Blaming Poole

I rarely post anything to the board unless there is a comment to which I must reply. Listening to the WTKA Roundtable yesterday, it sounds like there is a rift between Jordan, his family and...the fanbase (?). So much so that it was suggested he would seriously consider transferring if he would not have to sit out a year. Before I interject my opinionated remarks, I'd like to have more information first on what other may know about the situation.

The impetus behind me actually creating a post over this was ESPN's ad for the 30 for 30 re-Air of the Fab 5. Their promo photo is, of course, C Webb calling a timeout to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I was 10 at the time but the Fab 5 is what drew a Columbus Ohio native to become a fan of UM basketball. I wasn't even a football fan as of that point in my life. I am not privy to the details surrounding C Webb distancing himself from the University until this passed year due to his book release. I am not a UM alum so I am one of those die hard fans that didn't go to the school so am looked at as a secondary level fan in the eyes of the REAL Michigan fans.

Someone help my ignorance because the consensus of opinions around the country (I live in Dallas now for the last 7 years) is that the UM fan base consists of a lot of country club goers with their noses stuck up in the air. If you think defending your loyalty against Sparty is tough, try having a FB and Twitter full of Buckeye fans who have owned us. My biggest problem in this instance is the narrative may be actually true. I mean are we really that entitled that we alienate and criticize our players/student athletes because they don't live up to our standards and they caused us disappointment for an afternoon? Sorry for the long post. I reserve further comment for when/if anyone has a substantive response.

I touched on it below.  The Webber play in a vacuum was not that, but the situation as a whole was that.  We lead by as many as 8 in the second half, by 4 at the four minute mark, and we missed 10 of our last 12 shots and turned the ball over 3 times after the last TV timeout.  I see why somebody would remember it that way despite being ahead when Webber called the timeout.  We had no business losing the game and it took a very high level of jackassery to do so.

Like I said I was 10. I dont go back an re watch heartbreaks on youtube. I have not rewatched the 2013 title game. I left the game in San Antonio early in the 2nd half and did not go back to watch why we didn't win. The last score I saw of the OSU game was 41-19. This is the way the world remembers what happened, but thanks for the correction.

You left the game early in the second half? You arent by chance a Co-Defensive coordinator are you?

Also with Poole and the fans? Honestly if we are too tough of a fanbase boy is he in for a fun future. The press that comes out on our “negative” fans is always fun. Everyone knows we have the most boisterous loud mouth fans. Go into Michigan stadium its so loud you can barely here the piped in music. Give me a break with the “they are mean to me” shit.

Michigan has an enormous fanbase. Many are classy people, but we also get the weirdos whose whole lives revolve around these kids, and they don't understand that sports are played by real people with real feelings.

They'll go on Twitter and trash everybody. And there's a lot of these types. It's sad, but it always seems that our "vocal minority" is more vocal than the average fanbase, and it also is inherently bigger.

Honestly, Michigan football and basketball players shouldn't use Twitter. It cannot be good for their mental health

The Michigan fanbase is very big, and as you mentioned can be a bit more vocal than most, but it happens in every fanbase unfortunately. We had a similar issue with Brian Lewerke before we finally told everyone that his shoulder was hurt (and unfortunately even after). It was actually mentioned in some articles that he would go on Twitter at night just to go through his timeline like a normal person would do, and he would see all of those mentions, which would suck for anyone. There are some awful fans in every fanbase who just like to sit there with their keyboards and criticize and insult people, and it's very unfortunate.

It definitely is, and I also think that because it's so big, it might attract more of the attention-seeker types who are more prone to this sort of behavior. The vast majority of the problem isn't the actual fans, it's the idiots that hop on the bandwagon and start spewing stuff to get attention. It happens with any fanbase, but you guys get more of it because you have so many fans.

For whatever reason, people tend to remember and dwell on negatives as opposed to positives.  You can compliment and encourage a person fifty times but one or two vicious insults can send the person into a tailspin of anger and self-doubt.

Couple that with the fact that fans tend to post their negative reactions on social media a lot faster than reactions of disappointed encouragement and you have the recipe for bitterness.

There are a lot of mouth breather Michigan fans on Twitter that make the fan base look bad. Athletes are use to this by now (unfortunately) so it’s not a big deal. His dad was probably taking out some frustrations online. Guess we’ll see if there is more to it in time

I heard another show discussing the situation and I came away with the notion that the rift was probably more between John B. and Poole or Poole and John B's scheme.

Also, if Poole and/or his family cave to fan criticism then he will never make it as an athlete. I doubt Twitter comments will steer his life.

Ding ding MB hits it. Poole is an issue right now. Started halfway through the season when he was talking about going pro non stop. Coaching staff became worried. This is the point when offense became totally stagnant and a lot had to do with him being one on one jack up crap shots. Kid has so much ability but needs to listen.

Just look at the comments in the paper by Simpson and Matthews before tournament if you want further proof there was an issue.

Well I won’t be giving you who it’s from and you don’t have to listen to what I’ve posted. Just know it comes directly from inside.

Freep or Detnews article I don’t remember which one on the comments.

Whatever...  If he decides to transfer, more power to him.  If he decides to stay and sort it out, more power to him.  But if you're unwilling to find some link to back up whatever it is you think you're saying, then accept the doubts.

From Detroit Free Press, Simpson, after the B1G Tourney loss - "Do your job and do what you're asked to do.  There's no more time for "my bad's or 50-50 players or (a lack of) hard work."

"If you're not working hard, you're not helping the team.  So get out."

Up to others to determine if this was directed at Poole, specifically, but I would guess that he was definitely in the mix of who this was directed at.

With that said, I am in no way bashing Poole or any other player.  I have no inside knowledge of anything but if you watched the 1st NCAA game it was pretty clear that Poole was in a funk and/or pouting.  I didn't see it after that game, but my guess is that he was taken to task both publicly and privately for his play in the latter part of the season.

I do think he has tremendous talent but his "swagger" will be his undoing if he doesn't recognize that EVERYONE has to keep improving.  I truly hope he comes to grip with that as I would love to see him at Michigan for at least another year, if not more.  I predict that if he transfers or leaves for the NBA that he will regret it, horribly.

And so why would the coaches be worried about a player talking NBA?  You think they haven't dealt with that before?  I doubt Beilein is ever worried about a player that wants to get to the NBA.  He does everything he can to get them there - early, or not...
