Dan Dakich owns small-town mayor on Twitter (Illinois game)

Some of you don't like Dakich. I love him. Yeah, he goes overboard sometime, but 90% of the time he's right. This is one of those instances.
Some Illinois mayor started whining at him on Twitter, incorrectly citing the rules in regard to the technical dead ball foul called on State against Illinois. Dakich's responses were pretty funny.
My favorite:
@dandakich ...seriously, you tweet like a 13-year-old #commentarysimilartoo

@DonGerard ur seriously the mayor? U retweet fake accounts pick battles over things u know nothing about..whatever it takes I suppose

That's probably the perfect way to describe him. I think he's hilarious.

Funniest/Most entertaining color guy doing games right now...in any sport, imo.

the first half right.

Hey now, the dude may be a dbag but he's also a Michigan homer through and through (Thanks Andrew!). Gotta give him some slack. We need more media people on the bandwagon to combat Duke's bandwagon.

He hated us before then.

How/why did Dakich hate us before his son came here? Because he ranked Michigan 4th in his power rankings 2 years ago?
I can't believe the Internet butt-hurt that came out of Michigan being ranking 4th in a power rankings. The funniest thing is that Michigan ended up 5th in the conference.

He had that Indiana disdain for all things Michigan basketball that really came through in his broadcasts. When his son came to Michigan, there was a noticeable difference in his attitude about Michigan. I was quite shocked at the difference.

At the time of that particular Twitter drama, I would have agreed. However, I've changed course. You have to respect that Dakich was an early adopter of Twitter (relative to "mainstream media") and that he's leveraged it as part of his professional brand - which is to be a talking head. With that in mind, I don't care that he Twitter searched himself. To see if people were talking about him. I kinda think it's cool, now, that a semi-famous personality would respond to the masses on Twitter - how many people totally dodge criticism?
You may not like talking heads - I usually don't, unless they are funny and (generally) back up their stances. For the most part, he does.

I'm always taken aback by the vitriol and immaturity thrown around by public-ish figures on twitter. The internet is a very weird place that, if used often enough, seems to anesthetize people to the reality that EVERYONE CAN SEE WHAT YOU WRITE. Would Dakich and this mayor guys call each eachother elementary-school-bully names on national television?

I think he's great during the game.

Classic Dakich:
"Don't just drive it to the hoop and take a shot, pass the ball around. It's not that complicated. Basketball is an easy game."
Less than 20 minutes later:
"Don't pass the ball around, just drive it to the hoop and take a shot. It's not that complicated. Basketball is an easy game."
This was from an actual broadcast. I think it was Michigan vs. Purdue last year.

both could be true, depending on personnel in the game.
that said, he gets pretty damn emphatic about things that aren't 100%.
February 8th, 2015 at 11:12 AM ^
Agreed, but he did not say these things in context. He just cherry-picked a play that didn't work and then hit us up with his "contrarian wisdom". If dribble drive didn't work, then we should have passed the ball. If passing the ball didn't work, then we should have dribble-drive'd.
He's an entertainer, not an analyst. I do find him entertaining, but when I'm looking for analysis, I listen to the other guy on his broadcasts.

Dakich has become Vitale 2.0. He says so many conflicting things during a game and then cherry-picks them to suggest "I told you so" later, yada yada. And how often do we have to hear how great he thinks Dawson is and that State needs to drop it to him every time down court. Hasn't Dan seen how poorly Dawson converts and how horrible he is passing out of a double-team
And Andrew was right when he tweeted Dan that it wasn't a foul on Illinois.
Let's also not forget his uninformed douchy interview with Brian and steadfast love for Brandon.

But he made lots of plays.
I like him and Tirico together. They make some good points and seem like two buddies having fun watching a game over a beer.

Whatever you believe about Dan Dakich, all you can really do now is what I did and welcome this dude to the ranks of those blocked by Dan Dakich. The reasons don't matter too much at this point, but many of us have apparently transgressed over the years and been ultimately blocked. We're not an elite group, just a persisent one.
February 7th, 2015 at 9:05 PM ^
I enjoy his in-game analysis, he's usually very neutral and correct, also not afraid to call people out. But today I think he was wrong about that being called a tech. If they didn't call a foul on the floor, you can't call that a tech or flagrant on review. What if he had missed and he didn't box him out and Trice got the rebound? When you put up a FT during a 1-and-1, you have to watch for people boxing you out.
February 7th, 2015 at 9:18 PM ^
But, not b/c of his schtick. Indeed, I worry that he'll go all Vitale and only be about the schtick. I like him as a commentator first b/c he educates me about the game. He can describe things that I don't realize as I never played the game. Second, I do like how he'll be a bit more direct, like today when he said, "Tough shot? That's a polite way of saying it was a terrible shot." (sort of paraphrasing).
Tweeting. Meh. I've never thought to myself, "Gee, I wonder what's on twitter."
February 7th, 2015 at 9:33 PM ^
The thing about Dakich is he continously monitors Twitter real-time updates for anywone who so much as tweets his name.
February 7th, 2015 at 9:38 PM ^
It almost every Twitter spat I've seen, nobody gets "owned" or comes out looking like anything other than an immature jerk, and this one is no different.

The dead ball rule. Also, the guy is a publicly elected official. As soon as he became part of a Twitter quarrel, he lost.

Dan Dakich as an in-game basketball analyst? Good.
Dan Dakich as a sports talk radio host? Bad. Very, very bad.

It was pretty much a normal box out that Trice embellished. The amazing part was watching MSU still find a way to blow a game the refs tried to gift wrap them at home.

So tough, those Izzo teams. Real blue collar, down and dirty, Ford truck types.
