Beth Mowins to do play by play Saturday.

With Joey Galloway on color, who I don't recall hearing before. A shame IMO, this confirms me wanting to listen to the radio feed.

[Ed-Ace: I changed the thread title, as Beth Mowins is in my opinion a solid announcer—especially for a noon game on ESPN2—and the immediate parallel drawn to Pam Ward, a far inferior play-by-play announcer, is potentially rooted in something I'm not comfortable seeing on this blog.

Joey Galloway as the color commentator should probably be your biggest concern here. Leaving the rest of the thread up unchanged since it at least contains some pertinent information.]

I'm disappointed not because she's a woman. It's because she's an uninteresting play by play announcer IMHO. She doesn't add anything to my experience of watching games especially on the big plays.

Granted, it has everything to do with emotional investment, but I find that I really don't pay very much attention to voices and instead much more to the information (if any) being relayed if it is Michigan and I am watching on TV rather than being at the game. Watching the many other games that I might on a Saturday, I find myself noticing who and the quality of the call a lot more. To that end and to speak to the OP's original content, from a live broadcasting standpoint, I find Mowins better than Ward at this.

and Michigan is still trying to find two announcers that can fill the roll he did solo.  Try as they might, and Dierdorf and Brandstatter may do very well, there has been nobody yet that can so well paint a Michigan football Saturday in the same comforting hues of homerism as Bob Ufer.

"Johnny  Wangler to Anthony Carter will be heard until another 100 years of Michigan football is played."                                                                                                                                      Tried to post youtube link but failed. If his call doesn't put a chill up & down your Maize & Blue spine you need to check your pulse.

I'll feel guilty if I don't at least say something, here. I know the original comment may not have been intended that way, but I'm not particularly comfortable with the sexist tenor of this thread. I will fully admit that Pam Ward is annoying to listen to, but as far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a good reason to call out Beth Mowins for the call individually.

And in that she has a terrible voice for play-by-play.

And in that, as as mediocre sideline reporter who was doing games on ESPNU she has no natural talent for smoothly and pleasantly narrating things.  Or for adding excitement to accentuate the game's best moments.  Although in that regard, she's the same as the majority of the play-by-play announcers that ESPN has annointed in the past 15 years.  I have been bitching about ESPN's announcer selections for about a decade now so this is nothing new for me.
