1. Weird Jim Harbaugh Era Highlights

Starts at 1:00

There was too much to remember, so we crowd sourced. Sleepovers, satellite camps, the pope, and fun recruiting shenanigans. The Harbaugh era kind of starts and ends with Lou Holtz. There was a lot of diving into pools while fully dressed. People who cover the pope have been watching to see if he ever wears the Jordans that Jim gifted him. Don't drink out of the public fountains in Rome. You ever just grab a handful of meatballs? Character growth arc - Jim Harbaugh and chickens. He told a Peruvian Catholic priest "I'm in the Notre Dame ass-kicking business." Never forget "the white board", what's your favorite quote from it? He's directed traffic for hours. Jim Harbaugh war dad. Alejandro continues to be a real go-getter. Make sure you swipe Freddy P Soft off your shoulder.

2. HOT TAKES and Jim Harbaugh Era Highlight Honorable Mentions

Starts at 50:40

Takes hotter than the San Francisco 49ers in the 2nd half of the NFC Championship (SORRY SORRY. Brian's words, not mine). Talking about moments that weren't the top moments but still note-worthy. Ben Mason, Darboh, and good shit from Jedd. The 2015 BYU game had a lot of all-time single player moments. The evolution of Donovan Edwards' career at Michigan and running power on a kickoff return against Northwestern. Jabrill Peppers fielding punts was a safety blanket we miss. Jim Harbaugh evolved the run game and also brought us the TRAIN! Sad field goals, the emergence of JJ, and Mr. Brightside. The 2016 Indiana snowglobe game. Player development into 4th, 5th, and 6th years has been incredible.

3. Jim Harbaugh Era Top 25 Moments 25-11

Starts at 2:09:03

Everyone has something different that they love the most about the 2016 Rutgers game. Multiple Michigan State things at the expense of Michigan State, including Defeated With Dignity. There are so many stats in the Jim Harbaugh era that were some sort of "Michigan hasn't done ___ in ___ years" and now all those stats are reset. Remembering a lot of Jourdan Lewis moments, but especially that interception. The whole context of this year's Penn State game was to prove if this team was real. THEY SAID THE KID COULDN'T THROW THE DEEP BALL. They say you need a QB to win a national championship but Michigan won it with an elite run game and pass defense.

4. Jim Harbaugh Era Top 25 Moments 10-1

Starts at 3:09:41

Jumping around at Wisconsin was when this program really started to feel special. The 2021 Big Ten Championship Game was just a huge party, Seth threw a cat across the entire room. Ohio State makes this list multiple times. What can man do against such reckless hate. Aidan Hutchinson is coming for you. The top five could really be in any order. Michigan had to figure out how to win against Alabama, but against Washington, Michigan just had better players. The Rose Bowl overtime was like a dream, and it was a real Rose Bowl against Alabama. Mike Sainristil represents what this program was all about, and the pass breakup against Stover is the ultimate highlight of that. In life, hurdle all your fools.

So far I am 4% of the way through this 4 hours of bliss...

What I have learned is this will be the best off-season in the history of Michigan fandom.

Ok, best Harbaughism (19:40)- Peruvian Priest meets Jim and knows he's Catholic, so asks him if he is a Notre Dame fan? Jim responds, to a Peruvian Priest, "actually I'm in the Notre Dame ass-kicking business."

I'm eager for this to be the best off-season ever but there's so much anger at Warde that it becomes tough to read comments.

I totally understand bitching at him for this fault or that one but the negativity tugs at the enjoyment. It's almost as if we'd lost all those meaningful games.

I didn't listen, so maybe that would have provided more context, but I'm not sure if they were talking about not drinking out of the decorative fountains, or out of the drinking fountains. I mean yeah, I'm certainly not drinking out of the Trevi Fountain, Fountain of the Four Rivers, Fountain of Neptune, Fontana delle Tartarughe (low key might be my favorite of all of them), etc. But the free drinking fountains all over the city were one of the absolute best perks, especially since I visited in the sweltering summer heat...

Sad to see Harbaugh go but it's refreshing that Michigan can have a coach leave and we get to have a podcast reflecting on so many great moments and memories. Sure beats the last few coaching changes.

I developed a cough yesterday that kept me home today, so this font of feel-better will have to wait until the work commute tomorrow.  Stupid cough...

I was shoveling this morning and listening to this amazing podcast and I was reminded of a part of my research in South Africa. I spoke to a retired South African diplomat who said that everyone hated the Soviet diplomats not because of Cold War politics but because the Soviets seemed to earnestly believe what they were saying. It seems like a similar phenomenon helps explain why so many rival coaches and so many in the Big Ten hate Harbaugh so much. He doesn't just say he loves football, he actually loves it. And he loves it so thoroughly that it orients almost all of his person. He must be exceptionally annoying to talk to if you KNOW that your job is to say that you love football but you only kind of like it. Or don't want to think about it all the time.

Moore is gonna be an amazing coach, but I'll absolutely miss having a coach who was so committed to football that everything in his life revolves around it. It's also super fitting that this guy left Michigan not because of exhaustion or a lack of fire or old age but, again, because of football.

OK this is kind of an apples vs. oranges thing.

The thing about fascists is that they're often not lying in the sense that they believe their own bullshit.  That's how they function; they just pull shit out of their ass and in the same breath it's suddenly the God's gospel itself.  It's exasperating because you can't negotiate with a deranged lunatic.  I remember reading that someone interviewed Pol Pot when he was already ousted and dying, which is the sort of circumstance when people are considered most likely to be telling the truth (there's probably a Latin legal term for it) and he was still spewing utter nonsense.  Fascist lunacy doesn't have an "off" switch.  Now, some coaches may function like that, but I feel that's beside the point.

The thing about Harbaugh is that he's genuine.  When he says he loves football, he's neither making a sales pitch nor going into delusional denial; he really loves football with every fiber of his being.  This enrages hypocrites and sleazebags to no end, because the #1 way they justify their existence is by assuming everyone else is just like them.  They don't like having a mirror shoved in their face by someone with principles and sincerity.

I have updated my 2024 MGoBlog music playlists with the songs from this episode - here are the links:

What a fun episode - Harbaugh gave us no shortage of quirky, sincere, dorky, and surreal moments - I will miss him (and Herbert, ugh). Super excited about the Sherrone Moore era, too. Now, at some point, we do need to discuss the basketball team...
