Down here in Detroit, our H.S. season opener usually had a snow delay. Senior year, our game was delayed an hour, so we drove to Rally's (now Checkers) for some extra fuel. We might've won state if we did that before every game.

A good ice storm is somewhat rare around here. Veterans of the area might remember one around 1994 or 1995 in March that really did a number on trees around Ann Arbor. We lost two very nice birches and a few pines in our property.
As for preparation, one thing we do say often is that it is far better to be completely ramped up and nothing terrible materializes than to be blindsided.

When that one hit Indiana we were without power for 13 days. I remember my dad plumbing a gas can to the fuel tank on the generator so it would run for 12 hours instead of 2 hours.

2017 Big Ten Tournament wind storm was crazy too. I was without power for 8 days. Had to stay at my parents after two days because no heat and the temp was like 12 the entire week.
That was a rough week. Michigan basketball kind of kept me from legit losing my mind.
