid who reads at a 12th grade level just reads better than a vast majority of 5th graders. The tests don't compare actual 2nd graders with the college students, just college students with college students.
