Submitted by varney_go_blue on
I'm curious to see what everyone thinks about next year's starters. Any suprises? Tell me if you think I'm wrong, which I am A LOT. OFFENSE ------------- QB - Tate Forcier SB - Vincent Smith X - Darryl Stonum Y - Martavious Odoms Z - Junior Hemingway TE - Kevin Koger LT - Perry Dorrestein LG - Stephen Schilling C - David Molk RG - Patrick Omameh RT - Mark Huyge DEFENSE ------------ DE - Ryan Van Bergen DT - Mike Martin NT - Will Campbell OLB - Craig Roh MLB - Obi Ezeh WLB - Jonas Mouton SLB - Floyd Simmons LCB - Donovan Warren (pending NFL Draft) SS - Troy Woolfolk FS - Mike Williams RCB - J.T. Floyd I may be way off on my predictions but who knows. Besides Turner coming in for Floyd, I don't know where I went wrong. Comments. Changes. etc.

in response to the op... #1) i'm guessing that we go with a leak/tebow-like combination at qb. #2) smith being out for spring ball might give shaw or even toussaint a chance to take the position. #3) there HAS to be a way to get roundtree out there as a starter, probably over hemingway or stonum...if he improves enough as a blocker. #4) LT is going to be a battle. might see omameh move out there. might see lewan/schofield take the job. if its omameh, then theres going to be a lot of competition at right guard as well. #5) Might see Ken Wilkins (at DE) or Obi Ezeh (at Q, with Roh at DE) on passing downs. #6) There's going to be a lot of competition at ILB from Leach, Fitz, Bell, Jones...maybe Demens? #7) doubt simmons starts. probably hawthorne there. maybe kovacs moves down? #8) doubt williams starts at FS. probably robinson or gordon there. #9) if warren leaves, i'm guessing christian beats out floyd.

in response to you, blue adams: (1) I think you're right, but the technical approach to the QB play shouldn't change much as compared to Leak / Tebow. Both QBs should get better at the zone read option, and if they do, Denard would really be the more dangerous option. I'd expect Denard to be used in more variety in 2010 with a year to recall the playbook. (2) I think you're spot on. If a torn ACL, V. Smith may end up redshirting. (3) Perhaps the way to get Tree out there is to deploy a 2-slot formation with Tree and Tay? Those two actually catch the ball, unlike the TEs on occasion this year. (4) LT should be either Omameh or Lewan. Dorrestein would get Tate killed. (6) I wouldn't be shocked if Fitzgerald started in Obi's spot, with Demens as his backup, and with Obi moving to DE. Just try something new with an offseason to prepare for it. (7) Hawthorne or Jones will likely play the S. Brown spot next year. (8) At FS, either M-Robinson or Emilien. (9) I would guess that JT Turner and Woolfolk will be the CBs, with Christian, Floyd, T. Jones, Rogers, Grimes, Talbott and Avery as the backups. Wut? CB Depth? A nickel defense? DB rotation?

I'm not sure why everyone is writing off Mike Williams. Didn't we learn anything with Stevie Brown? He can improve. His problems were mainly mental mistakes. With an off-season of film, he can become a contributor. I think he is the incumbent starter at one of the safety spots. The coaches must see something that they like about him. I personally think Obi and Mouton will also improve with another year in Gerg's system. That's why I think the defense will improve next year despite the critical departures. Just having Williams, Ezeh, and Mouton more comfortable in their roles will do wonders.

Maybe I missed this, but were there any practice reports on his progress once he got in? I see everyone slotting him in as our starting corner (myself included), but are we doing this solely on recruiting accolades or are there coach/bricklayer opinions that we can lean on as well?

...if we see a lot of 0 TE personnel groupings next year. Koger is a weapon, and Webb is a potential stud, too, but we would be dangerous with both Tay and Roundtree on the field at the same time in both slots. The playbook opens up a lot more with two good slots.

I agree - There are definitely a ton of great play possibilities the double slot formation. Tate with a healthy shoulder and a passing formation with Tay, Roundtree, Stonum and Hemingway is pretty damn solid. Does the two-slot formation stress the Defense in different ways than the one slot and 1 TE formation?

With Minor and Brown injured so much Shaw and Smith saw a ton of duty this year, plus the position is stocked with guys like Touissant and Cox, double plus our whole damn offense is based on the run. All of those reasons lead me to believe we will have good RBs and we will use them often.

I think Vince Smith probably won't be the starter at RB because of his injury which concerns me greatly. That leaves Shaw as the probable starter with lots of competition from a host of other guys including freshmen. I kind of like Cox as a dark horse there. I think Roundtree starts ahead of Odoms at slot, but because of our great depth there I think we see a lot of double slot formations with Galleon also getting significant PT. AND/OR Roundtree moves to outside receiver and displaces one of those other two guys. On D how about Kovacs moving down to take Stevie's spot? Don't know if he has the speed to man up on slots though? Then, assuming no Warren the DBs would be Turner, Floyd, Woolfolk and Robinson. Obviously I like this group a lot better with Warren included.

we need Woolfolk and two more, with Kovacs/Williams/Robinson in the box. Would it be asking too much to get 2 solid starters from the following: 1)Turner 2)Emilien 3)Christian 4)Grimes Them plus any Mystery Recruits and the horde of 3 stars (Witty, Avery, Talbott, Johnson, Vinopal, Gordon, Jones, Floyd) means a solid backfield, right? It's linebacker that's lacking in big time recruits, though Furman would go a long way there, since it looks like Fitzgerald is on track inside. There are plenty of 6 foot, 210-220 lbs guys around to replace Stevie Brown on the edge, but I'm still worried about our size there. At DL, I would want to be able to play Campbell if he's ready, so: DE Roh DT Campbell NT Martin DE Van Bergen 4 Star Backups: DE Lalota, Wilkins DT n/a 3 Star: Paskorz, Talbott, Sagesse, Banks, Watson Obviously that kind of non-depth at DT might mean rotating Campbell in, taking advantage of the relative depth at DE and keeping RVB inside. Super young, but it looks like a pretty decent basis for a solid defense in '10 and a good one in '11.

I think we are going to see a number of Freshmen starting or seeing a lot of playing time, especially in the secondary. Unfortunately I see the starting lineup for the defensive secondary changing from week to week with new faces. I also think everyone is playing off JT Floydd. He played okay before he was sick, missed a few weeks from illness, and then when he came back I thought he played pretty well and held down that opposite corner from Warren. Honestly I would rather have guys starting that have game experience than go through what we went through last year. Get the young guys in for a few snaps here and there and possibly have them starting by the end of the year but I'm not comfortable starting a Fr. for the first couple games in the secondary.
