Congratulations to the Class of 2020

Submitted by bwlag on

Notifications went out today to early admission freshman applicants. Congratulations to the new Wolverines and future Leaders and Best that will arrive on campus in the fall.

I am thrilled to say that my son will be among them as a freshman in the College of Engineering and (hopefully) a tuba player in the MMB.

Go Blue!

you'll likely work hard as a freshman, harder as a sophomore, hardest as a junior, and then ride it out to graduation. Probably my proudest moment in life was when I got to stand in Michigan Stadium when they asked the College of Engineering graduates to stand.

Go mechanical if you're so inclined.

My daughter received her acceptance to Michigan today. She is still considering other schools (Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, John Hopkins) but I am proud of her wherever she decides to go to school.

Can't go wrong any which way, but let me throw my thoughts out based off my experiences of being from A2 but living in Nashville: Michigan, you get the best of both worlds (great academics, great sports environment). Vanderbilt: great school in a GREAT city that is growing unlike any other. But if she wants to be fanatical about sports -- VU is not the way to go. Their environment for football is severely lacking. Basketball has its moments like Michigan. Vandy baseball games are fun, but not better than Hockey at Yost.

Best of luck to her! Congrats!

If you've got the benefit of in-state tuition, Michigan might be the best value. But those are all very good schools to be choosing from.

One thing to maybe think about is the opportunity to do research as an undergrad, in which case UofM probably has the largest variety in terms of academic fields.

We do have the benefit of in-state tuition so for me I definitely know where I would like her to go to school (i attended UM as well).  But both of her parents are in a position to allow her to go wherever she chooses.  She did attend cheer camp at Michigan a couple times and really enjoyed herself so I hope when it comes down to it she chooses wisely (i.e. Michigan).

One thing I will say is that as an OOS student in 2009 with no particular ties to the school, Michigan was fairly "meh" to me. Flash to six years and one graduate degree from an Ivy later, and going to Michigan ended up being one of the best experiences of my life in many ways, and most of those had nothing to do with sports (and it was equal/better to the Ivy).

(not so young anymore) was accepted as well. I am very proud of my son, the man he is and the man he will be.  Congratulations to all the future Wolverines.  Go Blue Go.

That's awesome! Has Michigan changed the admission process though? I could have sworn that when I applied (started as a freshman in 2007) they did rolling admissions rather than having a set early admission date

This means that the kids that were sophomore newcommers when I was a senior (my HS went 10-12 grade) are seniors.............

That's unbelievable to me. HS flew by for me personally, but college has gone even quicker.

I hope your son has made the most of his senior year of HS! You really get out of it what you put in.

That would be the one piece of advice I'd give anyone still in HS or approaching their senior year. Do all kinds of stuff. Go to the football games, road trip to the road ones.

Congratulations!  I took my high school senior son to the Game a few weeks ago and he was so thrilled to be back in Ann Arbor.  Alas, with out of state tuition it is not in the cards for him to follow his Dad to UM.  Instead, he becomes a Clemson Tiger next year.  I told him that around January of our freshman year we were all wondering why we didn't go to a warm Southern school with all its, uh, amenities.  He will get that experience.  But he will be blue in his heart even as he screams his head off in Death Valley.

9 years ago this week that I got in(!)  I never really thought I'd go there at that point; then I visited and fell in love.  Best decision I ever made, of course.

Congratulations to eveyone today and I have to say I'm a little jealous.

God, I feel old now.

I received my acceptance into the engineering school 40 years ago. That's a bit of a scary number. Last month, I interviewed students that had applied to the school of engineering as part of the HAIL program. It was a great experience talking to these young students about Michigan engineering and life as a student. I hope they got good news this past week, too.

I was very impressed by all of the kids I interviewed. They all had a long list of AP math and science courses. The high schools offer pre-engineering classes that sound like something I would have loved when I was that age. Their ACT and SAT scores put mine to shame. The time commitment wasn't that great. The biggest problem was getting the kids scheduled. All of them are booked solid every day just like my kids were in high school. Also, per today's norm, I sent them email and only 2 read it promptly and responded. Had to text the other 3 kids to get their attention. No one pays attention to email anymore. It was fun and I'll get another batch to interview in Jan.

Man, its absolutely crazy to think that it has already been 6 years since I got that email. Seems like it was just yesterday. Michigan was the only school I had ever really wanted to go to, and it was the first one I heard back from so it made waiting for the rest of the letters so much more stress-free.

Congrats to all and Go Blue!
