Can you be a "Michigan man" if...

Submitted by MGOARMY on
A week ago I got was at a party when I noticed a girl wearing a sparty shirt. Drunk as I was, I couldn't help but talk a lil bit of friendly smack, after wich I was told I was a walmart wolverine because I didn't attend Michigan. My rebutle was that I had been a diehard Michigan fan scince I was old enough to talk. Point in case when I was real young and we lost to northwestern(95?) I was outside after the game playing with my Michigan football, in my riddell football outfit(plastic M helmet with the cheap jersey and pants)some random person drove by and shouted MICHIGAN SUCKS. As they stopped at the light, I picked up a rock and threw it at their truck, breaking a window. The guy came up to my house to talk to my dad afterwords and my dad wrote them a check to fix the window. My question is, Regardless of how much your emotionally attached to the program, can you be a "Michigan Man" if you never attended the University of Michigan?

89 hundred bazillion times. The answer is no. She has probably ruined your life. You're toast. I'm guessing that going up to a chick in a Sparty shirt and giving her shit didn't end up with you getting a blow job from her. Way to go there, sport.

so 89 bazillion times for someone like you and me who have been on here for less then 2 months. And I think you can be a true fan as long as they are your team over your actual school.

this site always helps (W3 Schools) http://www.w3schools.com/html/tryit.asp?filename=tryhtml_pulpitimage There's a try it yourself feature, and it allows you test out the html code. Essentially, the photo needs to be online (so you can provide the image source). You can typically right click a photo and copy image location, then paste it where the code reads src = "put your URL here" Then just copy and paste it into the response box here.

Some people really do need a serious grammar lesson before posting. Ever since my preparation for the GMAT verbal section, I can't help but notice grammatical errors and it's so annoying to read. Sometimes I wish I didn't retain all of the sentence correction info into my long-term memory. I can't remember what I ate for lunch, but subject/verb agreement is permanently etched into my brain.

I think a Michigan man or woman should only be used for somebody that makes special contributions to the university, like Bo Schembechler or Charles Woodson or the walk on that made it as a starter in his senior year.

You can support your local fire department and not be a fireman, you can hang an American flag outside your house and not be in the Army. Always support those things you believe in. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a huge ass.

Sure, you can hang a flag or put a bumper sticker on your car, but that doesn't make you a "fireman" or a "veteran." Obviously, Michigan gear doesn't make you a "varsity letterman" either, so the question is whether Michigan Man extends beyond athletics. I personally think it's something that, really, only belongs to the imagination of Bo Schembechler and thus to the football team. The rest of us have to deal with being mere alumni, fans, or both.

Seriously, though, no. It's hardly a big deal, though; I attended twice and I'm pretty sure I'm not considered a "Michigan Man."

I went to Michigan, and graduated from Michigan. I live and die for Michigan. I say that you can be a Michigan Man (or Woman) if you love UM as an entity, University, "idea" as much as you love the football team... no matter if you are an alum or not All things U of M = Michigan Man Just football = A fan

I like your explanation. Unfortunately I didn't get into Michigan for undergrad, I went to Miami (NTM). But I love everything that is Michigan, not just football. That said, I don't consider myself a Michigan Man b/c I never attended nor have I had the ability to represent the university with the class that is required of a Michigan Man. However it is my life's dream and current singular goal to get my MBA from Michigan. I've loved Michigan since I was old enough to walk, and I can think of no finer institution of higher learning to prepare me for the high level business world. If the timing works out the way I'm planning then I will be there for Devin's RS jr and sr years. That would be epic.

but it would seem to me that your loyalty, ambition, humility and understanding of M as someplace/something special would qualify you, regardless of whether you attendended for undergrad or will attend there for your MBA. Seems you represent it quite well and with class already, give yourself some credit.

There was a really good diary a little bit back that there are 3 kinds of fans, the die-hards that go here, the yuppy people who go here and forget about football after the season, and the "walmart wolverine". He pretty much said that the only ones that aren't real michigan fans and thus michigan men are the ones that are the yuppies really don't care about it. So in short, Yes, yes you can.

Did you pay your annual Michigan Man fees? If not, you can pay your yearly dues by clicking the button at the top right of the page labeled "Beveled Guilt."

Just embrace it. If your anything like me you grew up listening to Ufer/Beckman call the game on Saturday while you threw the ball around in the yard with your brothers. You grew up a fan& always will be. For one reason or another it didn't work out for you to attend UofM. Welcome to the club fellow "walmart wolverine". Not to mention that you have been known to throw rocks at cars. That automatically qualifies you. When Bo talked about being a "Michigan man" while sending Frieder packing prior to the national title run it was sweet. The constant reference to the term now is overkill& lame imo.

I hope people realize how douchey it sounds when you tell someone they can't be part of a half-real perceived group of people just because they don't go to Michigan. Victors, you can do whatever the hell you want. Ten bucks says that if you offered UM a donation they'd dub you a Michigan Man instantly.

Fuck Spartan fans. You could work as a janitor with no ties to that damn school whatsoever and it's fine to root for State. But the minute someone declares they're a Michigan fan, you hear that Walmart Wolverine shit. I bet that skank doesn't have any paper from fucking Everest let alone Michigan Stank. I usually say one of two things to douchebags like them. 1.) "If I'm a Walmart Wolverine, then that must make you a Save-A-Lot Spartan." 2.)"If it weren't for Walmart Wolverines, then your mammmy would probably be out of work now wouldn't she." I find that usually shuts them up, or they give me the lighten up speech which earns them the go to hell speech. I haven't lived a life in which I have many regrets, but the one thing I kick myself in the ass for almost daily (since I'm a 30 year old college student) is for not having my shit together when I was in high school, so that I could have had at least a shot at attending the best damn university in the land. I may not have attended Michigan, but my love and respect for all things Michigan is just as deep as ANYONE'S that has graduated from there. If someone doesn't like it, that's their problem. I will continue to love U of M until the day I die.

It's a stupid argument and the fact that a Sparty is the one that called you a "walmart wolverine" doesn't surprise me. They're the ONLY ones who do. Only they would make a statement like that despite the absence of logic behind it. Honestly what makes a person a part of a group? Is it not their dedication as well as their association? I would love to see how Spartans would deal with a fan of State who did not go to State. Please they would be hypocrites and it only proves that they are complete morons. I get tons of shit for this too. Being a diehard Michigan fan, going to CMU, and having plenty of friends who go to State, I have to constantly mind-rape them with facts and show them how/why/where they are wrong. But they never quit, and they never will.

They don't have a problem with the legion of MSU basketball fans who never stepped foot on campus in East Lansing. They just can't get over the fact that people in this state choose to root for UofM. I always wonder if "little brother" fans in other states do the same thing, or if this is exclusively a sparty trait.... Do Oklahoma St. fans call OU fans who didn't attend OU sav-a-lot sooners? Do Georgia tech fans call UGA fans Big Lot Bulldogs? I'm thinking it's just a sparty thing because sparty fans are the biggest bunch of inferiority complex-having ass rags on the planet. My grades weren't good enough to attend one of the finest public institutions in the country, so I went elsewhere. But I was raised on UofM, I'm still there tailgating at Pioneer every week, I'm still in the Big House every week cheering for the football team, and win or lose, I'm still supporting all UofM athletics. Whether you're an alum or not, if you have ever attended a game, or cheered on the Wolverines in any capacity, you're part of one of the greatest, and most storied sports programs in the country. And sparty, well, they're not.

I believe the term "walmart wolverine" is meant to be disparaging and I would never use it to describe a supporter of the UofM. Also, I believe the concept of the "Michigan Man" predates Coach Schembechler by several decades. I believe the university has long stood for two things that help define it and distinguish it from other places (although the UofM certainly has no patent on these two things): 1. A belief in hard work in order to do things well. 2. Doing them honorably. If you believe in these two ethics, victorsandbest, you are a Michigan Man.
