Cameron Gordon ('13): Michigan State Police Recruit

Submitted by LLG on

Cameron Gordon graduated in 2013 (LSA), went undrafted, signed with the New England Patriots (and was high-school teammate with former QB Devin Gardner).  He was placed on the team's injured reserve and won a superbowl ring when the Patriots beat the Seahawks.

After a couple of seasons of moving around, Gordon decided to retire. He asked himself: “What is another career that will allow me to have an impact, have influence on younger kids and also leave behind a positive legacy?” he told DetroitNews.com. “Instantly, state trooper—law enforcement—jumped into my mind.” Gordon expects to graduate from the 133rd Recruit Class of the Michigan State Police at the end of November.

Politico published an interview with him yesterday.

Sounds like a guy who represents Michigan well.

than what I feared.  My initial reaction was that this title was a snarky way of saying Cam had been arrested.  Glad that wasn't the case, and congrats to the young man!

If you're not happy with the first 6 minute prison abs, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B"

If your goal is to influence children, the MSP seems like an odd choice, but I am admittedly out of touch on this.  Years ago when I was still in Michigan, the Michigan State Police were not viewed as the best way to impact people on the street.  They were good at highway patrol, evidence analysis, and a very professional and well-trained officers worthy of respect.  (Plus a great Springsteen song!)  They were some of the smartest, most disciplined, and capable officers you'd ever meet.  But I never saw them interacting with kids much.

City cops and county deputies seemed to have much more interaction with the community.  Both through community-based policing and from more traditional policing.  So I ask this from a mixture of experience (dated) and ignorance (current) - to what extent does the MSP interact with the community and kids?

My experience is that MSP has community outreach programs. But you're right that the local officers probably do more to interact with the community day to day. Just my experience and observation. Trooper schools are increasingly rare, so the opportunity might not come again for a while. Additionally, a lot of new troopers end up serving in Detroit for the first couple years, so the level of community interaction is likely higher there.

This summer I was at a state park with my wife and two daughters(5 and 2 years of age). A MSP officer was rolling through and called us over and gave each of my daughters a coloring book and a plastic star badge. He spent a few minutes asking my oldest girl what she liked best about the park and whatnot. It was a very positive experience for my family.

But it's topics like this that get turned into something that shouldnt. Immediate criticism of police. Keep the bashing to yourself and focus on this man and his career choice. We rooted for him on the field now root for him off of it

and I’m in the process of helping a former Michigan Women’s Basketball player get into the State Police. She is a great candidate. Physically able, very intelligent and would make a great recruit. Hope she gets to join the “Blue Cloth”. Glad to see Cam in the Department. I’ll be up at the academy next week. Hopefully I can watch some of the training.
