The variant part is speculation (possibly my misinterpretation) based on several tweets fwiw

I received an email from the Washtenaw County Health Department earlier today about possible exposures at Meijer and Briarwood Mall. The pertinent portion is below. The cases have their genesis from someone traveling from the UK. Heaven help us...this is not new news. Why is anyone allowed into the US from the UK without 14 days of mandatory quarantine and testing.
COVID-19 Variant in Washtenaw County:
Testing Encouraged (1/23 Update)
Cases of the COVID-19 variant B117 have been identified in Washtenaw County. A total of 5 cases of the variant have been identified and additional sequencing continues for other possible cases already positive for COVID-19.
Washtenaw County Health Department is now aware of a possible public exposure. Brief, public exposures are not normally a COVID-19 exposure concern but the B117 variant is more easily transmitted and could lead to more cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
As a precaution, the Health Department recommends immediate COVID-19 testing for anyone in the following locations at the specific times provided:
- Sun, Jan 17 at the Meijer on Ann Arbor Saline Rd., Ann Arbor MI from 9:00 to 10:00 am
- Sun, Jan 17 Briarwood Mall, 100 Briarwood Circle, Ann Arbor MI from 1:00 to 2:00 pm
Everyone should be aware of this new variant and limit any possible exposures to COVID-19. This includes not gathering with people outside of your household and limiting more risky behaviors where social distancing and wearing masks cannot be consistently done. Anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19, has been recently exposed, or who has recently traveled to a place where a new variant is circulating should be tested.

Yay New President! He let other nations kill us!?
January 23rd, 2021 at 11:08 PM ^
Presumably you do not realize the irony of this statement as days before leaving office the previous president tried to lift the travel ban.
January 23rd, 2021 at 11:09 PM ^
"jcrouchSAV", you've just been banned!
January 23rd, 2021 at 11:34 PM ^

How has this account not been banned his entire posting history is inflammatory garbage.
Nice non sequitur guy.

It's been posted in its current wording since 2009:
UNWELCOME, KTHX:
Politics
Drew Sharp, Ace Williams, Mike Valenti.
Saying stupid and/or false things about Michigan in order to get Michigan fans upset is a tried and true way to phish for clicks. Let's not feed the trolls.
Bewbs/Objectification of women. Whatever misogynistic "standard guy stuff" gets tolerated on other sports sites you visit will NOT fly here.

yeah, is this a brother of one of the mods who is "special" and mom always asked to look out for him?
January 24th, 2021 at 4:56 AM ^
Or he brought politics up as well as it being inaccurate and misleading information... but sure. Let’s go with “we didn’t like what he said” so he got banned. Whatever makes you sleep better at night.

I see..its perfectly fine to blameTrump for Covid and deaths but not Biden? 12000 ppl have died since Biden took over..whays good for the goose is good for the gander
January 24th, 2021 at 7:47 AM ^
I bet those weren't "real" covid deaths though, right? Like your sister-wife's cousin's neighbor's friend who was disemboweled when the marlin they were catching jumped into the boat and the death was blamed on covid.
January 24th, 2021 at 8:46 AM ^
I know this topic fires people up, but the cause of death stories are not some farce. My opinion is based on two firsthand accounts--my boss's mother (nothing to do with the health industry) and the other, a lifelong friend that is an executive in the Methodist Hospital system.
My boss's mom was sick with a poor outlook even before COVID was a thing. Shortly after she passed, even though my boss was never explained it had anything to do with COVID, or that she even had contracted it, the reports and the death certificate explained it was COVID, and not the slew of other problems.
As for the executive at Methodist, while it wasn't happening everywhere (and not at Methodist at all), she said there were some hospitals marking deaths as COVID when deaths didn't have anything to do with it. In today's world that spreads like wildfire, which is why we all saw it.
So easy taking an insensitive jab at someone who is pointing out the hypocrisy we are all witnessing by our officials right now. Last administration is wrong, shut the economy down, no schools, stay indoors. New administration incoming and we hear standards were wrong and will be adjusted because the old way showed too many positives (per WHO), and the loudest opponents are now all saying to open the economy back up, start schools, the people deserve a chance, all while we have this new, more deadly and more contagious variant flaring up. Seems pretty clear to most people what has been going on.
January 24th, 2021 at 9:20 AM ^
Anecdotes of mistakes is not evidence of a conspiracy.
January 24th, 2021 at 9:58 AM ^
You’re leaving out bits and pieces to fit the picture you’re trying to paint. The previous administration was wrong not because they “shut the economy down, schools closed...” it’s because they did it begrudgingly, and then also turned the few things we had some confidence in helping to combat the spread (masks, distancing) into a political fight.
The over simplified way of explaining Covid deaths to a lay person:
if you and I are both running from a bear, and I previously had my left leg amputated, when the bear catches me and kills me, is the death reported as “leg amputation”? No. It’s “a f*in’ bear ate him”.
Go Blue, Stay safe!
Edited to add: If you look closely, most often deaths are often explained in the way that would satisfy more people. Ex.: Pt died of Pneumonia, secondary to end stage congestive heart failure, or, Pt died of COVID, secondary to uncontrolled diabetes and morbid obesity. Whereas, yes, many people who have succumbed to COVID had underlying conditions, contracting the virus led to their IMMEDIATE death.
January 24th, 2021 at 2:56 PM ^
I appreciate the points and don't disagree. I was making it clear it was insensitive to make the jab the previous poster did. I know from firsthand experience that the cause of death being listed as Covid in a questionable manner was not entirely fake.
You're absolutely right about co-morbidity and underlying issues. I agree there, too. Unfortunately that family didn't hear one time the mother contracted Covid. You can imagine their surprise when, even though she had only tested negative during her decline, they come to find out the cause of death was listed as Covid.
And, the game shady hospitals were playing was told to me through the eyes of a Houston Methodist executive, one of the nation's best hospitals. He'd know better than me what those shady hospitals were doing.
So I'll stand by my story that it's not right to crack jokes about the fake cases like the "...sister-wife's cousin's neighbor's friend who was disemboweled when the marlin they were catching jumped into the boat and the death was blamed on covid."
And time to start training again, b/c I'm definitely outrunning your ass if a bear is chasing us! Haha!
Go Blue!
January 24th, 2021 at 11:32 AM ^
You can't seriously be this stupid? It's the actions/inactions by the president that is the source of blame, not how many people have died on their watch.
January 24th, 2021 at 12:57 PM ^
Social media is creating a whole cadre of willfully misinformed, entirely ignorant people who are very loud and proud of their aversion to intellectual honesty. I don't even know how to approach this topic anymore. The stupidity is so much deeper than I thought possible.
January 24th, 2021 at 2:45 PM ^
I know Asimov had his own issues, but this quote resonates with our current state:
"Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
January 26th, 2021 at 11:23 AM ^
Of course, but social media has brought this phenomenon to a level I didn't think possible. It's truly epidemic today, and seems to be getting worse.
January 24th, 2021 at 10:11 AM ^
This is the last straw for me. You guys and this site can go fuck it's respective selves.
Manuel and Harbaugh have ruined the football team and now BS COVID knee-jerk responses have ruined a great winter sports season. No reason to pay attention to this shit anymore, and surely not when it involves suffering hypocritical fools like rob f that have allowed left wing politics to run this website for the last year.
I am sure you will ban me. And I am sure you will come out of your parents' basement to tell your wife and your parents how proud you are for being the bigger fascist. Fucking loser.
January 24th, 2021 at 11:03 AM ^
Oh no, how will we ever get along without you?
January 24th, 2021 at 12:59 PM ^
Don't tease me, just go away.
January 24th, 2021 at 1:34 PM ^
One question and one question only:
Did you bother to look both at what "jcrouchSAV" posted and his posting history?
But I'm the "hypocritical fool" engaging in "left wing politics" and also a "bigger fascist" and "fucking loser" for dealing with trying to get folks to follow the MGoBoard rules long ago established by Brian and Seth. And doing it for free when Seth contacted me (not the other way around).
You're pretty much wrong on all counts and I'm not wasting my time any further with you. Do as you wish and leave.

Man, that Ace sure is stoopid. /s
January 23rd, 2021 at 9:55 PM ^
Yeah. How dare Ace question the wisdom of playing a contact sport against a team that just had a player test positive.
Not saying that was the cause of positive in Ann Arbor. But it damn well could have been.
January 23rd, 2021 at 9:58 PM ^
They wouldn’t shut down the entire athletic department because of the basketball team. This is an athletics-wide issue, probably because of the UK strain that’s more contagious and present in Washtenaw County.
Edit: Confirmation from the Daily reporter:
January 23rd, 2021 at 10:13 PM ^
And the UK strain was brought back by a Michigan student-athlete
