Is Don Brown on Maryland's short list?

Submitted by Tunneler on November 1st, 2018 at 12:08 PM

A horrifying thought I know.  Just saw the question posed to Steve Lorenz on 247.  Is it possible they could poach a 2nd DC from UM?  Please god, no!

I'm sure he could land a better job than that if he wanted to.  I just hope he doesn't want to, because the money would be there.

Why would he want to step into that shit show?

His position right now is pretty ideal. Harbaugh and crew hand him top 5-10 classes every year and he has complete autonomy to craft the defense into a death star minus the thermal vent.

I don't see anyone really being interested in the MD spot, they'll more likely than not just hand it to Matt Canada.

It sounded to me like he was happy where he was.  Plus he could be in a part of his career where becoming a head coach would no longer appeal.

Yes, he said it either this summer or during spring ball. Basically said  "I have no interest in being a head coach at this stage of my life." Obviously, he can change his mind, but I think he's content with where he is and his role at Michigan.

Don Brown deserves a head coaching job, and he was at Maryland before. It wouldn't be too surprising. That being said, even though Don is a great guy, the optics from the Maryland perspective may not be great

Do you need a reminder of the position Durkin held before Maryland hired him? The optics of hiring a Michigan DC to replace Durkin, whose last job was Michigan's DC, may not look great to an average Maryland fan who doesn't watch interviews or know anything about these potential new coaches

He might be on a list, but Don isn't going to be a head coach. We have the perfect DC. He is a DC lifer and the best in the business. I don't think he even wants to be a head coach.

Maryland would have interest in Brown but I don't know about vice-versa. He's never been a head coach at the FBS level and he's probably had plenty of opportunities before. He's older so starting now doesn't make sense. He's at the best spot he'll probably ever be in terms of talent and how good his defense is. Why would he want to go to the clusterfuck that is Maryland? If he hasn't taken other head coaching jobs before, I'm not sure why he'd go to Maryland of all places.

Because the last time they hired a Michigan DC worked out so well for them

I think Maryland is going to hire a coach with head coach experience this time around. I don't think Don Brown fits that well.

I don't think it's going to be Matt Canada unless he somehow kills it in this closing stretch Maryland has with MSU, @Indiana, OSU, and @PSU. That looks like at least 3 losses there and probably not the momentum that leads to getting hired. Maryland could even lose out and miss a bowl.

I think Maryland has a chance at decent hire because there are going to be fewer Power 5 teams going through the coaching carousel this coming offseason. They could make a run at some decent candidates that are listed in the article linked by the OP. Some of those guys may say no, but it is worth a shot.

Maryland is a trash can and will be even worse after all this trouble. I wouldn’t take that job no matter how much they paid me

I'd guess at this stage of his career he's doing exactly what he wants and isn't interested in the head gig.  Plus he seems to be really enjoying what he's got going and probably wants to see the fruits of his labor in the form of a championship or two...or three.

Nobody with head coaching aspirations and a lick of common sense wants to step immediately into the shitshow that is Maryland.

The Maryland board of trustees or governors or whatever they are exhibit all the signs of being dysfunctionally clueless, the President just resigned, and the AD is very probably an interim guy. That's a recipe for disaster for any new head coach.

Some people should not be head coaches and Don Brown is one of them.  He loves doing what he's doing and likely doesn't want the stress of being the big dog at his age.  In fact, he's said before that he doesn't want to go anywhere else at this point in his career.  And this isn't like the old days where the DC is paid very modestly.  He's making a ton of money.  So, unless he has really rich ambitions, the move up to HC just wouldn't be worth all the extra crap involved in the job.

First, let me preface this by saying that I agree with you and I hope he retires at Michigan. With that said, he was actually pretty damn good as a head coach. From Wikipedia:

In 2004, Brown returned to UMass to take over as its head coach. During his tenure as head coach from 2004 to 2008, UMass posted the best five-year record in school history, 43–19.[2] In his first year, he led the Minutemen to a 6–5 record, including victories over fourth-ranked Colgate, seventh-ranked New Hampshire, and ninth-ranked Maine. During 2005, Brown led UMass to a 7–2 start and a final ranking of #19. That year, the Minutemen defeated fourth-ranked James Madison and handed Delaware their worst home loss in two decades, 35–7.[1]

In 2006, Brown led Massachusetts to the Atlantic 10 conference championship and a finish as runners-up to the national championship. They ended the season ranked No. 2 with a 13–2 record. At home, he set a school record with a perfect 8–0 record in McGuirk Stadium. That season, Brown was named the AFCA Region I Coach of the Year, Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and New England Football Coach of the Year.[1]

In 2007, UMass again won its conference as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. The team advanced to the semifinals and finished the season with a No. 6 final ranking.

Harbaugh played this one perfectly. Says all the time that Brown is an all the great coach, giving him the notoriety and props, maybe to fill that inate desire Brown might want, as a head coach.  I think that will help him stay, over the demand generated by the notoriety.

I digress... Wonder what happens when Mattison leaves.  Hoke would be a good hire at DL, believe it or not . Heck of a recruiter, too. Can pull alot of top players out of Ohia...
