Coming soon: Tumbling & Acrobatics as an NCAA sport
Women's wrestling and "acrobatics & tumbling" are being added as NCAA Emerging Sports for Women.
That's basically a window of time possible sports have to be added by NCAA member schools for it to gain NCAA official status. For a sport to be eligible for NCAA Emerging status-
- The sport meets the NCAA definition of a sport
- At least 20 varsity or competitive club teams exist at NCAA member schools
- At least 10 NCAA member schools sponsor or intend to sponsor the sport
Division 1 schools like Baylor, Oregon, Quinnipiac already have Varsity acrobatics & tumbling programs. Locally D3 Adrian College also has a team.
Honestly had no idea what acrobatics & tumbling was. Found highlights from a competition-

Needed a good laugh to start off my day.

Just make sure if you're going to the multiple Michigan events in the same day, you leave yourself an opportunity to swap to the t-shirt of the appropriate team at the appropriate venue.

So cheerleading??
February 25th, 2020 at 11:57 AM ^
Yeah, but acrobatics and tumbling sounds more like a sport!

So Cheerleading essentially. Why do they need another sport other than that?
February 25th, 2020 at 6:45 AM ^
Cheerleading is not always Title IX sport but this would likely be which comes with lots of other considerations, such as liability for injuries and scholarships.
February 25th, 2020 at 5:59 AM ^
Great. Football ticket prices are going up again to fund this "sport".
February 25th, 2020 at 11:07 AM ^
Yes. Another way for the NCAA to not pay players.

I just can't get into sports that require judges to determine who wins/loses.
February 25th, 2020 at 6:34 AM ^
Then you're going to hate the call made on J.T. Barrett.

When it comes to combat sports, although the judges can certainly screw things up at the end, they usually don't. And the refs are not constantly interrupting the flow of the match, & calling random fouls for stuff that happens on almost every play like football & basketball.

So this is like the dance team in high school? I dunno man, this seems like a stretch...
February 25th, 2020 at 6:47 AM ^
Our dance team didn’t have tumbling. Our cheerleading team had a separate competitive cheer season in the winter that did. I support competitive cheer. But why the difference? It doesn’t make sense.

LEEEEET’S GET READY TO TUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMBLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE!!!!!!
February 25th, 2020 at 7:47 AM ^
Honestly, seems like a low overhead cost sport for teams to have and I’m sure the intent is all about balancing out the Title IX funding, which I’m not going to discuss further. ??♂️

Seems like a strange time for schools to be adding sports when most of them have money problems as it is.
February 25th, 2020 at 8:10 AM ^
Oof. That looks incredibly boring.
February 25th, 2020 at 9:31 AM ^
Looks cool. The pause after some of the moves is weird, but whatever.

Anytime we can expand the pool of athletes who can train and compete at something they enjoy and are good at, it's a good thing. If they can get scholarships and other athlete perks, the better. I would rather universities plow TV money into more sports opportunities rather than escalating coach and administrator salaries for no good reason.
February 25th, 2020 at 11:47 AM ^
True, I was just logging in to say the same thing. This is far far down my list of sports but I think its good the NCAA is trying to encourage participation in other sports besides just cashing in on bowl games and the NCAA tournament.
On a somewhat related topic: I wonder if the windfall that all the big conferences are experiencing from the TV deals will lead to any athletic programs adding new sports. I think in the Big Ten every school is getting like an extra $40 million/year now (which is insane). I would love to see these schools use that money to pay basketball and football players of course. But also, I'd like to see them expand their athletic departments- or at the very least save some programs - particularly wrestling, hockey and baseball teams- that might be on the chopping block. And I'd like to see them add some spectator-friendly sports like volleyball, soccer and lacrosse (I'm the resident lacrosse nerd and I'm always excited to see new programs pop up around the country). If you haven't watched any volleyball games on BTN, you're missing out - it's a GREAT product.
But, knowing this is NCAA/college sports they'll probably waste that $ on administrator bonuses, bloated coaches' salaries and lockerroom waterfalls.

You wouldn't rather see them lower ticket prices?
February 25th, 2020 at 11:30 AM ^
This is another thing where the only people who care are the parents of the people involved. And even then, they probably don't care that much.

Can we call it Tumbling & Acrobatics - or T&A for short???
/I will show myself out now
Cool. It is very interesting to watch such things when you visiting games such as basketball or american football. These girls are very cool! By the way do you make bets on matches? Is it only for fun or maybe you earn money on this?
