Coach Beilein - Post Game Comments - "Walton out for the foreseeable future"

Submitted by True Blue 9 on

Was a fantastic game by the guys in Maize and Blue today. Sadly, UMHoops.com is reporting that Coach Beilein stated after the game that "Walton won't be back for the foreseeable future".

I think the team can still pull of 6 wins in the next 8 (probably losing at Maryland and Indiana) but I still have faith. Go Blue!

That's a good point! And I was completely impressed by MAAR today. We do miss Walton's rebounding (sounds strange saying that, being he's one of our shortest players) but having a healthy Walton is better, so hopefully we can have him back soon.

because Caris isn't coming back anyway, so the team would learn to play without him and come back "full". But Walton AND Caris being gone is probably not such a good thing for learning what it takes to win at a high level.

It would have bennefited Derrick to develop into option 1A, and as individuals MAAR, Dawkins, Chatman, and Zak will develop, but they need to grow in their roles off the ball just as much as on it.

Given how the season has played out it's not devastating, but it's also far from a good thing.

Seemed like he already stated why. So Walton could get used to be the #1 option because that is what he will be next year. MAAR and Dawkins were averaging more than 15 minutes a game since Caris went out even when Walton was still playing. MAAR and Dawkins would still be developing if Walton was still playing. Maybe their progress is slightly accelerated by Walton being hurt, but Walton is not progressing at all being hurt. Which is not a good thing.

I said nothing referring to the post game comments.. So no he can't time travel. He said the exact same thing that was posted here yesterday.. Idk how him saying it twice makes it more serious than what he said less than 24 hours ago..

If that's the case, they have to figure out how to get more out of Chatman, get Donnal healthy, and get Doyle to play more than 15-20 minutes a game. I think they need to play the 5's together more and move Irvin down or Dawkins down to the 2 when Spike or MAAR need a break. Dakich has filled in admirably, but his offensive game is limited. We need a Donnal or Bielfeldt to hit that wide open three. I haven't seen Dakich be able to do that. Every team we face is going to put their best defender on Irvin like State did today. So we have to be able to run some pick and role with Spike/MAAR and Bielfeldt/Donnal/Doyle to diversify the offense. Otherwise,it's a bunch of guys standing around waiting for Irvin to create.

Moving guys around isn't going to magicly make the team more experienced. They haven't abandoned the pick and roll, just aren't experienced enough to run it smoothly yet. They should run the offense in the way that it's going to be run in the future.

but like Raftery said during the telecast.  He's running out of band aids. . .

This is one of the better coaching jobs I've ever seen.

Could get B1G Coach of the year.

I don't get mad watching this team. I'm actually enjoying watching our youth gain valuable experience. There were times over the last few seasons I would throw shit at a wall when playing below expectations.

At this point this has become solely a developmental season. I think it'll serve us well in the longterm for these young guys to get significant minutes in B1G play. if everyone is back next year we could be a force with depth.

Over and over. Come April 2017, everyone is going to look back at this year as the foundation that led to 2 great years. The development is happening. The pieces are falling in to place, this will be fun.....

we are better with him on the bench..Sorry but he scores little and turns the ball over ALOT..Irving has been a DISASTER..let the new guys play there better

Need Dawkins to cover the 2 and Irvin the 3 for 80+% of the game because this roster is thin. Hopefully Donnal can play some quality 4 so Max and Doyle hold the 5. The rest of the roster can play a few minutes with Beilein hiding them, but everything rides on the top 6.

I hope everyone eligible to come back next year comes back.  Michigan has gone to OT in two games in which they were severe underdogs and lost both.  Those tend to even out over time.  This really sucks, but there is still a great future ahead in Ann Arbor.

I was thinking the same thing. Even with the possibility of Caris leaving, this team will be back and better than ever. It's great when our guys get the early NBA call, but it's nice for us to know what we'll have on the floor next year. I like what I see.

Well at this point, the season is more or less about getting as many guys playing time as possible, and hopefully making some kind of post season tournament for that much more playing times and experience.

We're not where we want to be this year, but a lot of guys will be coming back next year with a lot of playing time under their belts. Beilein is a master developer, and if we find some kind of presence down low next year, we'll be in great shape.

just want to give props to Spike MF Albrecht! The kid is still playing with that undisclosed nagging injury, but showed his toughness with a variety of floaters and hustle plays. Ran the offense very well and hit some clutch baskets late.
