Hard to find a more likeable guy than Denard.  Which is why he's my favorite to wear the winged helmet.  Some of my greatest memories are he and Devin Gardner lighting it up on the field, sometimes together at the same time.  Both were true blue examples of Michigan Men and I can't thank them enough for their contributions to the team and the school.

To tell you the truth, I am put off that he thanked Urban Meyer. Urban covered up domestic violence. Urban is a piece of shit. Nothing about college football should be friendly when it comes to Urban Meyer. I can understand why Denard works with him, but Meyer is not someone who should be revered or emulated.

I also find is questionable that the NFL allows Urban to be a coach, despite that the fact that Urban has covered up domestic violence.

Thanks to Denard for great memories, and now for a great perspective.

Never knew his middle name is Xavier. Michigan does well with X/Zaviers.

Thanks for posting.

Glad to hear he's doing well. He gave us all a lot of those moments that being a football fan is about. Huddled together in the stands, or around a TV with some family or friends, and having that tightness in your chest released into a flurry of high-fives and yells.

If Denard Jr. has wheels like dad, maybe we'll see him in the Maize and Blue someday.

This piece encapsulates what is so great about football, especially college football.  But it also encapsulates what is so great about what can happen outside football.

It’s funny how quickly you can go from thinking football is the most important thing in your life to knowing, with absolute certainty, that it is not.

That's life.

...and all the Michigan fans in town always show me so much love.

It’s like having a second family … only with 110,000 aunts and uncles and cousins.

Denard is our nephew! Maize and blue to the very core.

The ND night game is one of my favorites of all time.

I loved that guy when he was at UM and still do!  The University should treat him like OSU treats Archie Griffin.  He embodies everything that is good about growing up at UM

We could’ve easily pulled that game off if Gardner was our backup QB and being trained as such instead of inexplicably moved to WR… Robinson was leaving after the 2012 season anyways so I don’t get why we didn’t keep Gardner at QB. Hoke’s caveman IQ

Fantastic article!

It brought back great memories not only as a Denard fan but I was at the 2012 Sugar Bowl and probably had one of the most fun weekends of my life there

That smile...  Infectious is the right word - when you see it, you have to smile yourself.

But of all the highlights from his career, the thing I'll remember most was the 2011 Gator Bowl.  Why that fucking game, you ask?  Because it embodies the one thing we can all remember from Denard Robinson - he played his heart out trying to win the game.  He was the only member of that entire team - players, coaches, support staff, hell, even the cheerleaders - who worked his ass off to win that game.

What a joy he was to watch...

Great read, and glad to hear Denard is doing well and doing what makes him happy! Easily one of the easiest guys to root for in program history. An all-time electric player for sure, but equally because of who he is off the field.

Will forever and always be a Denard Robinson fan, as a player and person. Wishing him the very best as he continues to pursue his endeavors. Go Blue!

Great player and even better person. Believe he’s probably a fantastic father which is the most important thing.

Much success to you Denard and thank you for everything I loved watching you.

That's a great read.  Glad Denard is living his best life.  Very happy for him.  He's a great ambassador for Michigan, but more importantly, for just being a good person.

Denard: "It’s funny how quickly you can go from thinking football is the most important thing in your life to knowing, with absolute certainty, that it is not."

It's funny because this was something that I learned from him. My best friend's younger brother played at M and after the loss to Michigan St in 2010, I was quite pissed.  We went into Schembechler after the game and Denard, Vincent Smith, Roundtree and a couple others were just hanging out. Their attitudes after the game were refreshing and it was one of the moments that definitely helped me ramp down my fandom to a healthy amount.  I realized I probably shouldn't be more upset at the loss than they were, since they were that ones that actualy played.

Love that guy. Not only was he fun to watch, not only did he have a great attitude, but he stayed through a coaching change when he easily could have gone elsewhere. Truly one of the all time greats for Michigan

Awesome article.  Love hearing from D Rob in his own words.  From time to time I've wondered how he was doing.  I am really glad he is doing well and is happy with his life.

That was great.  I had no idea how serious the Nebraska injury was.  I met Denard (and took my profile pic) at Wolverine Brewing when Devin was doing his live show there, analyzing the prior week's game.  Only chatted for a second but he couldn't have been more gracious.

Great essay.

Glad to know that he is doing well and that he isn't bitter about how things turned out. While FB was clearly very important, he still enjoyed his time in Ann Arbor.

Insightful about the nature of injuries. Unlike in the NFL where there is supposed to be an open reporting of injuries, it is easy to forget how much damage can be inflicted when being hit repeatedly by huge strong people running as fast as possible.

I didn’t think it was possible to like that young man more than I already did.  He proved me wrong once again.  I really need to stop underestimating him. What a special individual and incredible ambassador for the university

Great to see him doing well - who knows, maybe they could bring back another one of the greats to the program.  I would think his energy and passion for the school would be a huge selling point - not to mention showing a few highlights to a recruit couldn't hurt one bit.

I would have to say - it would be hard to pull a Fred Jackson on Denard - a recruit that was "Denard Robinson but fast" would truly be a mythical creature on the Bo Jackson / Deion Sanders level.

This is awesome. Denard being Denard in a Michigan uniform was fantastic enough, but to know what kind of man and human being he's become (or always was) makes it so much better.

I know that "Michigan Man" is thrown around far too frequently and carelessly by some Michigan fans, but in Denard's case it's 100% appropriate.

I would love to see him on Michigan's coaching staff some day.

Wow. That was a very powerful read. I don't recall ever in the past hearing that kind of detail about Denard's arm injury (HAD we ever heard that before? I may have missed it)

Ah, it's a little sad to think about what might have been for Denard, but it also brings a smile to my face (and I hope his, too!) to think about actually what WAS.

He was a truly special player. So fun to watch. And, quite easily for me, my favorite Michigan player I've ever had the fortune to see play in person.

Denard maybe the most beloved player in Michigan history.  I hope he becomes a part of the football team someday, but regardless he'll always be a part of the Michigan program.
