Curt Mallory to Wyoming as DB coach?
Curt Mallory is rumored to be heading to Wyoming as their new DB coach and Pass Game Coordinator. Yes, I know how much we all love footballscoop, but it was the first I've seen on Mallory and thought it was thread worthy. Please delete if already posted.

Unless Harbaugh didn't want him here, this is less than a lateral move IMO.

Was this the other good news footballscopp promised Michigan fans? Just kidding. Im glad he was able to land another job, if true.

Coaching america is even more insane. The difference between being a low level FBS assistant and a high level FBS head coach is insane (50M vs. 5MM). Saban makes almost twice as much in a week as Nick Danielson does in a year

Even if another coach is making a small % of what he is. People always worry about what others earn but don't look how much they produces. Saban is worth more money to Alabama than he is paid in revenue dollars over replacement. Wyoming coach is likely to costs more than he produces. So who is the deal?

Whatever do you mean by normal?
U-Wyoming is in Laramie which is right by the Colorado front range cities, Denver, Boulder, and the like and just down the road from Cheyenne, Salt Lake is also within driving distance.
You're surrounded by Mountains, there's great skiing nearby, and there's tons of outdoor stuff to do. Tough for a football coach to take advantage of, but still it's there. There're a lot of worse places to go live and coach in IMHO.

I would rather live in Wyoming than anywhere east of the Mississippi including Michigan, and that was where I was born and raised.

You're aware that's what most people in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, etc. say constantly about the MidWest and the Rust Belt hellholes we have around here(I'm from the middle of nowhere Nevada and now live in AA and travel everywhere for work, so solid perspective on both sides). Everywhere in the country has it's good and bad parts and you just have to adjust to them. Acting like a certain part of the country is bad is pretty much inherently dumb.
Edit: except for Oklahoma, screw that state.

Columbus Ohio.
They have stuff, but you are still in the middle of Ohio.

Some teams have one DC call the front and another call the coverage. OSU did it in 2012-2013. I think it's stupid, as I think the coverage in many ways dictates the front, and vice versa (I'm sure they have rules that certain things can't be paired), but some coaches apparently believe in it.

Brady's guys aren't exactly getting snatched up by big programs.
I think Brady's biggest failure was not bringing in a staff that suited the largesse of the program he was taking over. He got it right with Mattison. But you don't bring Dan Ferrigno, Darrell Funk, and Mark Smith to Michigan. I mean no personal disrespect to those guys, but they're not Michigan-caliber coaches.

If Hoke had brought in top tier assistants and let them do their jobs things might have gone quite a bit differently. Assuming that Brandon wasn't actually calling the plays.

Magnum - exactly. Especially if you are a supposed "CEO coach" who has to delegate as much as Hoke supposedly had to. If you do that your underlings should be stars.
I've always been surprised how little heat Mallory received here. Compared to Funk, Jackson, Ferringo - maybe people just focus more on offensive positions and then for defense just blame the DC. But Manning at least developed Lewis last year. Mallory had the whole DB corps in 2013 and they were the worst unit by a large margin. Then he was downgraded just to S and they were the worst unit again.
And you can see with these coaching searches how much position coach jobs are word of mouth and previous relationships. It speaks badly that former UM position coaches are not landing better jobs. Or speaks realistically.
Montgomery may have been our best position coach and we let him go to Oklahoma for a better position. Unless you are a Harbaugh type or Meyer type who has an eye for a ready replacement you can't do that.

I feel that Hoke wasn't particularly demanding of his assistants. The only move he made here was to demote Mallory. At least it seemed like a demotion rather than a reshuffling, since Manning was given CBs and NBs. It seems like replacing him altogether would have been the smarter move, but not in Hoke's comfort zone.
Borges' firing had the feel of being Brandon's work.

Well the new strength coach is not Turley so I'm sure that'll get brought up now and again when someone goes down with a leg injury.
January 7th, 2015 at 10:29 AM ^
Well hopefully he finds some success out there. Craig Bohl is a great coach. He built a Bama-esque dynasty at NDSU, and I'm sure we'll be hearing that guy's name come up quite a bit for top jobs in the next few years.
Not a bad guy for Mallory to learn from.

A few years ago I saw him flying first class into Billings, which is the closest airport to much of a large part of Wyoming. I doubt if he was recruiting since neither state hardly ever produces Division 1 talent. Family? Or (like me) just prefers the Wyoming area over living in Michigan (?).
January 7th, 2015 at 10:48 AM ^
Most the folks I knew when living in Wyoming just went to DIA. Then again I lived in Laramie. I'd imagine the people of Gillete, Sheridan and Cody probably go north to Billings. And while Northern and Western Wyoming are beautiful, the Laramie area is pretty desolete. It's a high dessert, and the weather is brutal. Constant strong winds, snow can happen at any time, and winters are very harsh. The cost of living is also absurdly high for what it is. But maybe he enjoys it better. Best of luck to him there. War Memorial Stadium can get rocking when it's full.
As a side note about Coach Bohl, from the few games I caught of Wyoming this year, he seemed to be running a slow tempo offense. In Laramie this makes absolutely no sense. The city sits at 7200 ft, so running tempo against an opponent that isn't acclimated to the altitude seems obvious. I didn't watch much so I may be wrong about his offense being slow, but from what I saw it didn't seem like a wise coaching decision.
January 7th, 2015 at 12:26 PM ^
Problem is most of the Mountain West teams play at altitude as well, so it's not as big of an advantage as it might be otherwise. Besides coaches are who they are, hard to completely change philosophies as far down the line as Bohl is.

Curt Mallory is only 45 yrs old and has good family/professional connections. He still has plenty of time to rise in the coaching profession.
As for Hoke's other out-of-work assistants, the AFCA National Convention is next week so there may be more news then.

I was in Laramie over the weekend and saw this at least something will be familiar.
“Those Who Stay Will Be Champions” reads a placard in the locker room. Bohl sees it as a motto for the fans as well. “It’s been heartwarming for me to meet fans who have had tickets since the 1970s who have come to War Memorial Stadium and are starving for us to be successful. To our fans, it means ‘hang in there with us.’ If you stay, we will be champions.”
It is on the door to their indoor facility too.
