Spike was the best player on the floor today. Seriously. (Bryan Fuller / MGoBlog)

This season has been, for the most part, a sequence of ever-increasing disappointments: upsets at home, injuries to our key players, and narrow losses to good teams. Things just haven’t gone our way.

UNTIL TODAY.

This was a beautiful afternoon of catharsis, when–despite a now-customary second half scoring drought–Michigan beat a good team and a bitter rival. I sat in the student section and, for the first time since the win over Syracuse, Crisler was alive and roaring.

I won’t profess to knowing the exact sequence of events: I didn’t take notes as I sat there, heart racing, as the Wolverines played their best half of basketball all season, then managed to hold on after taking the air out of the ball in the second half. It’s all an almost surreal blur. Our Weird Guys played a team full of veterans and/or blue-chippers, and but for those descriptions there was no doubt as to who was the better team in Ann Arbor.

Spike Albrecht was sublime (and the game MVP per Kenpom), playING one of his best games in a Michigan uniform. Spike had an efficient 16 points, grabbed 4 boards, tallyied 5 assists, swiped 2 clutch steals, and didn't the ball over once. He’s indispensible to this Michigan team. Ohio State threw a parade of long, quick, and athletic defenders at him, Spike was unflappable and managed to hold things together when things looked on the verge of collapse. Some poised inbounding at the end of the game was just icing on the cake.

Zak Irvin played very well too; his early five points (and a nice assist(!) to Ricky Doyle) enabled Michigan to jump out to a critical early lead, and get the crowd active. After Ohio State stormed back Irvin hit an absolutely vital three from the corner–and promptly celebrated with the Michigan bench, which was awesome–to extend the lead back to six. Ohio State never got closer than a few possessions for the rest of the game. Zak posted a line of 15-7-4-2, which says something about him not being just a shooter, or what have you.

Those two were the only Wolverines in double figures, but nearly everyone else chipped in to help pull off the upset. Aubrey Dawkins scored just five points, though two of them came on an impossibly athletic put-back late in the game. MAAR was a non-factor offensively, but he harassed D’Angelo Russell (who only scored 16 points on 16 shot equivalents and had 5 turnovers to just 2 assists) all game. Max Bielfeldt put up a workmanlike 7-and-7 and sonned Michigan expat Trey McDonald for two consecutive offensive rebounds late. Ricky Doyle had a frightening fall and rolled an ankle, but he put up 8 points in just 13 minutes. Even Kam Chatman had a few nice takes to the rack in the first half to tally six points, and Andrew Dakich of all people hit a jumper to extend Michigan’s lead during the torrid first-half scoring binge.

As for Ohio State, it felt like the Buckeyes didn’t play particularly well, but Michigan played a large part in that–UM ran its best offense all year, and the Wolverine defense consistently harassed Ohio State on drives to the basket, a stark change from the recent streak of permissive interior defense at home. Russell led OSU in scoring, but struggled with the Wolverine defense, often appearing visibly frustrated. Senior Shannon Scott just scored two points on six field goal attempts; Sam Thompson played alright, if not efficiently; Russell’s fellow freshmen Keita Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate might have been two of the three best Buckeyes today.

And–because I have to say it – former McDonalds All-American Amir Williams (from Detroit) and fellow center Trey McDonald (from Battle Creek), combined for four points and ten rebounds in 32 minutes. Thad Matta eventually went with Tate as a small-ball five to match up with Bielfeldt because the Buckeye centers simply couldn’t produce.

Call it a regression to the mean–after all, Michigan simply couldn’t lose all of their close conference games down the stretch, right?–but this game felt like such an extreme departure from the bad luck that’s plagued the Wolverines all season. Today, Michigan played well against a quality opponent and made enough plays down the stretch to win; a nucleus of Spike, Zak, and Max--along with afterthought recruits Aubrey and Mo–finally notched a big win without alpha dogs LeVert and Walton around. This individual game doesn’t change the optics of the entire season of course, but dammit, it felt great to see Crisler alive with the euphoria of an exciting Michigan win again – and it showed what this team just might be capable of next year or a few years down the road.

I was the at the game and I can tell you today was a great sign for the future. Spike will be an amazing leader and backup point guard next year. MAAR and Dawkins just keep progessing way past our expectations. Kam finally showed a glimmer of hope. Doyle looked great on the glass until his injury. Irvin and Spike ran our offense with zero turnovers between the two of them.

No matter how the season ends up, I am confident going into next year. Even if Caris goes pro, I think Michigan will be a scary team next year after a summer of development and progession.

at a breaking point after all the losses.  Those things take a toll on you and make it easy to just give up.  But they didn't.  You have to give them tons of credit.

Perhaps the best thing they did today was avoid overtime.  Things continue to look good for next year.

Good to see a strong win with the youth of this team. Coach will have a tournament team next year and I am really excited for the future. Was awesome to watch while working out on the treadmill by the way.

but Kam (finally) had a solid shift this season then he was pretty much non-existant in the second half. Did he play a lot? It could be one of those things that because I didn't notice him he played decently, I just don't really remember seeing him out there.

It could be the beginning of a streak, too.  You just never know with a young basketball team.  Soemtimes "next man up" at almost every position takes awhile to produce.  With a quality win like this, I am entertaining the possibility that they may have "turned the corner."  If I'm wrong in my optimism, so be it.

This team is full of after-thought, under the radar, or sometimes completely overlooked recruits. To say nothing of how young the core of the team is, and how our two best players are likely done for the season. And they went out today and out-played a veteran team full of blue-chippers.

Beilein has proven time and time again that he knows talent when he sees it, and can coach the hell out of his players. We'll likely need another recruiting haul a la 2012 if we want to get back to being consistent players on the national stage, but arguably no one in America does more with less than Beilein.

Makes the fan in your scream at those bad losses and the close losses, because instead of 14-13, we could easily be 19-8 or something like that. Pretty firmly into the tournament even if we struggle down the stretch.

At the same time, the majority of the teams around the country would've given up and mailed it in by now. Hats off to the coaches and more importantly, this group of players that are still working their asses off to win games for Michigan and win games for each other. It's an honor to watch such heart and effort.

How about a little less cynicism about the players - win or lose? They're ballers and definitely not wierd guys (where does that come from?). Who cares when they joined their class? Again, they're ballers. Here's the thing to think about: imagine a Michigan practice with freshmen getting reps against what? Other freshmen. Typically, freshmen aren't expected to develop other freshmen. Upper classmen are supposed to do that. But Coach Beilein doesn't have that luxery - so he does his thing and develops player,s anyhow. Michigan and all of us fans are blessed.

Looks like I picked the right day to wear my "Worst State Ever" MGoTshirt. Always fun to beat the Buckeyes.  I'm glad they held on down the stretch.  I was worried OSU was going to find a way to sneak this game out.

LOVED watching Spike today.  He looked amazing and in total command.  That was a great performance from him!!! Wonder which starlet he's going to hit up on Twitter tonight.

Well this is as good a time as any to make my inaugural post.

"Wonder which starlet he's going to hit up on Twitter tonight"

Well even after the loss, the night Nik and Glenn were in town I saw Spike & GRIII at NYPD when there were only about 12 people left in the joint at the end of the night, the two of them & a passel of hot girls who were jocking them. Then they walked out and the entire harem, who hadn't seemed to be all together, followed the both of them out & into the night!

So Kate Upton, Kate Moss, Katy Perry or any other starlets aside I think there are plenty of studentlets to keep him amused in the mean time. Though it seemed Glenn was attracting more of the moths.

Kam!! Didn't have a ton of minutes but definitely earned some more PT tonight. He had a few really nice takes and he used his height and length advantage well.

One of these days, Aubrey is going to connect on one of those ridiculous putback dunks and bring the house down.  This will uncork the genie and he will become a ESPN Top 10 dunk machine.

Nice to see Kam have some quality minutes, though the 2nd half was back to the usual.

Well he was hot & he needed to either start the 2nd half or come in quickly to keep him hot if it was going to happen, but instead he didn't start and didn't play for a long time. The same thing happened when Dawkins made a couple of big threes at the end of the half in a game no one else had done a thing, and he too dissappeared on the bench after that. Another time the same thing happened with Rahk. I can't recall the other specifics but I've seen it a number of times this year.

Well, superstitions are now set - I will not start another game thread, and apparently, I shouldn't watch the game either.  I had to miss the game, and I saw, pleasantly, that we were up by 16 at HT.  Then, peeking at my phone, I started to sweat, but then we reached the promised land.  Glad to hear that Irvin played well - we need him to get his act together.  Spike is really turning into a hell of a leader.  Very proud of him and his development.

It feels good that these kids finally got a win - a hard fought win over a rival.  The future still looks bright. Even with all of the injuries and early departures, this team is still fun to watch.  I mean who though Spike would go off like this?  I can imagine what some of the OSU fans must think..."Who is this guy that is dribbling around making us look bad?"

and didn't watch much of the first half.  Then, didn't want to watch much of the second half, afraid I would jinx this great performance.  Nice win, huge three by Irvin when it was really needed!  Never a bad day when M beats OSU in anything.  Go Blue!

Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail.
