13' LB Jamieon Moss offered

Submitted by UMICH1606 on

According to Sam Webb. He is a Virginia Tech commit.

Commence speculation on why the staff feels they need another LB so bad? Attrition? A realization that a kid or two isn't as good that they thought? It seems that any speculation that McCray or Gedeon may be on the fence has been refuted by multiple recruiting outlets.

I am curious though as to why that they haven't touched base with Levenberry seeming how they have no qualms about trying to take someone else's commit.

I'm wondering if Michigan washed their hands of Levenberry after that sort of public spat between Levenberry's dad and the coaches.  Eric Levenberry publicly announced that his kid would visit Michigan after Michigan's coaches had already said to a bunch of guys "We've got our linebackers, thanks."  Supposedly Michigan had to call him up and say, "We're not interested in your son anymore."  Maybe Hoke doesn't want to go crawling back now that a spot has opened up.

Or maybe they have talked to Levenberry and he's just not interested anymore.

Michigan doesn't want to deal with Levenberry's helicopter dad, and he's only so high on Rivals because he gives the scoop to Farrell. Everyone else has him a borderline top 250 guy. He's not a slam dunk.

As for why: it's not anyone in the current class decommitting, so the only reason they would need more linebackers is...

Levenberry isn't being pursued most likely because of FSU's criminal justice major (or something close to that IIRC) that UM doesn't offer. He's settled down south. It's what you call a bummer.

The spat Magnus is talking about was after EJ committed to FSU, he was supposdly rethinking his decision and wanted to get back in touch with Michigan but then Michigan shot him down (i.e. his college major played a part in the original decision but not the 2nd)

a member of the Pants family.  Tacopants little brother.  Much like the Grady family, the height hits later.  Unlike the Grady family, the height, in this case, was a couple of feet as opposed to a couple of inches.  His senior year highlight film is pretty boring, because all he does is stand in the middle of the field and wait for a pass to be thrown.  I guess when you're 13' and weight about 600lbs, you can stand wherever you wish.

Thats the only reason I can think of and it kind of makes since. He displayed great technique and athleticism this season. The plays me made behind the line remind me of Victor Hopson and Dhani Jones. If i was a pro scout id be chomping at the bits to draft Ryan in the 2nd or 3rd round!

I think he might be on to something here. I would be astonished if Ryan left after this year, but wouldn't be surprised if Ryan left after next given the progress he's making. Maybe the coaches think it'd be smart to get a '13 guy, redshirt him, and have him ready to play if Ryan leaves after next season.

I just don't see this as making sense.  Going into next year, Jake Ryan is a junior and Cam Gordon is a senior.  The coaches should already have a plan in place to replace Ryan, whether it's McCray, Jenkins-Stone, etc.  I don't see them offering somebody at the end of November to replace Jake Ryan unless something else is happening - a departure, an injury, etc.

Yeah, Ringer's hurt.  I haven't heard anything about him transferring or anything, but it wouldn't be totally out of the question to see classmates James Ross and Joe Bolden getting on the field and then to re-think your chances of getting on the field.

Again, I'm not saying that's what he is or should be thinking.  It's just that he might be blocked from PT for the next three years, and maybe somebody in that type of spot would think twice.  Poole might be in the same boat, though he's a year older than Ringer/Ross/Bolden.

Ringer has refuted anything about transferring when randos ask him on twitter, FWIW.

Not replying to you necessarily, I do find this whole tea leaf reading to be getting ridiculous everytime we offer somebody. Each new offer is like a crime scene and everyone on the case is a junior detective.

Definitely curious on the reason for the offer but how about this guy's film? Pretty impressive highlights for being a low 3star...not sure on quality of competition though

A smallish OLB good at pursuing outside runs. Too small to be a rush end, but ESPN isn't listing any coverage skills either... sounds like a special teams ace to me. This isn't a preferred walk-on offer, because he's a NC kid already with a VT scholarship offer. Might this have something to do with Urban Meyer? The only way this makes sense is Greg Mattison wants to use him as a spy on Braxton Miller(and all those mobile QBs who'll take his place). He does seem to do a good job tracking down mobile QBs in his highlights. In fact, that's all he does.

Sorry to go off topic but I know some expressions are said improper on here as a joke because I saw the "joke".(FTR I don't think redundant smartass comments necessarily qualifies as jokes) But I also see people say "doesn't make since" instead of sense and intensive purposes instead of intents and purposes. Are these "jokes"?

but it's clear that Morgan has missed 3-4 games with concussion issues and Poole has a significant injury with an unknown future.  Staff is protecting future depth at a core position for Mattison.

I would guess that this is the case, of course we can only speculate.   There are a number of reasons why they'd start going after LB's late like this, but concussion concerns are certainly one reason.

Unfortunately we'll only know if Morgan is ok until the bowl game.  If he isn't dressed for that one, we'll know why Michigan started looking around for an LB at this late stage; unfortunately.

1. Jake is 3rd yr (NFL eligible), Jones and Cam will be 5th year, Poole & Ringer are hurt, and any player might have new academic issues. Many options for 1 new slot opening. Shouldn't one of the new offerees be able/willing to answer why the coaches are re-opening LB recruitment? 2. What is the Reschke status? Apologies if I missed his post-season response as he alluded to last week.

1. The coaches might not necessarily tell kids why they're recruiting someone new.  Personally, I don't foresee Mike Jones returning for a fifth year, but that's just an assumption on my part.  However, the coaches are already counting on some attrition, so I would imagine something like that is figured in to how many people they're trying to get (25) as opposed to how many seniors are graduating.

2. Reschke has re-affirmed his commitment to Michigan State.

IMHO, Moss has a ton of upside with his frame, athleticism and range. He also shows very good read-react tendacies and patience with flow and containment. Quickness appears a little above average (knowing the competition would help) and he tracks QBs extremely well. Biggest concern: He seems to attack the last few steps of tackling, but he hand tackles ever time and does not tackle with a strong base or "nose to the ball". Typically indicates a competitive kid who is missing a mean streak or a program that doesn't emphasize hitting. Fixable.

So I'm not sure why we're trying to get in with an extra linebacker so late in the game in this class. A firm handshake aside, we have good depth with 6 returning (healthy) LBs plus 2 injured ones, and 2 incoming freshmen. One more 11th hour LB likely wont make much of an impact in 2013 over 2 other top freshmen, and 2 or maybe 1 coming off of an injury. Can't it just wait until next year when we can land a top prospect, or is this kid alot better than I'm seeing?
