Big House BBQ Open Thread

Submitted by MaximusBlue on
BBQ event officially started at 10am. Figured I'd get a thread going where everyone could post updates, tweets, info., comments, etc. regarding the BBQ. With Roseboro, Lewis, and Thompson attending along with a host of commits and prospects, a chance for a couple hello post today seems likely.

No, but pretty close. All but two of our commits is a 4*, and one of them is a kicker. Hoke has silently done an amazing job with this class considering the 7-6 season.

I don't understand the people who are saying that recruiting has been lacking.  This class is just smaller.  The average stars of our recruits is as high as anyone - literally anyone, including Alabama.

Unless they are referring to the couple of guys who looked to bean leaning toward M and going elsewhere, in which case I will tell them that that has always happened, and always will happen, regardless of the coach/team performance.  That's just how recruiting works sometimes.

TING!!  You got it.

Because our class size is small and we missed out on some big players/had some early comitts flip away from us, there has been a convenient notion that recruiting has fallen off a cliff.

The services ranked us lower bacause of the small class size, because that is what they do; and the fan base focused on the guys we lost instead of the guys we got, because that is what they do.

In the meantime, we have been quietly picking up four-star after four-star with nobody noticing.  In a couple of years, there won't be any three-stars left on the team.

Yes on 1 service its the 3rd best average star rating (that includes a kicker in a small class dragging it down) and on a 2nd service its the 5th best.  So the folksy charm offensive continues to work.  In light of on field results for 2 years the recruiting has been very very good.

I really think the failure of 2012 has been overblown. We were unfortunate enough to play the top three teams in the AP that year, and had an ugly loss to ranked Nebraska when our star QB went down. We showed in the bowl game that we were a legitimately good team. In my eyes, Hoke has had one bad season, but maaaan it was bad ugly.

That's... actually really an accurate perspective, I think.  The way we lost agains ND, Nebraska, and OSU that year was really aggravating.  The one-dimensional "Do somethind please, Denard" offense really set us back in those games.  The SC game was a good game and a good performance through and through, although it would have been interesting to see how JT Floyd would have helped our secondary in the key moments of that game.  The Bama loss was.. well, we just were as good of a team as they were, and it showed.

#1. Somewhat miraculous

#2. Somewhat disappointing(but understandable)

and #3. Disappointing(but understandable)

The rise of sparty makes you want to be all reactionary and call #3 embarrassing, but it is what it is.  I miss Andrew Maxwell.

Just fyi - MSU peeps think Thompson is going to the BBQ just to fulfill a promise to dad, and will be committing to MSU.  I don't know what "soon" means when he said he will committ soon but just fyi.  No idea if its just message board fluff but that's what their side is saying.

Yes but the other players were general positive feelings.  This is very specific information - in fact a few believe he will head to EL and commit today after the BBQ.  We'll see - just throwing it out there.  I am just cautioning people because he said he would commit soon and it intersects with the BBQ that a lot of people suddenly think he is a major lean for us.

Not that I know anything, but my best guess is along these lines.  The story with him has been that he prefers MSU but his dad wants him to wait on making a decision.  Now we hear that his dad is letting him commit earlier than expected and he's suddenly ready to announce.  That sounds to me like a tell Hoke no in person / give Michigan one last chance kind of deal, but I could be wrong.

Honestly, he's one of those guys that I'd be happy if we get him and fine if we don't.

I am NOT putting words in turd's mouth but perhaps he said that because Thompson is a lower level recruit.  I think the attitude by some is if Thompson was not a legacy he'd really not be a target based on his rating.  If I am wrong feel free to say so turd.  ;)

KBLOW's right about what's a good attitude to have in general, and you're right that I was being a little more specific to Thompson with this.  I don't know about the legacy thing.  I obviously won't be suicidal if Roseboro goes to NC State, but that would feel like a recruiting loss to me in a way that missing on Thompson might not.

Again, though, I'll be pleased if Thompson chooses Michigan, so this really isn't me saying that I don't want him.

I'm fine with defining "lower level recruit" as 3 stars and below.  But be careful; Alabama has four 3 star recruits verbaled for 2015, two of them from out of state.

Better than star ratings is the list of offers a kid has.  Besides MSU and UM, Thompson's been offered by Nebraska and Wisconsin, which does give his profile a bit more credibility.  Given the caliber LB (star ratings and size) that have committed to UM recently, Thompson on paper right now looks like a depth guy behind some of the bigger LBs UM has targeted and seems bent on continuing to go after.
