Sorry didn't mean to bash the OP.  I'm ready to run through a wall right now too. Just looking out for some of the people on this site with kids or kids on the site who might take offence.  I personally concur with the verbiage used.

Drew Sharp is at 36:40.

I didn't realize how big of a turd Sharp was trying to be. Good to see Brady give it right back. I got a good laugh out of the "I'm good in Scrabble" line.

Can one of my fellow MGoBloggers who love to transcode stuff like this to YouTube make a non-browser crippling version please? :)

Thanks in advance!

P.S. Or at least the Sharp part - I love seeing a good smack down!

It's pathetic the levels that Rosenberg and Sharp stoop to. UM should revoke these two clowns' media passes and have the DFP send someone more competent, ethical, and respectful.

I was emailing my buddies that I couldn't wait for Sharp to pipe up at the presser. That was the best part by far!. I like how Hoke answered him, then Sharp being the sniveling pin dick he is tried rephrasing it and asking again...Hoke replied, I know what you're saying, but we can't go anywhere without winning the Big 10. Basically, shut the fuck rob parker jr, I don't know you and will not take your bullshit...

Fuk yo coach freep!

Hoke said the goal of the team is to win conference championships. Drew Sharp asked why they wouldn't play for national championships, and called conference titles "consolation prizes." Hoke pointed out that you can't get to the national championship without winning your conference, so teams should focus first and foremost on winning the Big 10. Sharp then asked repeated questions in line with his recent "Michigan is a regional, not national, program" meme, and Hoke responded by repeatedly pointing out that you have to win the conference before you can even have a shot at the national title.

As Brian predicted, Rosenbag has done a 180. I'd be fired up if he admitted to acting without journalistic integrity in trying to take down our program.

Brady Hoke is absolutely killing it at this press conference. Very impressive. UM fans should be fired up.

I agree with the question. Is the goal to win national championships or B1G championships? They are not one in the same and they don not come hand in hand. The opportunity to play in a national championship game comes with winning B1G championships, but winning that game is completely different especially given that the goal is a B1G championship. Bo never won a national championship and I think it has a great deal to do with this mindset. Once you meet your goal there is a sense of completion and an intensity and focus let down.

OK, but this hire is for life like Hoke said. The question is important. Drew Sharp might be an asshole, but the question is a good one and Hoke did a lot of pep-up and coach speak, but as far as actually answering that question he really didn't do a great job of addressing the part of the question about national championships. Brady Hoke flat out said that national championships aren't the goal. If that is the case then what are we here for? It was one of the only questions that was worth ansking. Ermani asked how humbling it was for alumni to be there for him... uhhh very? What kind of question is that? What other answer could you possibly imagine for that question? It was stupid. The Sharp question was not.

Step 1. Win Conference Championship

Step 2. Get selected to National Championship Game

Step 3. Win National Championship Game

You can't get to steps 2 or 3 without step 1. Step 2 is also out of his control. So, you might as well focus on what you can control. Conference Championships are always within our control while National Championships are not. If we get into the game, then it's in our control again and we can worry about it then.

As a side note, the goal is not to win Rose Bowls, but once we get selected to the Rose Bowl after winning the Conference it does become our goal.

if he had said that by winning the big ten we would automatically be a national contender. It just sounded to old school, meat-head big 10 to me. If it is an elite school, than why not just say we want to be a national title contender? I love his passion though... that was good to see.  and anytime he snaps at drew dull, I'm all in.

I hear what you're saying, and for the most part agree.  But it also seems that the whole National Championship game is a crap shoot anymore.  I mean, the system we have isn't really one that invites any real confidence that we've anointed the best team in the nation (at least from my perspective).

I don't know.  Control the games you know you're going to play in and the rest is just kind of out there somewhere with a possibility attached to it.

I also might be giving Coach Hoke to much credit, but who knows.  This is literally the first time I have seen the guy speak in public.

Getting to the NCS and winning the MNC depends on many factors. Among those which have been defined are:

1. Winning a lot of games and being conference champs - going either undefeated or having a early close loss. (except for maybe Notre Dame)

2. Hope that the teams you beat continue to win and beat other good teams.

3. Hope that your public relationships impress voters and pundits from around the country who never actually see your team play a whole game, and look at the final score or what they heard.

4. Hope your team isn't plagued by injuries and crazy game changing bad calls.

No doubt there are other things on this list like weird things coming out like selling game gear for tatoos and getting free cars which can affect things.

Of these many factors the one thing a HC can have a direct effect on is number one, winning games. Too much is made about setting this goal or that goal. OK, we get it, we want to be back in the discussion for the MNC, but let's try to win the Big 10 before we jump ahead. After the past 3 years if we are playing games in November which help decide the Big 10 title rather than if we can get to 6 or 7 games, that will be the first step. I understand the notion that Drew Sharp was advancing that over the past several years dating back to beyond the RR era, the influence of Michigan on the national college football scene has waned - we aren't the leaders in tactics and strategy and we aren't where all the stars are playing, etc. etc. But if we want to get back there, let's focus on what can be done and what is within our power to do something about. Talking about winning the MNC might be cute and make for a good quote, but I'd rather have a coach who was all business and worked towards winning games - the conference titles will follow and we'll be part of the conversation for the MNC. Historically each year there has been a team which has done everything in its power to win out and get to the BCS championship game, and do end up undefeated and untied, and yet still didn't make it, so this belief that getting there is a goal within one's control is a fallacy.

Until there is a playoff, there is no control a coach has over getting team into the national championship game.  For example, Gary Patterson did everything he could this year - they went 13-0 and won a BCS Bowl.  It was 100% successful season - it's not his fault there were two other 12-0 teams that got to play for the natl championship.

I'm fine with the focus "Let's just win the games in front of us, and let the chips fall where they may."

HOWEVA, I will sort of agree that there is more to the life than the B1G (if you want to be an elite program).  If we lose to ND and Alabama, and then go 7-1 winning a B1G championship, that's a good season, but certainly not what we should be shooting for as our highest goal.

I like what other coaches have said - our goal is to win the Rose Bowl.  That's a little higher and speaks to doing well in all your games - conf and nonconf.

Really?  Bo never coached in today's climate where rules are in place requiring you to be a conference champ in order to play in the NC.  I think Hoke's thinking is perfect.  Take care of the conference championship first

The NC is not entirely in any team's control.  Why focus on it?

Tauro

January 12th, 2011 at 3:59 PM ^

Well, you're certainly entitled to that line of thinking, but I believe the goal should be winning the B10 Championship.  I have rarely heard a coach say otherwise from any of the big conferences.  They focus on winning the conference first because failure to do so takes you out of the NC picture.

To me, focusing on the B10 first is key.  If you focus on the NC, put yourself in a position to get there, but for some CPU randing or random voter, you fail to get in, how much of a letdown is that???  I think that would kill the morale of a team more.

If you focus and get the Championship, and lose out on the NC due to a CPU or voter, you certainly have a lot to prove in whatever big bowl game you're in.  Ask TCU how they feel right now.

Despite consistently fielding national championship contenders, Carroll's goal for USC every season was to win the Pac-10 Conference and go to the Rose Bowl. In explaining why, Carroll noted "We can only control getting to the Rose Bowl. [...] Our goal isn't about national championships, because we don't have control of that – that's in somebody else's hands. We found that out years ago [2003], when we were No. 1 but then we were No. 3."

Bo never coached in a national championship game. There wasn't one. If you look at his records, you'll see there are a few one loss seasons where if they had won the Big Ten, they would have probably been playing for a national title in the bowl (although who knows with the politics of it back then). There is one year where we were undefeated (1971) when we did go to the Rose Bowl and lose...but I don't know if that's because they "let up." Far more instances where the former occurred. Winning the Big Ten is the goal and everything after that will fall into place.
