well that's just, like, your opinion, man
Is Dan Dakich awful or is it just me?
I like him. He said nice things about us, too. He's outspoken and called out the Knicks in a way I loved.
And for bonus fun, he stirred up little bro' tonight. When he talked about some teams complaining about injuries, Izzo fits the bill. Big time.
There's a thread at RCMB where they're all upset.
Loved the trashing of the Knicks. Especially as it came right after commercial for a Knicks game. I would imagine some execs at ESPN were cringing during that.
In his defense, I recall him once praising Max Bielfeldt for having the biggest calves in the Big 10, so at least he recognizes certain accomplishments.
Yeah, that was earlier this year. A little strange.
He's awful and he knows it. He's a huge troll.
I thought I posted your post and had no recolection of it.. took me a second. Have you had this avatar a while? I just created this new account not long ago, I had a different avatar on my other account.. but I use this avatar all over the internet. Either way, just curious more than anything.. it's a great avatar. South Park and Stauskas, two of my favorite things.
You guys have the same number of points! Stop fucking with my mind
It's a case of Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Jekyll. They are one and the same.
I can't even remember where I got it. It's been by basketball season twitter avatar for the last few seasons.
He might be trying to hard to not be biased because his kid plays for Michigan
This certainly explains a lot...makes it a bit more forgivable
He used to really troll us hard before this. Now he's just merely unbearable.
Sometimes it seems like he tries to do a Dickie V. impression (at least pitch and "enthusiasm"-wise), which is when I find him annoying. He definitely didn't seem to have many nice things to say about Michigan before his kid walked on, but he seems decently balanced to me now.
Griese did that when he announced UM games while Brian was QB. I remember a game, might have been the OSU game or the Rose Bowl, and he was the announcer and you could hear him straining not to cheer on his son so hard. Obviously not the same, but in this instance it does feel like Dakich tends to underplay UM basketball a bit.
That said, he can be downright insufferable, though I'll take million of hims over a minute of Vitale.
Remember it well - he struggled with it for a while. He insisted on calling him "Griese" all season until the final game or two, when he loosened up and called him Brian.
when Brian was named MVP and his dad was in tears.
Can't think of a better broadcasted father son moment.
I loved his call of the game. The fact that it was our greatest road win ever had some play, but I love any guy who actually calls people out, especially refs, and the Knicks. Dude's real. Jabrill Peppers probably loves Dakich. Word's awful, not aweful.
I, too, loved him calling out the Knicks. I'm sure the folks at ESPN didn't like it as much since they kept advertising the Knicks vs Nets game on Monday. Then Dakich goes on to say he doesn't know how anyone can willingly watch the Knicks.
Yeah, what a new, topical spin on the Knicks' season. Hilarious! Did he make any ESPN loves Tebow cracks, too?
I thought that rant about the Knicks was hilarious. He didn't just mention it.. it was a legit 30 second bashing of New York. Found it pretty funny.
"If you pay money to watch the Knicks after that performance... you must have a lot of money."
he gave his Indiana buddy, Woodson, a total pass.
Yep, people in here are too damned sensitive sometimes.
In all seriousness, I don't see how ANYONE enjoys listening to him.
I think because his son plays for Michigan and now he's more pro-Michigan that Michigan fans all of a sudden like him. THAT is actually more annoying that Dakich himself.
99.9% of Michigan fans couldn't STAND Dakich the past 2 years...now his son plays for Michigan and he knows the team better, loves Beilein and Stauskas and all of a sudden people like him.
He's still a terrible announcer, he's just now a terrible announcer that likes Michigan.
People REALLY need to stop comparing broadcasters to Dick Vitale.
Could you imagine Dick Vitale, actually calling a game like a normal person? It would be weird and be even more awful.
He's his own entity at this point. Just accept it, he's not going to get better, he can't...he gets paid to be him. It may be a clown, but that's what it is. Just like Chris Berman isn't going to stop being Chris Berman, that's his brand. That's why they still have a job, it's not because they're actually GOOD. It's their brand.
Keith Jackson was borderline senile that last 5 years he was in the booth. It was painful to listen to him because he messed up everything. But he was the brand and the voice of the Rose Bowl. If he could get off one "WHOOOOOOOAAAA NELLLLLLLIIIIIE!!!!" then it was worth it.
Musberger is now in this group. Corso is this for College Gameday.
Some of these guys shouldn't be compared to the standard in their profession is what I'm saying. So it does nothing comparing Dakich to Vitale. That's a horrible comparison. Compare Dakich to his industry standard. When you do, you'll see his sucks.
I thought he made some funny wisecracks and provided quality color commentary (fwiw) some people you just can't please I guess
I just remember hearing him say something along the lines of, "Big Ten guys like to touch each other."
"Occasionally guys touch each other. Thats just a basketball play."
That means full of awe, right?
I believe the true definition of 'awful' is to be full of awe at something.
Bother me, but I'm not easily bothered. He's no Pam ward
I actually enjoy his broadcasts.
I'll second that. I think he's great. Obviously, he's got a lot of bball knowledge and he's good at sharing it during the game. I don't see what the problem is with him. I'd take him over Dickie V any day. Dickie V spends most of the game kissing butt instead of actually breaking down plays and adding true color commentary.
HaHa, yeah he is tearable. He is quite maranic and says some stoopid stuff.
I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I think Dakich is actually one of the better color guys on ESPN.
Much worse. Seems like its been a night and day difference which may be because his son is on the team now. Either that or I just didn't notice tonight being so ecstatic with how good of a game we played.
Glad his son plays for Michigan but it will forever make being annoyed with Dan an awkward situation. We all know by now that various recruits and players read this blog. I know it's a favorite pasttime to talk about our distaste for Mr. Dakich but I cringe at the thought of Andrew coming onto this blog and seeing it.
I think my permanent stance on Dan Dakich will have to be "I find other announcers to be more enjoyable than him. Next question."
You in awe of him?
Did you watch any games before his son committed to UM? He was just as bad, if not worse, back then.
He doesn't bother me much. He says some stupid things at times but all announcers do. As others have mentioned i like him calling out the refs when they screw up. I also liked him calling out the knicks tonight.
He's not the greatest, but there are far worse out there. Bottom line is, so long as Michigan plays like they did today and comes away with a W, then Miley Cyrus could call the game and I wouldn't care... Come to think of it, that might be entertaining as hell... Can we make this happen?
I don't mind Dakich. At least he seems to be honest. Some guys gush over every little thing or say the same thing over and over. He comes off as a little too opinionated sometimes, but I like when he's calling the game. Wasn't he the one who tweeted about how "UM and OSU were both looking for coaches at the same time for the first time in forever, one because they didn't get Terrelle Pryor and the other because they did" or something like that?
He's fine in my opinion.
I like him as a color commentator -- I'd suffice to say he is in the top 10%. He actually gives out some decent analysis due to his coaching career, just like Bruce Pearl. He is a little loud and uses some hyperboles (Aaron Craft), but he isn't nearly as bad as Dick Vitale. His willingness to get excited about great basketball plays AND speak out about bad plays/refs/behavior makes me take his opinion more seriously than fluffer commentators.
I don't like him on twitter, however.
neither does anthony wright
It's always a chicken and egg thing with national personalities acting up on twitter, but he was trolling Anthony Wright (and Michigan generally) on twitter very hard for a while. Announcing, to me at least, seemed to be a decent story.
He's kind of annoying.
Dakich isn't as bad as the refs in the UConn Louisville game. Jeez this is incredibly bad reffing.
The Ollie toss-out was pretty bad - they could have done a little less there and been fine. The no-call was pretty awful also. That sequence completely changed this game.
the team he can't cheerlead on air in wins so I imagine he feels the need to downplay the win.
His "analysis" is awful. Multiple times, a Michigan player missed an open shot and he blamed it on not swinging the ball enough. At other times, he had a feeling a certain team was going to make a run.
It's ridiculous what passes for analysis in sports broadcasts these days.
IIRC, the comment about not swinging the ball enouch occurred while we let the game get too close to comfort...in the midst of the 3-4 trips in which levert didn't pass the ball and instead tried to create his own shot upon touching the ball.
just pointing this out from what i remember
I'm sure Beilein would agree and took Levert out shortly thereafter for that exact reason. Too much 1 on 1, or in his case 1 on 2, particularly against a Wisky team that does not defend with great energy or speed (another DD point well illustrated).
Levert plays hard and I have no problem with him on the team, but he drives me nuts. When Coach B had Stauskas out of the game and Levert in, his decision making led to three straight God awful possessions which was when Wisky got back in it. He makes plays but until he improves his passing and his ability to be more decisive without over dribbling, he won't be a complete player.
I see several mentions of Dakich calling out the Knicks, but how is he not getting credit for calling out Izzo for whining about injuries??? It was glorious, thanks Dakich!
That was awesome. It was definitely a shot at Izzo and it was well deserved.
and very true.
I try to explain to some of my Spartan friends my feelings about Izzo but they never want to even listen for a second. I give him all the praise in the world for his coaching.. but the cry baby routine and begging the refs, being SO over the top, etc.. they'll ignore it to their deaths. Fortunately there's a ton of pictures/gifs/video on the internet I can keep sending them.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who grinned at his mention of coaches who do nothing but bemoan their glut of injuries. Izzo practically starts every interview with a rundown of guys on their deathbed in East Lansing. No one cares about your woes, Tom.
You never hear JB utter a damn word about how this team needs Mitch here, lacks Mitch there, struggles because of Mitch's absence everywhere. Fuck that shit. He makes no excuses.
I love John Beilein.
They've gotta do all their shit on the fly, with a million people listening. Now that's pressure.
He could be one of the best color guys if he didn't repeat himself so many damn times.
Dan Dakich @dandakich 11m
Not 1 Michigan coach-player or staff member even brings up McGary being out.. Other schools?? If a guy has the sniffles they 're "banged up"
Dan Dakich @dandakich 9m
Btw..Sobolewski was out for Northwestern..never heard a word from NW..Wisky kids had bad flu..Bo was mad that someone mentioned it
I like when he and Tirico are teamed up. It's fun and educational. You guys who don't like him sound like OSU fans who bitch about Herby....Many IU fans HATE him because he doesn't suck up to Crean's team ... I grew up watching Dickie V coach at Callahan Hall and then revitaleizing the Pistons. Loved the man, but I am growing old of his rambling with the same old overhyping schtick. Maybe Dan D will wear on me eventually but Iike his style now... he is an entertaining twitter follow too btw.
He sounded like an obnoxious, drunk, and arrogant douche on cocaine tonight... He really does sound very unintelligent with the way he repeats himself so often... I honestly don't know what ESPN sees in him.
wow, a lot going on there
Seriously dude? You do remember his son plays for OUR team right?
Sounds like a busy guy.
loved his call of the Staukas three though - he was in awe of that play.
Surprised no one has mentioned what he said in the post game, that Wisconsin was still the best team in the Big 10 despite the loss, that Iowa was #2, followed by MSU and then OSU.
He didn't even mention us, so I guess I'll assume we were #5. That's what a 5-0 start and a road win over the #1 team gets you, apparently.
I think he may be sandbagging it a little because his kid's on the team - pretty sure Dan was pleased with tonight's result.
It was the studio guy.
oh, good catch... my bad
I was so blinded with rage I got confused!
He was annoying at times but I forgave him after he became the first media member ever to (indirectly) call out Izzo for his constant woe-is-me crap. I loved the comparison he made between Beilein and "other coaches" (read: Izzo) regarding injury excuses.
Compared to the Woe-is-Me Jedi Master, Lou Holtz. When he coached ND, every fall practice would begin with a recitation of how his entire team (typically made up mostly of HS All-Americans) would be lucky to beat a team of blind nuns. Everyone was always sick, injured, suffering gout, etc.
That was a little different thought. Holtz would talk up his next opponent and pooh-pooh his team as a motivational tactic. Izzo bitches after the fact that his guys are injured and/or went to the NBA, with no apparent purpose other than to make excuses.
I think he has gotten better over the years. In the past I couldn't stand him because he would dog specific players, coaches and schools for stuff that had nothing to do with what was happening on the court, He knows his stuff, and it seems like now the majority of his commentary is focused on what is actually happening in the game. Consistently calling Wiscy out for not hedging properly (who and how) on the screen is an example of the insight he brings during the game vs someone simply saying the guy hit an open shot or the d isn't rotating properly. Okay, he still took his shots at the Knicks, but I'm okay with that.
I didn't think he was bad at all. Just thank the stars it wasn't Vitale.
He doesn't bother me. I don't agree with everything he says but he is no more annoying than others. He does have some odd opinions at times though.
Yup. Way too much Dakich hating on here. Dude seems to tell it straight, wants less bullshit fouls, delay of games, likes old school basketball. All positives
I don't mind Dakich. What you see is what you get.
Did everyone see that Robert Chew (Proposition Joe from The Wire) died yesterday?
To me, he doesn't seem as bad as he was last year. Maybe because his son is a Wolverine.
can't stand the dude. The old curmudgeon thing is amusing for about 10 minutes then he just seems like a dick.
Tells it how it is and is way better then Dickie V
Give us something different
He talks way too much and has a superlative for EVERY player he talks about: i.e "Nik Stauskas is the hardest working player I have ever seen... Nobody loves playing basketball more than Glenn Robinson... No coach prepares more than John Belien." I find him EXTREMELY annoying.
And the stuff about Spike's dad. He has to mention that
about everything he says, its just the way he says everything.
Michigan homer for some reason.
Uhhh, maybe because his son is on the team?
If I have to hear him complain one more time about teams not swinging the ball from one side to the other before shooting, I am going to punch something. He even did that on one possession where we did swing the ball and even threw it inside to the low post before LeVert missed a jumper.
Was very glad to see Stauskas load the team up on his back. When we were only up 1, I was thinking about how much we needed Trey Burke at that moment to take over. But Stauskas has a higher shooting percentage when the game is on the line.
Hes kinda right about that. Swung the ball left to right to get the D out of position.
Dakich was right about that. And as a former coach, it probably drove him nuts to see us not moving the ball around.
What i find even more annoying is whenever spike hits a 3 the announcers immediately reference the national title game. This happens every game!! Yeah his first half performance was amazing but isn't referencing it every game overkill?
Spikes dad was a baller in Gary? #DakichGoToReferences
I don't love Dakich all the time but for the most part like his willingness to be very opinionated. He's the anti Dickie V to me, willing to piss off fans if he thinks someone needs to be called out. Doesnt mean he's always right but so few guys do it, it's refreshing to me. He's made some questionable moves on Twitter however as others have pointed out.
Even though it's over-used, I find the Spike's dad Biddy basketball reference amusing because it's 9 & 10-year-old-level ball.
Yeah his first half performance was amazing but isn't referencing it every game overkill?
The announcers don't do that for our benefit. They do it for the benefit of the neutral observers who may not have watched Michigan play this year. Same reason why we hear every game how John Beilein has never been an assistant, and why the 1989 team is referenced at every home game.
References to Spike in the first half of the L'ville game has replaced "he's not just a shooter"
I think he is a good analyst. However he sometimes gets a bit too casual. If that makes any sense.
If u have ever listened to him do an IU game he does really love some of the bars as much as he says he does. I have seen him out on a number of occasions.
Everyone settle down. Dakich is actually pretty pro-Michigan. He acts the same way when he does IU games. He is extremely positive about Michigan most of the time and just because he says one negative thing it doesn't mean he hates Michigan. He's paid to be impartial. He isn't afraid to speak his mind and we should like that with announcers. I have talked to him multiple times in Bloomington, since I am a student there, and he is a pretty funny guy. He's not boring and we should all appreciate that.
...knows the game, explains it well. Anyone who thinks he's anti-Michigan just doesn't understand broadcasting
I will admit that I bristled about his Index being based on not a lot of hard data and being prone to recency effects, but from a quality standpoint, as others have mentioned, from a knowledge / quality standpoint, Dakich is probably in the top tier of commentators out there and not nearly as difficult to take as Vitale or some others. I do appreciate that he is willing to be forthright about things he finds good as well as not so good sometimes too.
While he may overuse the superlatives, at least he's on the side of the athletes for the most part. He is frequently appreciative of the good things the teams and players do. Of course he points out the negatives (not swinging the ball), but he's a far cry from Knight, in whose eyes no player has ever done anything as well as he should. Ever.
is definitely you
This comment has about the same value as the one about Dakich. It's just a matter of personal taste.
I feel like a more knowledged fan because of his insight of the game of basketball. He keeps it real and even keeled. I would go as far to say that he should be the mold of color analysts for all sports. I usually tune out broadcasters while Dakich grabs my attention because of the significant value add of his commentary. Most of the time he is spot on and is man enough to admit when he is wrong. He is #1 for college basketball in my book.
vague. please explain...
Yeah, I didn't get that impression at all.
what they want to hear? Dakich was lavish in his praise of Beilein tonight!
Dakich is a decent analyst, but ridiculously self-indulgent.
If you like him now, wait until you play OSU. If he does that game, his man-crush for Aaron Craft will make you throw up in your mouth.
BTW, good win last night, guys. Very impressed with your team--especially sans McGary. If Stauskas is hot, I don't look forward to our (MSU) match with you.
He is the most annoying commentator i have ever had to listen to. I don't even think he watches the games he is at, spends more time talking about things other than the game at hand. And ESPN TV directors have no Idea of how to manage TV coverage. Spend time showing a player sitting on the sidelines or a coach walking up and down the sideline while the game in inplay. Showing billboard about game matchup's in none related conference to the game being played, so lone that the game in inplay when they cut back to it. Come on we are here to watch the game not a player sitting on the side or some fan in the stands. Show the game, we already have to side thru more commercials than playing time becuase of your money hungry politics.
