A sports radio station in Tennessee tried to find reasons why Tennessee's defense dropped down with Bob Shoop there, when the expectations were they would shoot up:

But during that game against Virginia Tech, linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. and defensive end LaTroy Lewis both got injured in what marked the beginning for an awful trend of injuries that would plague the Vols defense for the entire season....

great informational post. you can probably delete all of the rankings list graphics and just post the rankings to make it easier for the readers to digest. just my two cents.

I don't know. But what does any of it mean, man? What if I told you that what we perceive as reality is nothing but a construct? That time itself does not exist? That the past, present, and future exist simultaneously, and that our sense of a 'passage' of time is a construct of the mind? That our senses are only capable of collecting limited data along narrow spectra--perhaps a fraction of the overall data available--and that the mind uses this paucity to construct a reality that amounts the little more than the illusion of order out of chaos? That, given this, it seems impossible to regard life as any more than one brief howling absurdity?

Anyway, love the hires! Shoop has experience running zone coverage in 3-4s and 3-3-5s, and Jean-Mary seems perfect for a 'built-to-spill' linebacker crew that aggressively fills gaps, plus he can recruit!

Albert Einstein would disagree, and I'll trust his math.

"...our senses are only capable of collecting limited data along narrow spectra--perhaps a fraction of the overall data available..."

This is very true, as science has proven.  I mean, night vision goggles, right?

Two things:

1.  This is likely the longest OP in the history of MGoBlog.

2.  Now with Shoop getting a lot of run here, I can't get that shitty Salt N Pepa song out of my head.

While Shoop seems like a capable DC with more ups than downs it is difficult to extrapolate anything from Jean-mary's tenure as it felt like Strong was the defacto DC at USF

Charlie Strong is out of work so it was definitely a smart move. :)

If Jean-Mary does well at Michigan he'll be targeted by other programs for his recruiting prowess. Strong kept him by making him his DC. We've seen the interest in Partridge. BJM will be a co-DC somewhere very soon as long as he recruits at a high level.

I think it's realistic to hope he'll stick around for a couple of years, unlike with Shoop. Maybe Harbaugh will go with co-DCs next time. It might add a little stability to his defensive staff.

Ezekiel Creatures- Thanks for all of the work.
I will interested to see how these two additions come together with the rest of the staff. Clearly lots of experience with creating defensive systems and high level recruiting with regards to BJM.
Concerning the rankings of their defensive units- it speaks to the importance of scheme, but also depth and health of your talent on that side of the ball. Shoop’s rankings  at PSU elevate with the quality of player. At Miss St he elevated the Defense that was super talented when he arrived(3 highly drafted players).
I don’t know what things will look like or how much influence Brown will give them(or for how long), but there is more coaching talent in Ann Arbor today and that’s a good thing.

For as long as this post is, there are maybe 10 lines that need to actually be read.  The lists were gratuitous, they provide no relevant information aside from the stat line for the defense (which could have been plucked out).  Perhaps a stat line comparison to the #1 defense may be useful for some, but again, too much extraneous information not relative to the post was included.

Also, who generated these lists?  Are they the NCAA's numbers?  ESPN's?  SP+/S&P+?  Its a cool list of numbers, which is probably fine (I mean, what are the differences between the various ratings services?), but some reference for what we're looking at would be nice.

The comparison to what defenses did before and after these guys were DC is a good discussion to have, and certainly valid to what might happen with M's defense going forward.  But I thought such a llooooooonnnngggggggg OP would have contained more information!

I have to say, I’m disappointed by the lack of fulfillment I received by such a long piece. Now that I’m interested, I’ll take it from here and get what I need for myself.

Thanks for the info OP, but I feel you could avoid all the pictures and just put the info in a table for easier presentation (use tableizer). I trust that you've done your homework and aren't making up the numbers lol

I like both hires. Maybe Shoop stays home and they send Wright out on the trail. After all, the recruits will be spending as much time with Wright as with Shoop.

I could be mistaken but I believe only on-field coaches are allowed to recruit off-site. That would preclude Wright from going out on the trail but he could connect with recruits once they're on campus.

BJM looks to have impressive recruiting chops so he should be an asset in that department.

I liked this post and found it very useful.

i just need you to know that had you just said a team’s defense was ranked 20... I would have believed you without the chart. #Trust

Ezekiels Creatures,

Appreciate the thorough report. Thanks.

Reminds me of the occurrence years ago when an inmate from the psychiatric unit of the nearby prison escaped and raped the first woman he saw. The editor of the local paper assigned the story to their cub reporter who returned a few hours later with a 7 page article. While thorough, the editor explained it was too long and needed to be shortened, so the cub reporter reworked it and returned with a three page article. Once again the editor praised the reporter but explained is was still too long, so the cub reporter again shortened it and returned with a one page story.

The editor explained that the reporter was getting close to the appropriate length.

Shortly thereafter the cub reporter returned with a one sentence story, "Nut bolts and screws."

All of this means very little. These guys are coming in as ASSISTANT coaches. Don Brown is still the DC and they will run his schemes. That means Michigan will continue to struggle eliminating the big plays against teams like OSU and beat up on teams like Purdue. I don’t see anything changing from the 8,9, 10 win ceiling that has been set including a loss to any SEC team in a bowl.

2 great hires imo. Also first year at Tennessee he didnt make the defense learn his terminology he adjusted and learned theirs to make it better on the players. This is Shoop I am referring to.  Also from some of former player comments say they are both bright and considered gurus in defense.  I dont expect Shoop to be here longer then a year unless he is groomed to be Browns eventual replacement.  Hopefully  Brian Jean-Mary  will be here longer.

Miss St even with a drop off this year held LSU to their second lowest point total and below their team yardage per game totals. Burrow specifically talked about Shoop having complex defenses called on third down that caused confusion on the LSU side. LSU was a historic offense this year and Miss St still held them to 36 points even with a much less talented team.

If that is why Shoop was hired, I'm all for it. Something has to be done to slow down these new, very high scoring offenses. Maybe Shoop and Brown together can make the recipe.
