2014 Football promotions announced: Night Game will be UTL III

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

If there were any doubts that this year's night game wouldn't be a big production in a UTL format, they are erased now it would seem.

I hope that DB has figured out that thr UTL merchandising / phenomenon ship has sailed. (Haha) It is time we just say that we are having a night game, and quit acting like a 13 year old boy that has kissed another girl and has to act like he has to tell everyone. Meanwhile, the rest of his friends are on third base. Yeah ,yeah, we know, you play at night, call the Cubs, maybe they care.
Don't get me wrong, I was at both UTL'S, and they were awesome, but so were a ton of day games.

UTL and UTL II were fine, but I hope they don't continue this going forward. Night games should become normal in Ann Arbor, not some big event every time they turn the lights on.i'd like to see more than one per year, but none against OSU and MSU.

UTL isn't that big of a thing nationally. Hell the SEC just calls that "a game". Night games are so common going on 10 years now it's probably time to stop thinking ours are anything special.

It's soley for marketing and merchandising.

The same type of shirts they sold in 2011, they sold last year but with a UTL II logo on it.

Merchandising, roman numerals, big productions. Sounds like a, ahem, Super Bowl....

I remember when the Cubs finally put lights up at Wrigley Field. At the time it was a big deal. But after the first game, I don't remember them having a special logo or it even being a big deal.

advertising being brought into Michigan Stadium and injected into the U of M Game-Day Experience, in the form of sponsorships.  In how many not-so-subtle ways will the names "DirecTV" and "Hundai" be emphasized ad nauseum those two games?

We're eerily close, it seems, to a point in the development of this particular era of the Michigan stadium experience, where one of us will see someone dart past us in the stands and then the announcement will state: "This emergency run for additional sliced jalepenos to go with the stadium nachos is brought to you by your Metro Detroit Fifth Third branches and BP with Invigorate"

"11/22 vs Maryland

Senior Day

MMB Halftime Show: "Evolution of Band" "

Wouldn't it be great if the MBB could go all "Stanford Marching Band" on Dave Brandon and show what "Evolution of Band" really stands for (in terms of the screw-job the Michigan Marching Band has endured, as wow-factor RAWK music has crowded them out) ?!!

Sure, there are some great things that the MBB is still allowed to do, but I am sure that I'm just one of many who has gotten fed-up with the MBB being drowned out by the same old tired stadium-anthem stuff (and I'm not talking about just Seven Nation Army, but pretty much all the stuff you hear in practically every NFL stadium and in too many other sports venues).  There have been way too many instances in which the MBB has been several seconds into playing something when the press-box DJ hits the "play" button and drowns them out.

Maybe for that game's halftime show, the MBB could dramatize that by marching into formations while playing several bars of a song only to get interrupted by a deafening stadium anthem as the band scatters and ducks for cover. Then do it over... and over... and over, again and again and again, to make their point.

Enough already, and don't forget to F'N GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!

I see I typed "MMB" correctly the first time, then got it wrong the next 5 opportunities.  A big FAIL for me.   Maybe next time I get up and on MGoBlog at 4:30am I'll have a coffee first.

But thanks anyway for understanding my rant.   One point I forgot to include was that they should also change the title of that day's show to "De-evolution of Band", or maybe "De-evolution of MMB" (there, I finally got it right this time).

they would show their support of the marching band by playing instruments and marching in formations. I was hoping to see them dribble basketballs at the same time. What a let down.

No worries.  I've typed more than a few posts when I was sleep deprived.  Sometimes I look back and am surprised there weren't MORE mistakes in my posts.

Anyway, your points in the post still remain valid, in my eyes anyway.

I was in the band when the piped-in music began. There was some talk of doing a show called "A Tribute to Canned Music." The band would march out, make the formation of a can, then pop the lid off and play all of the terrible songs that got played over and over by the stadium DJ (7 Nation Army and the like).

The worry was that AD funding for away trips and bowl games would coincidentally become unavailable, so it never went beyond informal discussions.

They are going to introduce the new mascot that week.  "Wally the Wolverine".  Quickly to be adopted by State fans as "Wally the Wal-verine" and every variance thereof.  This leads to a mass exodus of true blue fans, which allows the Horseshoe to overtake the Big House in average attendance per game.  Dave Brandon subsequently accepts the invitation to the first ever "Bahamas Bowl" for the barely .500 Wolverines, while Brady Hoke receives a three year contract extension.

We should call it U3 and create an overweight U2 tribute band, "U3". Then, they can play halftime instead of that stupid marching band (which is boring, recruits hate it and is a giant waste of money...besides, they have real bands at the Super Bowl, not some lame marching band). After U3 blows up in "U3 Presented by Charter Bank and Long John Silvers", we can put them on an international tour with Mini Kiss and Lez Zepplin!

Got tix for the Utah game. Been to about a dozen games but haven't really toured the city/university much. We will be arriving friday night and staying till sunday. Obviously Zingerman's is a must but anybody got any other destinations worth visiting while in town?

They play night games all over the country including Columbus and Tuscaloosa but Michigan acts like it's inventing the wheel. This program has no self-awareness and it really would be comical if you're a fan of another program.

Did you go to either of the first two UTLs? They have been productions unlike any night game I have ever been to elsewhere. I think you are being a bit harsh and over-dramatic about this.

This is absolutely ridiculous. DB definitely gets at least a -1 on this one. This is so bad it's almost comical
