College GameDay Open Thread

They're in Mississippi and everyone is wearing bow ties and there are champagne fountains at the tailgate. The South is weird.

In any case, Herby picked Michigan to win. Katy Perry is the guest picker later. So that's an upgrade

Somehow this seems fitting. This was the one game I had plans for attending a Michigan football game. While my heart is with Michigan football my reasoning and alliance go hand-in-hand with Brian's and Ace's. This will be my "no-show game." Congratulations to Dave Brandon and how you have been able to push away the Michigan fan base. Your arrogance has superseded your intelligence.

Not me.  Gonna watch the SEC game at noon, or the Manchester City match.  Urban Meyer already has Barrett throwing for 350 yards and actually looking like a true dual threat.. Unreal what elite coaching can do... I wonder what that's like....

Maryland is well coached, but Ohio will run them off the field with their speed and skill.

Does anyone really "like" to watch Michigan football right now?  Is it pleasurable to watch what goes on?  Has nothing to do with loving the team or the university, but just the simple act of watching how they perform against equal opposition hasn't been terribly enjoyable for awhile now.

For you guys and anyone else out there who doesn't want to watch Michigan football right now, email me your telephone numbers or send me your email address and I will let you know when Michigan is good again and then it will be fun to watch them again. That way, you know, you only have to watch them when they're good. And don't worry, nobody has ever coined a term describing this type of fandom. On a side note, I wonder what the weather is going to be like today. I hope it's fair....

You do realize there is a difference in the meanings of the words "want" and "like", correct?

To remove this from the context of football, we'll try a few examples for you.

I want to go to the dentist to get this cracked molar fixed, but I'm not going to like it.

I like to eat chocolate chip cookies, but I don't want to because I'm getting in shape.

I want to buy a new car, but I don't like having a car payment.

Hopefully this cleared up any comprehension issues you might have been having.

Which one do you see yourself falling under.... I like watching UM football but I don't want to. or I want to watch UM football but I don't like to. Either way, both seem to define fair weather-ness. Or let's remove football and use your examples.... I like going to the dentist so I have a good smile but I never want to. I want to eat chocolate chip cookies but I like being in shape. I'd like to buy a new car, but I don't want a car payment. They kinda seem interchangeable, no? I'm just busting some chops here, anyone who regulars this blog OBVIOUSLY isn't a fair weather fan. Otherwise you wouldn't be frequenting this here blog. PA in Spanish, don't they use the same word for love and want, te quiero?

I use this as my counter when people say things like who would want the UM job or if UM is even an elite job any more. Look how much press UM gets even when we're down, way down. What kind of attention do you think a new coach would get if he turned this thing around? I remember when RichRod beat ND the 1st time and that made the cover of SI, not the whole cover but Tate was on the top corner. This is still Michigan, fergodsakes, just not a very good Michigan right now.

Love Corso, but how many more years can this guy do this?  I wonder who replaces him now that he is essentially a legend of his own making.  Remember when Corso said "fuck" on air?  That was epic!

Corso must go on forever!  Who would have thought that the guy coaching Indiana for the legendary Anthony Carter catch would become one of the most fun reasons to watch a college pre-game show?  Lee Corso is basically what you get if Luther Van Damme from "Coach" became a college footbal commentator.  So much entertainment!

I'm sure the people are absolutely insufferable, but The Grove looks like a party I would like to attend.

Also, Corso looks fly in that seersucker. Even if it's after Labor Day.

Labor Day/White rule is BS.  Gotta give a few more weeks until it really starts to cool down, especially in the South where it obviously doesn't cool down.  (I was wearing my white suede bucks just a week and a half ago!)

The guys do look pretty good, I have to say, especially Corso, like you state.

Man I want to be down in Oxford*.  Looks like a grand ole time.  Let's just say my sartorial skills would fit me right in!

Nope, I'm going to a tailgate in 40 degree, partly sunny weather for a D3 school's team here in a bit.

*I very much dislike the Ole Miss foootball program, however.

Pretty mature response on his "favorite play", regarding Ameer Abdullah.  Not a TD but an A gap linebacker blitz pickup where he stalled said linebacker on pass-protection.

Now, I can sit down and watch. Changed my wife's oil this morning...

I think we need the "Dressed Up To Get Messed Up" sign one more time, because I think the dude holding seemed like he had begun this journey to latter half of the statement. No matter, looks like one hell of a party in Oxford today.

Also, that Wright Thompson segment was actually pretty cool, I think.

High interest games today

  • OSU v Maryland - Maryland's QB got hurt last week so will be interesting to see if he comes back.  If so this could be a quite good game as Maryland can score.
  • Texas A&M v Miss St Mullens - If Mullen wants that Florida job this is a statement game.  A&M almost lost to Big Bert last week and plays its traditional defense (i.e. none)
  • Bama v Ole Miss - Ole Miss is #11 and has recruited on par with the LSU, Texas, OSUs lately.  Let's see if Hugh Freeze can pull an upset
  • Baylor v Texas - Incredible offense versus quite good defense.  Unfortunately Texas has no offense but on 1 side of the ball it should be an interesting battle.
  • NC State v Clemson:  After nearly pulling an upset v FSU, NC State's coach could become one of the hottest candidates in the country with an upset or even close road loss (assuming NC State does very well the rest of the year)
  • Oklahoma v TCU -  TCU smashed Big 10 West powerhouse Minnesota so must be great.  But this is one of those tricky road games for a top 5 team
  • Stanford v Notre Dame - Notre Dame has played no one thus far, just a bunch of patsies, so we'll see how
  • Wisconsin v Northwestern - a week ago this looked like a bludgeoning of Northwestern but should be more interesting now these 2 match up
  • LSU v Auburn - LSU is coming off a rare home loss and a very young offense, going into an Auburn team no one is quite sure of
  • Brady Hoke v Rutgers - A 4-1 Rutgers goes for the win v a hapless squad as they make a push for the Big 10 East championship
  • Nebraska v MSU - two teams with some questions, one could not even beat Oregon (anyone can do that!) and the other almost lost to McNeese State.

Great slate!

I'm sure gameday is fun in the Grove, but it's like those people are from a completely different world, one filled with a complete lack of self-awareness and the douche meter turned WAY up.

People living and going about their business and lacking self-awareness (the opposite, people ONLY aware of themselves, is also negative for society) is not just a thing those people are doing...it's like this everywhere and likely even in da Bronx.  Douche bags also exist everywhere.

I missed much of GameDay doing errands.  When did ESPN do 10 minutes on the Ole Miss cheating allegations?  I'd like to go back and watch it on replay.  Thanks in advance.
