Is it too late for an RR Era at Michigan?

Submitted by ChalmersE on
I write because I fear the recent events may spell the end of the hopes for a Rich Rodriguez era at Michigan along the lines of a Fielding Yost, Fritz Crisler, Bo Schembechler or even a Lloyd Carr era at Michigan.  Before you jump all over me, I assure you I am not a troll.  I have followed Michigan football since the last time they had losing seasons before 2008.  I was there when Bo was hired.  I worked for ABC during 24-12.  I wrote for the Daily.  And, I've lived and died with the last second missed field goals, 1997, Crable's hit, and the horror.

I've also been a fan of the Rodriguez hiring.  I still remember how excited I was when I checked my Blackberry on a train from New York to Washington on a Saturday afternoon and the Rodriguez rumors had hit the web.  I also don't blame him -- much -- for last year's 3-9 season.

All that said, I think the turn in events makes it unlikely this hiring will turn out happily in the long term.  I believe it will end in one of two ways:  Michigan will go 5-7, 6-6 and 7-5 and the fan base will turn on Rodriguez; or Michigan will go 9-3 and Rodriguez will say I can coach just about anywhere so why do I need this crap and decide to start over somewhere else.

One of my responsibilities in my job is to act as an ethics advisor for a government agency.  I regularly brief senior executives who join the agency about the ethics rules.  For the most part, they are compliance rules -- don't work on things in which you have a financial interest, don't accept expensive lunches or gifts, etc.  I also, however, talk about the infamous "Washington Post" test.  Essentially there are a lot of things one does that are perfectly legal but have an appearance of not being kosher.  If the Post -- or the Times or CNN -- get wind of the issue, the initial story is on page 1.  When the story fails to pan out, it winds up on page B19.  Everyone sees the first story; no one sees the exoneration.

So how does that impact the current situation.  Well we all know the initial story is on page 1.  The exoneration may come, but do you think the Freep is going to put it on page 1.  Do you think ESPN is even going to run stories saying that nothing came of the allegations.

I'm not sure exactly how it came about but Rodriguez has done things to make himself a target.  Perhaps it's jealousy.  Perhaps it's that Rodriguez is a little arrogant.  Perhaps he failed to kiss a couple of asses early on.  But, whatever the issue, there's an issue.  Once that happens, you have to be squeaky clean, or the first inkling of an issue will make it to page 1 and that appears to have happened here.

The fact that Rodriguez is doing exactly what 100+ other coaches is doing is irrelevant.  No one else cares.

There may be some things that can rescue the situation.  Perhaps the most likely is that I'm wrong about Rodriguez taking a hike.  Hopefully his skin is a lot thicker than most people's and that that 9-3 season will not only quiet the critics but make him satisfied with his lot in Ann Arbor.  Other scenarios are some of his brethren coming to his defense.  We're not fans of Jim Tressel or Kirk Ferentz, but if they were to come out and say we've seen the stories and don't think there's a story, that would help immensely.  Someone in the MSM could do some investigation of Rosenberg and totally destroy his story.  If that were to happen soon, that too could lead to a favorable end to the story.   I am, however, not optimistic and that makes me a little depressed at a time when I -- we -- should be looking forward to a season of redemption.

Bull. Everybody is making such a huge deal out of this... Except the school and the school's fans. If in fact RR did nothing, and if he comes out and has a winning year this year, then why would we ever get rid of him? His Era starts on Saturday.

is that if RR does have a good year, or a couple of good years, he might not stick around to build a legacy. I believe this would be a huge loss for us. I know it has been mentioned on this blog numerous times, but the similarities between RR and Bo are far greater than the differences. I cringe everytime I hear the MSM talk about RR being an outsider. The biggest difference is not their character, philosophy, or schemes, but the era in which they coached. Blaze - I'm with you - the RR era starts in 4 days.

Do you think ESPN is even going to run stories saying that nothing came of the allegations. I totally see your point. It's true, people will remember the allegations, not the final conclusion (when proven false.) I disagree slightly with the quoted assertion though. I think the media cause this frenzy, and then eventually report how about the frenzy was wrong, because the person/team was proven innocent. I commented elsewhere that I can see ESPN's College Game Day will have some sort of segment on RR and how he led his team to a good record, despite all the summer distractions.

And I get the feeling of more of a backlash against Rosenberg. No source, just hunch. Right now, there is no substantive reason to worry about Rodriguez being canned or quitting after this season barring a complete disastah. I think anyone even remotely interested in Michigan football is prepared for an up and down season that ends at 6-6. I do believe a bowl game is a mini-must, and that they will be there (I predict 8-4 with wins over MSU and Notre Dame) come season's end.

I hate the saying "winning cures all ills" but he has to win. Åt least 7 wins and I'm hoping that he shocks the college football world and goes 9 - 3 or better! I support Rich Rod and want him here! He can and will do great things if we just quit tearing him down. I, for one, believe that we are at the bottom of the proverbial "barrel". If he can just get through this stuff and have a "successful" season...

So, I guess we should all hope for an 8-4 season, right? 7-5==fans turn on RR 9-3==RR says, "Screw you guys, I'm outa here!" 8-4==New UM Dynasty! Woot!

Does winning even matter to Rosenburg or is this just going to continue if we start rolling up 11 and 12 wins a season? They'll write that he is cheating to win then instead of being such a bad cheater and losing.

Thank you for your kind comment, but I'm not sure I'd use the word "dissenting" to describe my diary. Rather, the point I was trying to make is that it may not matter any more what the truth is. I suspect that Michigan did not violate any rules -- or if it did, it was so innocuous as to pale in comparison with other violations. However, the way this has been handled may not make a difference. RR is clearly upset by the situation; many fans who don't take the time to probe or go to blogs like this are going to be upset. (I'll take for example relatives of mine who are big Michigan fans and live in the Midwest. When we got together last month, they knew about Tate F, but had no clue about Denard R. I suspect that is the case with most fans. They are only skimming the surface of the news and that is a problem in a situation like this.) In any event, getting over the hill on both sides is going to take considerable effort. And, fwiw, I didn't say it was too late; I posed it as a question.

It seems as if the team has been bonding and I think this incident only makes them circle the wagons. There is nothing worse then a caged animal waiting to be unleased and I've got a feeling Western is in trouble. I just hope we win the toss and RR says we want the ball! Rich Rod-ri-guez!!!

A lot of Michigan alumni are arrogant, and I say this as a double alumni of the University (undergrad & MBA). For people in the Michigan/ Midwest area, Michigan is 1 of 2 schools (Northwestern being the other) that is nationally recognized as a solid educational institution. There are many who think that RR is beneath them, doesn't have the "pedigree" of a Michigan Man, doesn't speak perfect English, doesn't read literature (like Lloyd), doesn't have a big boy power O, doesn't respect tradition. Now, people with this attitude are flat out wrong. They believe that they deserve to win because this is Michigan. It's a culture entitlement, which is the same one that brought down GM, Chrysler, and (maybe) Ford. In this day and age, when US News has >25 national colleges better than Michigan, with Michigan dropping a spot or 2 every year, this attitude needs to change and Coach Rodriguez is changing it. This is making some people unhappy. I just hope Coach Rodriguez sticks around enough to win, so those of us that believe in hard work > entitlement will win out.

My prediction is that Rosenberg's whole exercise and agenda are eventually going down in flames. He badly overplayed the very weak hand he was dealt. The net effect will be a much stronger Rich Rod and Wolverine team.

In my opinion, the only reason RR has been getting blasted so frequently in the media lately is because of the 3-9 fiasco in 2008. Once the victories come - and they will - most of the MSM will get off his back.

You know what I'm sick of? People titling their diaries like they're newspaper journalists. All the stupid rhetorical "attention grabbing" yes or no questions. A quick survey: "Is it too late for an RR Era at Michigan?" (No) "Is MSU football overrated?" (Who cares?) Damnit, so maybe there aren't that many. But I hate them.

I just don't get why anyone would think that U of M's fanbase would turn on Rodriguez if we go 7-5 with a freshman quarterback, first year D Coordinator, and a team that went 3-9 the year before. Sure there might be some that turn, but most of them already turned after last season. The AD has shown no sign of souring on Rod and has a history of giving coaches plenty of chances. No, unless we go 3-9 or maybe 4-8 Rod is not going anywhere, maybe not even then. I personally think it is a testament to our program that we are loyal to our coaches, although maybe the Tommy Amaker thing went on a bit too long.
