BTN Feature on Coach Hutch; the ladies play tomorrow (Wednesday 2:30 pm vs Penn St)

Woulda said SIAP but I did look back and can't see that this was mentioned - apologies if this is old news.

The BTN has been airing a feature on coach Hutch .  It's part of a series called "B1G Trailblazers".  I watched it the other day and found it very compelling and well done.  I highly recommend M fans seek it out and set their DVR's.  Far as I can tell it is on again today in a couple hrs.  Tomorrow am early.  Then after our game vs. PSU but who knows, that'll prob be time permitting.  It is OnDemand on my system as well.

We can claim "winningest" in a few things.  M is still the only - and probably for the forseable future - "northern" team to win a Natty.  They are the only northern team to get to the championship twice.  Although - if you watch the feature - you will realize there was another Michigan team that did win it all.

Was thinking that I've seen Pat Summit featured on 60 minutes over the years at least once maybe more.  There was an HBO (I believe) doc on her.  Not so much for Hutch unless I missed it or my Google is broke, but she is deserving of it and has much to tell.  Was also thinking about the Mt. Rushmore question - for coaches.  M should probably have one for football and one for "all other sports".  She would certainly be 1st candidate for the latter but may be worthy of the 1st.  "Trailblazer" is apt.

Ladies vs. PSU tomorrow 2:30 EDT.  BTN

I feel like expose' might be the wrong word choice here, unless BTN is trying to shock us with some new revelations, but I look forward to learning more about Coach Hutch.

Perhaps you're right.  For whatever reason I never felt like the word had negative conotations.  For me expose' has always translated to: extensive interview or in-depth interview and reporting.  Maybe I have that wrong.  It could mean print reporting or video and be either positive, negative, or neutral.  I'm quite certain that Playboy and Time mag articles were labeled as expose's.  If there is an extensive article or series in the local paper I consider it an expose'.

It's my first attempt at a thread in a year or more and it was tough enough to figure out how to post it.  Editing is not optional.  And I know how it works around here so I'll take whats comin.

Seth usually nukes my shit anyway cause he loves me so much.  So there's the nuclear option.

Scared me for a minute there. When Hutch got here, what was different about her was that taking on the system was just who she was. There was nothing controversial about her hiring or how she ran the team. She had an idea of how things should be run and expected her players to dedicate themselves to the sport.

If you've watched them over the years, they really seem to be enjoying themselves, too. The wins just started accumulating. At a university where women's programs were last in the league as often as not, it was novel.

This was a rough season. The power infusion and depth the freshmen were going to provide the lineup didn't happen. Maybe next year those same players will contribute, but only one freshman is currently starting and Michigan is fairly close to last in the country in home run offense. The defense has taken a few steps back as well.

The pitching was still a team strength, but losing three pitchers from last season, two to the portal, and not bringing in any recruits (the one high school pitcher in the group seems not to be training as a pitcher any more) meant it was no longer the best in the league. They brought in LeBeau from Kent State, who was solid against weaker competition, but they really didn't have an answer for the better offenses. Derkowski had moments when she looked like she could be an ace, but had trouble preventing the long ball.

So they ended up 10th in the league, losing eight of their last nine in-conference as they faced all the top teams right at the end of the schedule. They play Penn State tomorrow. Probably a 50/50 shot at advancing to the quarterfinals, but only a tiny chance to win the Big Ten tournament.

They are currently eighth in the league in RPI, sitting at 49th overall. That will not gain an invitation to the NCAAs. They had been in tournament range until the last week or so, but the good RPI numbers from playing a strong non-conference schedule slowly get absorbed into the conference schedule as the season progresses. I think the league only gets four or maybe five teams this year, unless someone unexpected makes some noise in the tournament.

Hutch was a student at Everett High School in Lansing. She was 2 years ahead of Earvin Johnson.
If I have my dates right, sometime during Hutch’s freshman year at Everett, a 2-year kid across the street from the school got up from his nap, climbed out of his crib, stripped off his diaper, put rubber bands on his arms and legs, wandered outside and exposed himself to the world.

+1 for correctly using the word "feature" in the body

-1 for incorrectly using the word "expose" in the title

+1 informative

Looks like you come out ahead, thanks OP for the info!

Love Coach Hutch. This year's team is brutal though especially their hitting. I wonder if they should have conducted a national search for coach last August. Hopefully, this isn't a Greg Gard following Bo Ryan situation.

Carol Hutchins had a remarkable career at M.  And it wasn't "just" that she established the record as the winningest coach in the history of NCAA softball.  It was how she got there.  Starting as an MSU grad who had enough confidence to submit her resume for the job.  And then she was hired at $3K/year (or so) and took on two other jobs to support herself at our inestimable university!  Not to mention coaching a sport that provided minimal momentum from past success, or even fans.

So she had many more challenges than dealing with players and assistants, but certainly those provided the historical highlights.  I cannot imagine another coach at this U who dealt with adversity better and came out smelling like a rose!!  Her record speaks for itself.  She deserves to be in the pantheon of M coaches as well as HOF coaching in any sport.  And we are lucky enough to be her witnesses!

God bless Carol Hutchins!  Another incredible part of the M legacy.

Excellent one hour "revelation" (not expose!).
