'Mr. Third Base' Quantified

Ahoy folks!

If you could represent 'born on third base' graphically, what would that look like? This tweet gives us one answer:

Mr. Third Base is apparently THE most Mr. Third Base in college football.

With the recruiting issue, the hiring of Shemy Schembechler, the failure to properly instruct or oversee the efforts of Colin Stalions and Chris Partridge ... WTF is going on in that athletic department? It's clear that someone needs to manage the non-coaching elements of the football program, so that Harbaugh can focus on the coaching without having to continue to serve suspensions for things he himself didn't do.

I'm not in the Fire Warde! camp. Indeed, I think it's quite possible he's been doing a wonderful job behind the scenes. We didn't, for instance, have victories taken from us or be declared ineligible for the postseason, even though both were at least in principle possible. And who knows — maybe that's because of Warde. Who knows? But someone has to step up and end this constant shooting of ourselves in the foot. And Warde, the buck stops with you on this. No more of this nonsense, please.

I think in this way the chart misidentifies the analogy. It sorts by team and then sub-categorizes by coach. It should sort by coach and only look at where they began as a head coach. San Diego isn't 2nd base.

Ryan Day wasn't even a full-time OC at Ohio State when Meyer abruptly left him as the HC. I'm pretty sure the only reason he got it was because Kevin Wilson still had the stench of scandal on him. Despite the fact they're undefeated, I bet their fans would be much happier with Schiano right now. At least he's not a pusillanimous crybaby.

Jim Harbaugh intentionally started at the minors and worked his way up. He could have used his connections to skip ahead—and no one would blame him given his experience in the NFL—but he took losing teams and turned them into winners every step of the way.

Man I just don’t see Ryan day and osu losing to us without Jim. Jim coaches circles around day. Those fuckers really got what they wanted.

I feel that has always been the case with OSU.  They are just always good.  Even when they "suck" they almost beat Georgia in the cfp.

I hate that we are the ones embroiled in a scandal and not them.  That being said, they did weather scandals from Tressel and Meyer and didn't miss a damn beat.

Why?  Why can't they suffer?

It’s been that way for at least 60 years!  They’ve never been terrible. Their worst season was the Fickell year, and I think cooper went 4-7 one year in his first year or something. But never more than one year without a winning record. And never have they wandered around being mediocre for any sustained period. Hell, just 3 consecutive years of being 9-3…could you imagine what that fan base would do?  Holy shit they’d lose their minds!

A few observations:

  • Lance Leipold, Jonathan Smith, Mike Elko, and Jedd Fisch have definitely done a lot with a little.
  • You definitely also have to give a nod to what Chris Klieman (KSU) and David Braun have accomplished thus far.
  • Given where Illinois started, last year was incredibly impressive. This year makes more sense.
  • Jimbo Fisher sure knows how to F-U a program
  • Also lol at Lincoln Riley.
  • Man, FSU really tanked under Willy Taggart...
