Some of this is personality fit - some longevity.

If Derek and JH clicked well at Stanford, maybe there is a chance.

If Derek think Ed O lasts longer at LSU than JH does at UM, it's all about the stability.

JH will need to recruit a high quality DC who can also recruit, which we didn't see from DB.

Not to mention, they did end up 5-5, which all things considered (losing a ton of talent including the best performance by a QB in many years, losing their QB whisperer, not having any time for a young team to gel), wasn't that bad. They might not be national-championship caliber, without getting QB play like Burrow again, but they will always have plenty of talent to coach.

Well ...... this would be somewhat disappointing, but WM/JH may ultimately have a different plan in-place.

NOTE: Mods should change the title as it implies he ‘has’ when it’s just rumor and speculation.

I’m getting that same feeling like when a recruit that we do want chooses another school so we make up a reason why we didn’t want him in the first place.

Next DC up?!

The fact that you only know about him from his head coaching job means you’re not informed enough to judge him as a DC. He’s a VERY highly thought of DC in the college football landscape.

“I only know about him as a head coach so I’m not impressed with him as a DC,” isn’t really a sound argument.

No high profile DC is coming to this situation. No one even has any idea if Harbaugh will be here.

If Harbaugh stays the DC hired will be a defensive version of Josh Gattis.

I'm not sure why this is getting down voted. I agree. If people think James Franklin is bad, this guy was worse. Franklin took over a bottom feeder program and took it to a bowl game every year. Mason took over for Franklin and his best seasons were back to back 6 - 6 seasons. He didn't recruit as well as Franklin did, and we just lived through a DC that didn't recruit, and we see how that went.

It’s being downvoted because we aren’t talking about hiring this guy to be our head coach. So his success as a head coach (or lack of) is irrelevant.

Being a bad head coach is not indicative of your abilities as a coordinator. He’s a phenomenal defensive coordinator. So shitting on a guy for not succeeding as a head coach at Vanderbilt is dumb, and deserving of downvotes.

Franklin didn't do much at Vanderbilt.  The team was generally ranked about 45th in most fancy stats.  The record was window dressing.  Beat everyone ranked 50 or lower, lose to everyone ranked 30 or higher. Toss in a victory over blue blood having a bad year.

I am not saying he is not a good coach but if you are going to convince me did something at Vandy you are going to have to be more specific.

You generally take a significantly higher risk in going after a young up and comer. Is Harbaugh in a situation where he’s going to take a risk with his future in doubt?

If you’re just taking a job or have a solidified job status, then that’s the kind of guy you probably want. When you’re on the hot seat, you want a proven guy with the ability for a quick fix.
