We're so close.

I don't know if you've noticed, I know it snuck up on me, but the Michigan football season is only nine days away. Nine days isn't that long, but it depends on how you look at it I suppose. Using simple math, Usain Bolt could run approximately 9,000 kilometers in that amount of time (neglecting fatigue). Maybe ten days is an eternity.

It seems there must be a single word in the English language that completely describes the feeling in my, and every other Michigan fan's gut leading up to this first gameday of the 2009 season, but maybe not. If it does exist, it could be found by way of triangulation from the words anticipation, desperation, and ecstasy. I'm sure Horatio Caine could run that through some sort of futuristic literary tracking system and come up with the term.

This season isn't like the others I've experienced though. While I've been a fan since the first time I watched my normally reserved father scream like a little girl after a touchdown in our basement, dancing as well as any pale skinny dutch man can, it has never meant as much to me as it does this time around. The Wolverine faithful have been forced into the undesirable position of being apologists for a team that most love to hate. There has been conflict. Fans argue with other fans. Boos still echo within the Big House, rattling restlessly among the bleachers. Michigan has been brought to a knee, and now it gazes at us with a proposal.

All that is asked of us is our undying commitment. We are not asked to follow blindly and unquestioningly, but we must be patient.

I haven't decided where I'll be next Saturday yet. If some ticket options pan out I may be sitting on a bleacher seat in the Big House, otherwise I may watch the game with family, or by myself. Wherever I am, I'll be nervous. My knees will bounce, and my teeth will serve as an interim nail-clipper. I'll be silent, mostly. Breaths will be short and seldom, and I wouldn't have it any other way. I will cheer in the same way I have always cheered: without words, except for the occasional "GO GO GO GO GO!" (I'm a Wolverine Shia LeBouf, obviously...) Beyond that, it's all going to be guttural noises signifying disgust and yelps of pleasure, sprinkled with a (hopefully more than) occasional joyful scream.

I wouldn't have it any other way. Each and every week during the season, we collectively remove our hearts and offer them to the team for protection. Occasionally they are dropped and trodden over, but we do not pull them back to ourselves even in the event of cardiac arrest because we know there will always be one play, one moment, one image that will rub the paddles together and scream "CLEAR!" bringing our pulse back in a single adrenaline fueled instant.

So stand by me Michigan fans, and bravely sing The Victors in the face of our adversaries. More importantly, stand by our team, as they attempt to bring back what we have all fallen in love with using only their bare hands and fatigued bodies. Join me as I pound the air with my fist, proclaiming on behalf of these players, the keepers of our dreams, "HAIL! HAIL! To Michigan, the Leaders and the Best."

I'll be 40 rows up on the 25 yard line. Screaming my lungs out. I hope it's so loud in there and we get up on them early. If that happens the momentum could take us a long way with these guys.

I am the eternal optomist, but I think that with just a smidge, yes smidge, of progress, this team could roll. They are so young they won't know any better. I may not sleep next Friday night. This season is by far more anticipated than last for some reason.

Are you kidding? This is the most anticipation I've ever felt for a season in my 20+ years of being a Michigan fan. It's strange to feel so uncertain about a Michigan football team going into the season, but it's also refreshing and exhilarating. I feel, oddly, some of the sensation I did the first time I walked into Michigan Stadium that sunny fall day my freshman year. This is new territory. Enjoy it, because it will be a long, long time (if ever) that we feel this way again. I can hardly wait. GO BLUE!

That's been my theme heading into this season. Young guys who won't want to spend any time thinking about last year, and they're just out to prove themselves. I's really weird to be heading into a second consecutive season with so many question marks and not knowing what to expect. Fortunately I have put off a lot of season-ending work around my cave and have plently of other things to get done, so time will fly. But I'm with you on not sleeping. A chat feature would be nice so there could be a Friday night Scotch 'n Soda MGoAllNight online party heading into the game. Of course, I'd probably pass out ten minutes before kick off and miss the game, but what the hell!

"I'm sure Horatio Caine could run that through some sort of futuristic literary tracking system and come up with the term." If this is the most exciting season of their lives....[removes sunglasses]...then why are they starting....DEATH? [cue music] YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

I got inordinately excited the other day when I realized we were close enough to game day that I could check the 10-day forecast for next Saturday. Unforunately, looking like we could have a little rain.

There's really nothing to say at this point that hasn't been said. Some of us say something but others say nothing. I wish I knew anything about what's going to happen, or what is happening or what happened, but I don't. Having said that, I'm speechless, and reading these posts leaves me with a feeling of emptiness, like when I read a whole paragraph but can't play back that which was conveyed, because it was vacant of anything. That is all.

"...in the event of cardiac arrest because we know there will always be one play, one moment, one image that will rub the paddles together and scream "CLEAR!" bringing our pulse back in a single adrenaline fueled instant." In the alternative, I've learned to carry a small bottle of baby aspirin with me. They also came in handy a couple times during Red Wings playoff games this year.

Nice post. We hope that this year's team will be better. We expect this year's team to be better. We want this year's team to be better. We are told that this year's team will be better. And yet there is fear. It eats at you. Another tussel with Tressel. The Fat Man and the Irish loaded on offense. Sparty confident after last year's drubbing. And worst of all: the fear that Western can do what Appy State and Utah did. What emotion dominates? Hope or fear? They come and go, biologic twins. Confidence overcomes uncertainty...until you let up. And then the nagging doubt returns. Can we be good again? There is only one way to resolve the tension. We must play. We will cheer. And then we will know.

Well yes, we've been planning for weeks now. Should we go with the traditional brats and beer for the tailgate or decide to go a different way? What to wear, what to wear? Get a haircut or leave it long? So many choices, so little time.

I can't wait to make the 5 hour drive up to AA to start the year right. I can't wait to get chills when the team runs out to leap at the banner. I'm looking forward to singing the Victors with my best 110,000 friends. There are few things in this world that I enjoy as much as a live game in the best stadium on this earth. I love bringing people who have never seen a spectacle anywhere close to the masses that will flock to the Big House. Brats are good for games in the middle of the season, but for the opener you need to get some steak. You need to buy some veggies, and some marinade. Shish-k-bob - if you follow my lead on this one, you will thank me later. If anyone is parking in the first available lot on the left (it's $20) as you head towards the stadium using the Ann Arbor/Saline exit (175?) - you can stop by my grill under the only willow tree and have some 'bobs. Go Blue!!!

Considering how last season ended and how I thrashed & blamed RR, I find myself a bit surprised at how EXCITED I am for the season to start. I, recently, ordered & received my #5 blue jersey & can't wait for September 5th to get here!! I will be watching from my apartment in L.A. but will be LOUD enough to be heard in AA...LOL!! GO, BLUE!!
