College Game Day Open Thread
They have officially jumped the shark: They are back at Georgia after just a few weeks. They need to just change the name to SEC Game Day already.
Even the Georgia fans are bored, not that many have even bothered to show up.
Hey man, if you are out of interesting ideas then at least get creative . . . go to Yale at UConn and see if UConn can get their first win. Something. Anything. Not this snoozer.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:29 AM ^
I'll offer a very weak argument in their defense ... today's slate of games doesn't offer much in the way of highly-ranked teams going against each other.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:49 AM ^
Usually when that happens, they get creative and go for something completely different . . . service academies, FCS teams, etc. A whole different direction.
It's not a big national matchup when they do that, but the energy and enthusiasm are off the wall at the place they visit. They are thrilled to be featured.
The Georgia fans are asleep today. Even they're bored. Been there done that.

Its a cool morning here in Georgia at the moment as well overcast/rainy (an hour or so west of Athens). Haven’t seen any of the show but it could explain the tepid fan response. That, and even as good as Kentucky is presently its not the same as playing Florida, Tennessee, or Alabama. This was the only good choice for a traditional game this week but as others have said, this was a week to get creative.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:52 AM ^
Agreed, if this was a UK home game the atmosphere would be electric, but Georgia fans just want to get out of this game with a good W that equates to taking care of business as usual against UK…they don’t see this a matchup of juggernauts.
October 16th, 2021 at 10:29 AM ^
I was able to check into Gameday via a streaming service (I don't have TV here in central WV), and I see your point: the fans in the background are really quiet. It changes the tenor of the whole show. It should have been at UCF vs. Cincinnati.
October 16th, 2021 at 10:42 AM ^
Michigan hockey plays again at 5:07pm ET today. Chance to sweep their invitational.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:32 AM ^
They should have done Farmageddon Iowa State vs. K-State.
October 16th, 2021 at 3:34 PM ^
Hell yeah!
October 16th, 2021 at 9:32 AM ^
Dont know if it has been mentioned. But I'm currently down in baton rouge. And it sounds like Mel tucker and LSU have mutual interest
October 16th, 2021 at 9:44 AM ^
Whoa, Karma! LSU would back that bank truck up; Mel is already shown a pension for following the money...
October 16th, 2021 at 11:17 AM ^
penchant
October 16th, 2021 at 11:19 AM ^
Right - a penchant for cash; cash for a pension.
October 16th, 2021 at 12:19 PM ^
Lol, a pension ahhaha
October 16th, 2021 at 9:49 AM ^
Going back to the well? The last guy they got from MSU turned out to be a pretty good coach.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:51 AM ^
It worked for Saban.
Mel, DO IT.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:02 AM ^
Was a topic brought up by Stewart Mandel on theathletic.com the other day. Where there’s smoke…there’s a couch in EL.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:22 AM ^
Whereupon Tucker will have an angry, emotional presser right before the Michigan game denying any such rumors and insists he's staying with his damn strong football team.
Then he'll be introduced as the new LSU coach after the regular season is over.
This scenario aside, I still think Meyer is the logical choice for those loons down in Baton Rouge.
October 16th, 2021 at 12:35 PM ^
And per John U Bacon yesterday, his sources are telling him that Urban will not make it beyond this season in Jax.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:23 AM ^
This deserves its own thread. Very interesting!
October 16th, 2021 at 11:42 AM ^
Tucker completely screwed over Colorado. There is no reason to think he would not do the same to MSU. Honestly hope this comes out before they play Michigan and becomes a huge distraction.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:44 AM ^
We have "twofer" potential here.
1. LSU could buy *really* high with Tucker and wind up at the Orgeron level again. Funny.
2. Sparty could lose a coach after two years, which never looks good. The departure would clearly show where they are in the pecking order. They'd have to go shopping again and they'd have another opportunity to screw up the hire. Also funny.
October 16th, 2021 at 12:20 PM ^
Love MGoBlog. “Mel tucker is an unproven nobody n sparty is so bad—> mel tucker is so good I hope LSU takes him away”
October 16th, 2021 at 9:33 AM ^
how can they stoops to this? KY at GA?
I'll show my self out.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:52 AM ^
This show is a dawg.

"I'm just trying to protect college football" -- James Franklin
Can I just take this moment to say - FUCK OFF, Frames! It was pretty clear what his defense was doing... Ole Miss did it, too, on Arkansas' last drive last week. At one point, the camera was showing the Rebels DL just standing around, and a DT looked towards the bench then slowly went down on his back while holding his knee. Complete bullshit.
Franklin is awful...
October 16th, 2021 at 9:55 AM ^
I think you put your finger on what annoys us so much about Franklin . . . all coaches blow smoke, but Franklin believes his own bullshit.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:10 AM ^
If you listen to John U. Bacon when he appears of the WTKA podcast he’s not afraid to talk about how much the leadership and the players at PSU dislike Franklin.
He wrote a book about PSU a few years ago and developed a bunch of relationships there.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:26 AM ^
For the record, Bacon wrote that book (4th and Long) during O'Brien's tenure. It's not the same regime.
I don't think Franklin is universally loved at PSU, but I think he has more support than not.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:51 AM ^
The Bearcats deserved this GameDay. I also dream one day of GameDay in Ypsilanti in front of the brick dick. Shut down cross street and get them some pizza from Tower Inn during the commercial.
Going to be a lot of Sparty love over the next two weeks.
October 16th, 2021 at 9:57 AM ^
That's a good thing. They thrive on disrespek. What happens when they don't have that fuel?
October 16th, 2021 at 11:18 AM ^
You know what’s funny is that they don’t like being an “expected to be good” program. I was talking with a coworker and said “It nice you guys are back to where you are expected to be” and he took that as an insult and said “we are not expected to be good.”
They love to play the chip on their shoulder and disrespect card and when they don’t have that they really have nothing.
October 16th, 2021 at 10:03 AM ^
CGD bias was on full display when they went to OU vs Texas over top-5 matchup Iowa vs Penn State. Couldn’t miss the chance to let everyone know they will be joining the SEC.
October 16th, 2021 at 10:30 AM ^
I hate bye weeks!!
October 16th, 2021 at 10:39 AM ^
Perhaps College Game Days needs a wake up call, pun intended on the fans seemingly asleep this morning. These decisions are made up by producers, top execs and the the show's panel members. Hard to blame any one person or persons and I suspect TV ratings should also suffer.
Until these execs can see that, maybe they'll get more creative in selecting a site in the near future.
October 16th, 2021 at 10:55 AM ^
You can tell that Reece Davis is not thrilled with the decision.

Ferris St. Vs. Grand Valley St.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
As a Grand Valley alum it pains me to see this rivalry going the way of Michigan/OSU.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:04 AM ^
Yes, this really was a blown opportunity by GameDay. Remarkably, GameDay has never done a D-2 game. Not once, it's the only division they haven't covered.
If not Allendale/Grand Rapids today, there were a couple other solid D-2 options for today. Valdosta State @ West Alabama and West Georgia @ West Florida are both top-20 matchups in the division.
Skipping Cincinnati was fine, given there's another very viable Bearcat home game (SMU @ Cincinnati) coming up on November 20. But going back to Georgia for the 2nd time in 15 days is just kind of ............ bleh.
October 16th, 2021 at 10:57 AM ^
It's reigning (wild)cats and dogs.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
This would’ve been a great week to go to some big FCS matchup or somewhere else outside of the box. They did Times Square in NYC a few years ago just to do something different. Instead they went right back to Athens after being there two weeks ago.
I doubt even most UGA fans are that excited about this matchup. The remainder of their schedule outside of Florida is a relative snoozer, and with Florida already having two losses it would take a monumental collapse for Georgia to not already be making gameplans for Alabama in the SEC title game.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:06 AM ^
Where should they be this week? #1 against another undefeated team.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:31 AM ^
They just mentioned the Mel Tucker to LSU mutual interest on the Fox Pregame as well. This is sure to rattle the locker room focus.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:32 AM ^
You just know they were debating between Athens and Austin.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:33 AM ^
If only for the sake of doing something different, go to Knoxville for Kiffin’s return to UT. Should be a big game and electric atmosphere at night with a lot of emotionally charged UT fans. First sell out in Neyland Stadium in years.
Who cares if UT sucks? It’s supposed to be a roadshow. The UT fans would’ve showed out better than UGA after just being there.

I laughed at the dentists and Kentucky sign. I was intrigued by the moontruth.net signs. I had to check it out.

Has Kirk been hitting the hotel buffet a little too much lately? The pandemic has not been good for his waist line.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:54 AM ^
Lol. Too much baggage under his eye. Either not sleeping well or too much booze.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:45 AM ^
Apparently, my browser thought that my comment about Kirk couldn’t fit into one post. It may be right.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:49 AM ^
I fully expect College Gameday to become SEC-oriented as their new contract with that conference really takes hold in the 2024 season.
October 16th, 2021 at 11:55 AM ^
Just change the name to SEC GameDay.
