All of the Polls that are Not Coaches or AP Poll Thread

Submitted by alum96 on

Based on last week it looks like we are going to try to limit it to 3 threads a Sunday on this topic.  (well until playoff rankings are released)

  1. AP
  2. Coaches
  3. Every other damn one

So this can serve as #3.

UPDATED SUNDAY:

Sagarin #3: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/sagarin/

Massey #11: http://www.masseyratings.com/rate.php?s=cf&sub=FBS

ESPN FPI #15: http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/teamratings

================================

Just wanted to note after a crazy top 10 last week where about half lost only 1 lost this week (Oklahoma) with Utah in a dog fight at home in the 4th.  Ironically Oklahoma was the #1 team in the Massey rankings which supposedly compiles all the other rankings together.

Based on general inertia of voters UM should move behind FSU (where NW was last week) which would be #12 this week with Oklahoma falling below UM.  Even if Utah ends up losing wouldn't make much sense to put them behind UM at this point based on head to head and beating weak ass Oregon so 12ish seems correct.  On UM's side is we were involved in the only game this week featuring 2 top 25 teams... a strange quirk.   But at 12 we'd be the 2nd highest 1 loss team in the country after Bama so that seems reasonable.

So an "inertia" top 15:

  1. OSU
  2. TCU
  3. Baylor
  4. MSU (haha)
  5. Utah pending win (if not drop to #11)
  6. Clemson
  7. LSU
  8. Bama
  9. A&M
  10. UF
  11. FSU
  12. UM
  13. Ole Miss
  14. ND
  15. Stanford

Goodbye - Oklahoma, NW.

If Cal upsets Utah then UM is prob #13 with Cal ahead of us.

Ok State, Iowa would be the 2 P5 unbeatens that voters could  move ahead of Stanford ND types but doubtful.  In theory MSU should drop but since they didnt lose tonight they might as well be ranked high even if a fraud so our win looks even better next week.

osu will remain #1 by a slim margin over Baylor, who moves up to #2. I think TCU falls to #4 after nearly dropping one to K-State, Utah moves up to #3, msu drops to #5 after struggling against Rutgers.

Why should Baylor be first? Was it the impressive win over SMU? Or maybe the win over powerhouse Rice? That doesnt do it for you? Well how about the win over unranked TTU? Or the thumping they laid on that scary Kansas team?

Fuck Baylor, they are frauds and will be proven to be once they play someone with a pulse. Same goes for TCU.

It's weird but I waited so long. You're back. You are here now, as you were before but lacking an unknown. I did too. Let's shine bright.

...maybe even 12.

beat MSU and we're in the Top 10 and in the playoff contention...and the hype for UM/OSU wuill be on overdrive...its' been awhile (2007, in fact) since ABC had a UM/OSU game with so much potentially on the line.

We play #4 in a week.  They are coming to our city and I have to work so will try the turn off phone and ignore everything and watch the game when I get home...... To the people that have tried this in the past, can you tell me your success stories????

Keep phone off and dont wear your M gear or people will see it and want to bring up the game. Son is a 2 sport kid.. we got soccer in morning and hoops in the afternoon.. keep my head in the sand and i DVR when i get home. Never check the score.. that takes so much away from the watching experience. That said I'm gonna be watching live this week! Go Blue!

There is only one reason MSU has looked average the last few weeks. MSU prepares for Michigan every practice, and I believe they have overlooked Rutgers and Purdue, focused on preparing for our Wolverines. I see a lot of fans laughing at MSU and acting as if we have already won. I caution you bc MSU still has our number until proven otherwise.

I think you are fooling yourself if you think harbaugh has not paid any attention to msu yet either. Also, I don't recall msu having harbaughs number. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that previous seasons results aren't necessary. I think it will be our toughest challenge so far but I think this is a little bit negative of a perspective.

I don't think that is the only reason they looked bad the past few weeks, but I will agree that they plan this game out far in advance and are a bit obsessive about us. It probably does sap some of the focus from their earlier games. We cannot take this game lightly at all.

Whatever. MSU has bullied the former Michigan but they have never seen this team. I don't think you or I have seen half of what this offense is. Prepare for changes and surprises next week. If we even need them. Cook hasn't faced one good defense this year yet alone a secondary like this. He will be broken down from the get go. This isn't 2009.

Ok well what about the first four weeks when they didn't look all that great either? They nearly lost to 3-3 Oregon team. Got out gained by air force and let them hang around. Western hung around all game and even central was within a score early in the 4th. Msu is not that good this year. That doesn't mean Michigan will win but there's no reason to fear them.

would be over ranked at 2 and 4.

Utah and Clemson under ranked at 5 and 6.

But that is probably due to the intertia/stickiness way that the human polls work.  Highly path dependent.

On the other hand, might not me so affected by inertia this week.  I would not be surprised if Utah and Clemson jump MSU, and possibly even TCU.

Relatively high parity this year, as the gap from the top down to no. 15 Stanford is not that big.

In other news, Boston College remains no. 1 in average yards allowed (defense), with a 0-3 loss to Wake Forest.

Maybe if Durkin leaves Harbaugh could take a look at whoever is the BC DC.

Houston is 5-0.  Maybe after Harbaugh drums Meyer out of Columbus, OSU can bring back Tom Herman.

I think A&M is not getting proper love either due to being a fraud on defense all these years but they have Chavis now.  Still I assume they lose a few games but they have some decent wins now that ASU is not a fraud.  Better resume than a Baylor.

Waiting on the S&P+ which should be out later today and FEI tomorrow.

3 notes for the OP:

1. We may be able to avoid more redundant threads on rankings if your OP title is a little more informative (example: Week 7 Polls and Ratings or 10/11 Polls and Ratings Thread

2. It would also be helpful if you updated your OP with some of the actual ratings.

3. You are citing the Massey Composite Rating which is pretty much garbage. His composite won't be updated until later in the week when all the other ratings have been tabulated. I have linked Massey's actual personal ratings above.

But thanks for starting this thread because I also hate a new thread for every poll and rating under the sun.

I will update the OP but not with S&P+ combined. It had multiple 2 win teams in the top 20 last week and I dont understand its logic at all.  I think S&P and FEI should be used to look at units (offense or defense) in relation to other units of other teams.  But the combined measure seems wacky.

S&P+ ratings just phased all preseason projections out of their formula after Week 5, and that led to some of the craziness. I think their ratings (and most ratings) are going to be a little volatile with small sample sizes of 5 games. Different personnel and conditions can cause unique matchups and situations for teams that sometimes can't be quantified even after a full season let alone 5 games. I think it is still worth looking at them though. FEI phases out preseason projections after Week 7 I believe.

But their unit rankings (offense v defense) are making sense.  The combined one is wacky still.  I havent really looked at the combined prior to this year so I'll take a closer look at it as the year goes by.  S&P used the first 5 weeks of data as of last week (and nothing from prior year) but still had 2 win Louisville over a team like Utah.  Just doesnt seem logical.  And as much as I like UM I am not sure why we're 3 in the combined rating with the 53rd offense and 3rd defense combination.

Like I said - wacky.  I like those 2 measures for one side of the ball much more.
