CCish: Helmet Stickers
I know there was a thread a couple months back about helmet stickers and how Carr dumped them, but now that there is a non zero chance that JH will consider coming to us (barring a CC), it looks like he will bring his helmet stickers policy that he uses at stanford. I personally am not a huge fan and think the helmets look clean without them but also realize they were a michigan tradition in the past and am not open to the re-instating. How do the Michigan Men on this site feel about a possible return.

Before horse? Or chickens hatched, or something?

Not a bad discussion, but maybe a mite premature.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:34 PM ^
The most annoying threads are those with responses discussing the merit of the OP. Thanks.

I think OP is an outstanding gentleman! ANNOY THAT
...seriously though, I'd like you to point out the part of that comment that is intended as snide, sarcastic, or even discussing the merit of the OP. There isn't one. Well, sort of, but positively: he said it was a good discussion if it weren't premature. Which it is. He even said it pretty nicely, not scoldingly, if you ask me, with "maybe a mite premature".
If you still aren't convinced, I think the most annoying comments are sarcastic attempts to reply to a comment with regard to the merit of that comment. So there. (This part is supposed to be taken lightly)

and adds extra motivation for players to earn the stickers ... I'm all for it.
Don't touch the wings though!

If it takes stickers and a urinal of gold to get Harbaugh then so be it!
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
I don't always HERP, but when I do HERP, I DERP.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
Those stickers would totally destroy any enjoyment I'd derive from not sucking against ranked teams. If Desmond could rock them, I can handle them.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
If Charles Woodson didn't wear them...then what do I THINK?!
Oh, wait, Tom Harmon didn't have helmet stickers, therefore:
2 Heisman Winners > 1 Heisman Winner = No Helmet Stickers
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
I may be the only one who doesn't mind if they come back, but then again my formative years of Michigan fandom came seeing the helmet stickers flying down the field.
Fun note about the old stickers: There's actually two variations, one for the left side of the helmet and one for the right, with the little wolverine always facing towards the back of the helmet.

Either way, I'm cool with it as long as the team is cool with it. However, could they somehow be a little smaller or something so they take away less from the sleekness of our helmet design?
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:53 PM ^
I think they look cool.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:56 PM ^
I'm a traditionalist and I believe stickers belong in a sticker book.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:57 PM ^
All in on the stickers. We get the coach too right?
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:59 PM ^
no, dave brandon is negotiating for the Stanford Marching Band and the Tree.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
Was funny. I wonder what we have to give in return. (They want a silver maned DC?)
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
like a fair trade to me.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:30 PM ^
Can we get the dollies instead of the tree?
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
Sappy branch boner.

Real mascots don't wear shoes.
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:59 PM ^
Just don't let the organizers of the Hash Bash make them, we don't want to have the same helmet stickers as OSU.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:28 PM ^
IT'S A BUCKEYE LEAF DAMMIT!!!
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:53 PM ^
YEAH, BUCKEYE LEAVES! ! ! WE KEEP THEM IN OUR "DECORATIVE GLASS SCULPTURES"! ! !

fits well with this discussion...
and I've always wanted to comment that though I don't watch King of Queens, I laugh at it when I see it. Because I can imagine my dad saying the same thing in response to me:
"Hey dad, how many stamps do I need for this letter?"
"Probably one, I would think." (slightly annoyed/sarcastic due to being interrupted while reading)
"But... it's sort of heavy, what if they send it back for too little postage?" (overly worried and overthinking the situation as usual)
January 3rd, 2011 at 10:59 PM ^
I actually think Bo was one of the first to use them at Miami, OH. I think it is a cool way for some of the lineman to get recognition, especially from the more casual fan. A guy like Shilling or Graham would have their helmets covered by the OSU game.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
Yep. Bo awarded tomahawks in the mid 60's, and brought it to Michigan. In the interim, Woody started handing out gigantic buckeye stickers (look at the pictures of the early buckeyes, they're HUGE).
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:22 PM ^
One of Bo's assistants at Miami came up with the idea. He was the coach of the freshmen team and came up with the idea when he looked at photos of WWII fighter pilots with their kills painted on the side of their aircraft. After he started awarding the stickers to the freshman team he brought the idea to Bo, who implemented it for the varsity squad.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
John Pont, right?
His daughter wrote a book about all the coaches who came out of the Miami coaching tree a few years back. It's pretty good for some under-told Bo stories.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:00 PM ^
Instead of fucking with the helmet can they use patches on the jersey.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
"I know that many Michigan fans feel like we haven't been the football program that they expect us to be. Frankly, we haven't been as successful as we want to be. So we're making a change. This is not an easy decision, but we felt it was time to return to our roots. Allow me to introduce you to...
the new Fudgem Helmet Sticker."
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^
They look terrible.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
dive at one hole play is called, penetrate and stay gap sound.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:17 PM ^
Why would you take the greatest looking helmet in all of football, with a great history, and attach tchotchkes to it? We're better than that. It was a tradition who's time has passed.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:17 PM ^
The stickers look tacky as hell on every helmet I've seen them on. Are these disciplined young men or twittering tweens bedazzling their cell phones? And why on earth would we want to muddle up the most recognizable helmet design in sports? Plus, stickers celebrate individual accomplishment - I thought we wanted to be about the team?
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
The stickers were pioneered by Miami(OH) while Bo was there, and he brought them to Michigan. Tacky, maybe. Historic, yes.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:35 PM ^
So, because Bo did it, it can't possibly be wrong? My main issue is that they're hideous, not that they are anti-traditional. But I do think they undermine Bo's own theory of (The Team)^3 by celebrating individual accomplishment and public accolades above team success. The Team (and your opponent) will know who deserves recognition. Let your play speak for itself, not your head-flair.
Helmet stickers are like those chestfuls of ribbons tinpot dictators always wear. Empty puffery signifying vanity more than skill.
Plus the Buckeyes are more famous for them, and I'd rather not look like we're copying Buckeyes (and really, I can forgive the reefer-esque buckeye leaves to some extent because their helmets are at least blank canvases, rather than iconic on their own).
At any rate, if we must award flair, I would propose dreadlocks. You earn one dreadlock hair extension for each great play - if you look like Denard at the end of the year, you're a good player.
January 4th, 2011 at 12:40 AM ^
they were given out for team and unit accomplishments....not just individual
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:54 PM ^
bedazzling! that's what we need! if stickers are appropriate for ordinary helmets, our extraordinary helmets clearly demand to be bedazzled.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:26 PM ^
Blech. From a purely aesthetic (as opposed to tradition) standpoint, I'd rather have Pro Combat. And I'm not even kidding that much.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:26 PM ^
I think if they were a wee bit smaller I'd be cool with them
January 4th, 2011 at 1:10 AM ^
Make them a little different.
Maybe not smaller, but just the wolverine in yellow
Lose the big yellow ovals.
there's got to be sticker technology to do that these days.
January 4th, 2011 at 3:25 AM ^
Whipped this up in a few min with paint.net to see what it would look like. I realize the maize is a bit off, but I didn't feel like re-doing it to fix the color.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:33 PM ^
then I'm all for stickers. Honestly, if some geek ran the numbers, I'm guessing our winning percentage was HIGHER with stickers than without stickers. And I want a higher winning percentage, so if that means stickers, great!
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:40 PM ^
I think said geek would tell you to go back and re-study the distinction between correlation and causality ;)
EDIT: Plus if you go down that road, we'd have to get rid of not only the stickers, but the wings. And then the helmets entirely. If it means we get Yost's winning percentage...
January 4th, 2011 at 1:05 AM ^
Sarcasm, my friend, is best when not spelled out.
Obviously, correlation, not causality. My mistake was not in confusing correlation and causality. My mistake was in assuming sarcasm would be understood, because all Michigan fans are intelligent enough to understand the diff btw cause and correlation.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:40 PM ^
correlation =/= causation.
edit: oops. just beat me to it.
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
Ohio State's Stickers remind me of a Pot Leaf sticker. I am just saying.
If HARBAUGH can win, i am ok with it! And HARBAUGH CAN WIN!!
