Don Brown Talks Progress on Defense

Submitted by Wolverine In Iowa 68 on

Love me some Don Brown...

Highlights:

On who is stepping up to provide leadership: "fifth-year senior defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr., fifth-year senior linebacker Mike McCray and sophomore defensive tackle Rashan Gary"

He gives a breakdown on which players played a lot last year and why he's not concerned about not having a bunch of starters back like: “Mo Hurst — okay, he wasn’t a starter. He was just one of the most devastating penetrators inside in college football. Just saying.

And my favorite, his opinion of practicing without pads:

He noted he couldn’t judge too much, since the Wolverines had spent the first two days “with your pajamas on,” in non-padded practice.

As always....a great read from the coach

I was lucky enough to have a buddy who works at IMG - and therefore we got to spend the few days around the team a couple years back.  Don Brown is by farrr the loudest coach and hilarious IMO.  Reminds me of Frank Costanza on the practice field, him talking is really like others yelling.  However it appears he is a lot more gentle with the local media and the reporters at Glick and Schem Hall.

There's hate that originates from bad parenting (eg, leaving your kids in the car while you spend a couple hours in the bar with your paramour).

Then there's a type of hate that originates from merely annoying behavior (eg, making your kids listen to Conway Twitty and the Oak Ridge Boys for hours in the car).

I experienced both (separately - one with mom, the other with dad) and I preferred #2 - which sounds like your 'problem.' Kids are resilient.

When asked about the corners, the first player he mentions is none other than Drake Harris.

“I love those guys. All of those guys have a chance to be good. Coach gave me an early birthday present. [Redshirt junior cornerback] Drake Harris had a nice interception yesterday. I love those guys, when they put their hands out and they’re nice and long, and he high-points the ball. It’s fun to see. Hopefully he can continue to take steps, move forward, learn the concepts and play fast — that’s the biggest piece.”

Agreed...but we lose Mone and Hurst...Solomon and co. are going to need to so something this year and build on it next offseason.

The CBs, IMO is the reason this defense won't be as good as last year...the DTs, IMO is the reason next year's D won't be as good.

But we have to realize we're comparing these defenses to an all-time great defense. Many people consider last year's defense the 2nd best defense of the modern era.

I don't see this D or next year's D being as good...BUT, I think both will be Top 10, maybe Top 5 defenses in the country.

What's really going to help the defense next year...the offense and special teams.

To me that's a little unrealistic. Yes, its the 2nd year in the system. But our D-line will have less depth, LBs should be about a push, and DBs will be worse.

That being said, we'll have WAY more talent than BC teams Don Brown made top 5 defenses out of. As long as he is here, I never expect to not have a top 10 defense.

The ceiling of our current defense is probably higher overall, but it won't be better than last year unless the freshmen step in and start playing like upperclassmen right away.

Depth issues are a real concern, especially along the DL. That was not even remotely an issue last year. If no one gets injured we should be alright, but we can't reasonably expect that.

"He wasn’t a starter. He was just one of the most devastating penetrators inside in college football." That's what she said?

"[Hurst] was one of the most devastating penetrators in college football. Just saying."

You know why we are so familiar with the belly rub? Because it happened enough times to remember it. It's not like Hurst just unloaded his shit at South Quad and started workouts a few weeks ago.

If I remember correctly, Mike McCray ended the season on a high note with a monster game in the Orange Bowl. I'm excited to see more of him this year and I hope his best game of the season is against Ohio State, since his dad played there.

Cautiously optimistic about our defense this year. They will create some great opportunities for our offense - hopefully the offense will capitalize on them.
