Big Chill at 60,000 and Counting

As a bit of perspective, we have exceeded the attendance of the Camp Randall game in ticket sales WITHOUT SELLING ANY TICKETS TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC! Record, here we come!

WOOOOOO! It sucks that I won't be able to make it, and be a part of this historic event, but I will definitely be attending the first ever night game at Michigan Stadium, so there's that. This is going to be amazing. I hope the weather is beautiful, for December at least, and the home fans are able to see a big Michigan, check that, Meeeeechigan victory over Sparty.

I'm beginning to get concerned about this advertising. Advertising in the Big House for spring practice and the Big Chill is a slippery slope. Just because there's money to be made doesn't mean it's worth breaking this tradition. I know David Brandon is a savvy businessman and he's looking to increase revenues, but they need to be careful about this. We were supposed to be able to afford the stadium expansion without corporate advertising, or at least that's what was said when the idea was sold. The other item of note from that press release I see is that a website is going to be launched tomorrow featuring "Victor the talking puck".

Didn't most of that PNC money, if not all, go to Mott? Can't fault anyone for that. I'd sacrifice my core-Michigan-Game-Day values if someone wanted to put a banner in Michigan Stadium and give money to Mott. There's not such thing as too much of that.

If the purpose of advertising during football games is to donate to Mott, I'd be OK with it even during the season, and by that measure advertising during the spring game to donate is something I can support too. I just see this and the expected Big Chill ads as the first step towards advertising in the Big House for football games to provide revenue for the program, not for donations. If they only stick to advertising for donations or for negative revenue events like the spring game or the Big Chill, then they're doing everything right. We'll just have to see how many seasons it is before we have "Allstate" on the field goal netting and an Arby's logo next to the block M on the scoreboard.

The writing is on the wall. If Bill Martin almost sold the naming rights to the UM/OSU game then anything is possible - especially with an AD who is focused on growing and improving our sports teams. The fact that they put ads in the stadium for the spring game breaks sends a strong signal. I would be shocked if there weren't ads in the Big House for the Big Chill - after all Michigan does sell ads for all other sports other than football. Even though I prefer no ads, as long as the money goes to support strong sports programs I guess I can live with it.

For Michigan football games, I'm completely opposed to any advertising within the stadium. However, ads are necessary at the "Big Chill" if they want to keep ticket prices low enough to set the attendance record. I'm sure they will only have the ones on the boards anyways.

We are almost definitely going to break the attendance record (for those of you who don't know, the record is 74,554, set at the Cold War game between Michigan and MSU at Spartan Stadium).

it looking like a hockey arena. Strategically on the scoreboards. Maybe the fieldgoal netting. I have no problem with it. As long as they promise to use the money to stabilize ticket prices.

We haven't exceeded the attendance of anything until people actually show up. Thanks for the news, though--the huge ticket sales so far are pretty awesome--I'm excited to log in at 8:30 tomorrow morning and get mine!

And there's going to be a website for the Big Chill featuring "Victor the Talking Puck"? I think I'm more concerned about that than about advertising during the hockey game--a talking puck sounds pretty embarrassing.

Wow, I thought getting 2 tickets would be a breeze. Time to make sure my refresh button works. This WILL be my first Big House experience dammit.
