His Dudeness

Langford isn't happening. He isn't happy about Michigan taking Battle over him. Cumberland is our best option at this point. Battle kind of screwed us over a bit, but whatever.

Yeah.  That was my thinking.  That recruitment felt like on of those situations where the kid goes to UK/Duke right before signing day despite pledging high interest in UM all along.  I trust Beilein can win with the kids he wants, and doggedly chasing a 1-year kid who had months to commit seems like a waste of resources.

HIs football stuff is better than his basketball stuff IMO. I wouldn't say he is full of it. I am just relaying what is on the rivals board. They are saying we have nearly 0% chance at Langford.

Langford may not happen, but I kinda doubt it's because Michigan took a commit from another player.  I mean, the guy is looking at MSU, Duke, and UK - not exactly schools that don't recruit other kids.

Cumberland would be a nice pickup, but I like to think most of these decisions at the top-100 level are made largely independently of what the school did with other recruits.  If you are that good, you don't care much about competition and what schools did with other kids.

Sam said Michigan has stayed in contact throughout.  This other guy jumped the spot.  Like you said, we did not choose Battle over him.

He was a heavy lean for us.  I think Langford is assessing options, and we might just have to wait.

Uhh, Langford is better by quite a bit. That being said, Langford is an elite talent and it shouldn't discount the fact that Cumberland is still a very nice player. I'd be surprised if Langford wasn't a 1-and-done, so it may be better long-term to get a guy like Cumberland who appears to be a 4-year player.

Yeah.  I think the argument should be if a 3rd-year Cumberland is better than a 1st-year Langford.  I agree Langford is the better player right now, but his value drops a bit if he's a solid-if-inconsistent freshman and then in the NBA while Cumberland is a solid 2/3-year provider on the team in college.

If you can say "they are almost guaranteed a final four appearance" then I can say "they are almost guaranteed to be playing pro ball in Turkey."

I would take money and the NBA, over getting mollywhopped in the final four and my head coach blaming me for it every day of the week.

Lol. What an awesome sell that is. "Hey kids, come to MSU so you can not live up to your potential and when everything clicks with you and all the other highly rated players, you can get your ass handed to you by Duke and Kansas. But hey, you can be the 4th best team in a single-elimination tournament one time every 4 years. Come to MSU!"

I'm sure the beating they got at the hands of Duke this year really drove home the point that MSU was a place where you could compete for titles and not, say, stumble through a weak NCAA draw.

MSU can tout the final four trips as much as they want, but this isn't the early-00's when MSU consistently produced top-notch squads.  If you check out their more recent history, it's basically once every 4-5 years that they have a competitive squad and then a bunch of so-so outfits.  It's obviously still impressive, but it's not like they are a truly elite squad most years.

Yeah.  I think people envision all 1-and-done kids as being like Carmelo, Durant, etc. and just dominate in college, but that isn't really the case.  Hell, Blake Griffin was a highly-regarded guy who took 2 years to really get going.  And with the salary bumps in the NBA coming with the new TV deal, it behooves kids to get into the NBA as soon as possible so that even if their first contract isn't huge, their next one will be.  So while it absolutely sucks to lose out on elite prospects, the way the college and pro games are set up, I'm not sure unless you are a UK/Duke-type team you get a huge benefit out of one-year players with talented-but-immature games.

I seem to remember good things happening the last time we took a player from Ohio who Thad Matta didn't offer:

Credit JB for having some nice plan B and C options but it's been awhile since we signed a plan A type kid. Let's hope they move on from Battle without missing a beat.

The good thing about losing a top bball recruit is they would only be here for one year anyway but yeah this is getting beyond frustrating with kids using us as a placeholder then committing to duke syracuse Kansas kentucky etc. We should have gotten one of Thornton Booker Brown etc. All we can do is go out and win and put people in the nba and it still doesn't seem to be enough.

As much as it sucks to say, get used to it. Barring the occasional, once in a few years coups like McGary, Michigan is going to lose recruiting battles to the likes of Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, and UNC more often than not. That's just how basketball recruiting operates, unfortunately. The blue books get their pick of the litter, and everyone else fights for what's left.
