34 years, 9 months, and 24 days later, a Michigan man coached Michigan to a college football championship

I can only hope this is…

Could this still be true in December? (Edit: no.)

Unless mods can fix the link in the OP, here's the Detroit News link (requires subscription):

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/2024/03/08/mike-hart-will-not-return-to-michigan-as-running-backs-coach-next-season/72758458007/

From that article:

Mike Hart, Michigan’s running backs coach for the last three seasons, including the last two as run-game coordinator, will not be returning to the Wolverines’ staff this season under first-year head coach Sherrone Moore, two sources confirmed to The Detroit News.

Hart, whose contract with Michigan expired on Jan. 10, declined comment when reached by The Detroit News on Friday. He has not been connected to any recent openings on college football or NFL staffs.

25:44 mark talks about how the future org chart should go AD -> Football GM -> head coach, NIL expert (equivalent to NFL capologist), etc. In that model, the coach focuses on hiring coaches only, and the GM handles everything else.

After 1997, seeing as how…

After 1997, seeing as how Michigan hadn't won since the 1940s, I figured I'd be good for life. What brought me down were the losing streaks to Ohio. Carr didn't have it any more, I was willing to give RichRod a chance (even thought he deserved 1 more year), then Hoke gave momentary hope, but then Meyer kept winning, and then Day. And again, I thought Harbaugh deserved a chance after the Covid year.

Then Harbaugh pledged "we're gonna do it, or die trying", and the last three years happened, gloriously. I doubt the regular season games will ever have the same sting or joy to them (for me, at least) with the expanded playoffs. So I again think I'm good for life. Ask me again, however, if Ohio ever beats us 6 or more times in a row.

I have a Ross degree (consolation master's after I didn't finish my PhD). My time at Ross was deeply enriching and rewarding, and I've seen kids I taught there go on to do cool things. However, if someone's going to Ross, they should go in with eyes open:

https://www.michigandaily.com/statement/rethinking-ross-unglamorous-realities-business-school-education/

Whether it's Ross or LSA, your nephew should use year 1 to take classes to find out what he's good at and what he likes. There are many paths to high-income jobs, but you have to start with those aptitudes and desires. There's no universal recipe.

I mean, I'd feel silly if I triple posted. I'm not predicting how things will turn out, but I'll support the coaches and players who stay. "Difficult to see ... always in motion is the future."

Alabama lost, their coach retired, and they hired someone outside the Saban tree. Michigan won the national championship, and they have sufficient coaching to allow some continuity if Harbaugh leaves. They are not the same.

I appreciated the article for just telling us about how things look *right now*. “Do it now ‘cause tomorrow ain’t promised today.”

"Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Chris Fowler, Desmond Howard and Samantha Ponder, among others, were given the ill-gotten Emmys, ... There is no evidence that the on-air individuals were aware the Emmys given to them were improperly obtained."

My favorite line: "many at ESPN thought the rule preventing on-air personalities from getting statuettes for a win by the show was stupid. They may have just decided to do something about it, the rules be damned."

I haven't done a full review…

I haven't done a full review, but it's not about countable head -injuries- for young people, it's about repeated hits or "repetitive head impacts."

Neuropathologic and Clinical Findings in Young Contact Sport Athletes Exposed to Repetitive Head Impacts

CNN: It’s not concussions that cause CTE. It’s repeated hits, a study finds

Choosing to play football is an adult choice. College kids should get compensated for playing football, not just pros. High school is a gray area for choice because a person doesn't developmentally become an adult all at once, even though legally it's an on-switch at 18.

Charles Woodson is in the…

Charles Woodson is in the NFL Hall of Fame. We’ll have to see if any of these players achieve greatness in the NFL.

But as a team, this year’s is no question the best. I can’t think of a previous team that faced the gauntlet that this one did.

And people can suggest that all the naysaying brought the team together, but the mental toughness needed to endure that for months is astonishing.

From the paper: "It was…

From the paper: "It was shown that a team who starts on offense and scores a touchdown wins over 70% of the time."

"There may be times when a coach who wins the coin toss should consider eschewing conventional wisdom - for example, with a high-powered offense or with a nothing-to-lose attitude, the psychological impact of scoring first may outweigh the perfect information a team gets from playing offense second."

This paper was published in 2007, so there's at least 16 years additional data available to revisit this if there are any enterprising grad students with a stat class requirement. They could factor in red-zone effectiveness if that data is more readily available now.

The most instructive part to…

The most instructive part to me was the discussion of the final interception. McCord wasn't just chucking it at Harrison ... the play was designed to go there based on previous coverages. McCord reads Rod Moore and thinks Harrison is running to an open spot. The pressure makes McCord hurry, and Moore reads McCord in time to come back, and ends up with the pick.

Good schemes with moves and counter moves, but it came down to the good guys making great plays.

What might be new is a claim that an Illinois staff acknowledges the sign-stealing: "The staffer said that Bret Bielema and Illinois got signals 'legally' but I guess we’ll just have to take their word for it."

I thought I'd seen something…

I thought I'd seen something similar to this floated before. Unfortunately, the paper is gated, but someone else might be able to summarize it better:

An auction with positive externality and possible application to overtime rules in football, soccer, and chess (Granot and Gerchak 2014)

The version I thought I'd seen before was same as yours, except that there wasn't a score-or-die mechanism. Instead, first to score wins. The obvious limitation is that if you have two Iowas playing, the game could last to the heat death of the universe.

I like having a TD as sudden death -- it would encourage bids closer to the goal line, and a play that ends close to the goal line (but not a touchdown) doesn't immediately trigger a field goal to win. However, #collegekickers adds some chaos/drama to the calculation if a FG would win.

Immediately scrolled down to read the Sainristil interception play (+4!). My much younger self would be really happy to see that "roll a 20 on his stealth check" is a thing people say; looking forward to finding some time play Baldur's Gate 3.

During the game, I loved seeing Grant so happy after knocking down Wimsatt. Have fun, big man!

The distribution of student…

The distribution of student quality at a school matters a great deal. It dictates the level of material that can be successfully taught. There's no comparison between the difficulty of the material I encountered as an undergrad engineer at Michigan to what I think I can cover at an average private liberal arts college. Those kids would be discouraged in a hurry ... better for me to give them skills that will help them do programming locally rather than fail to prepare them for Oracle or Google.

Yes, the undergrad teaching quality at any large university is going to be shaky. Outside of the Ivies, star teachers who do a lot of undergrad work seem to be few and far between.

Just to underline this, the athletic department reported $215.1 million in operating revenue for fiscal year 2023. Meanwhile, net student tuition was $1.59 Billion-with-a-B, and overall university revenue was $9 Billion, according to the FY22 financial statements.

Athletics is a marketing program for the real business of the university.

With or without PTSD, sexual harassment and sexual assault are both underreported. The complaint could have come at any point before the statute of limitations and would still need to be investigated.

I get a ton of replay value out of seasons 3 and 4. I can both laugh and get some foreign language listening practice with "El Contador", "Lo Scandalo", "Coyote Lovely", and "The Papal Chase".

What the others are saying…

What the others are saying about zugzwang is correct. If, in this position, black has to move first, then black loses, as you describe.

But if white has to move first, then white can only draw. Ke7 isn't valid, Kd6 is a stalemate, and all other moves lose the pawn.

(I'm just echoing SirJack II, but I'm not sure if everyone is getting it.)
