Let's Point And Laugh At Michigan State Hockey Comment Count

If you thought hiring Brady Hoke's 47-50 career record was an iffy move, you've got company. Not amongst your company is Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, who just hired Tom Anastos to be Michigan State's head coach. Who is Tom Anastos? Exactly.

Anastos's career record is 0-0. He's spent the last 13 years taking the CCHA nowhere in particular as its commissioner. Before that he was president of the NAHL, which crumbled shortly after his departure and has been almost entirely supplanted by the USHL. According to HockeyDB his coaching credentials consist of a single season as a Michigan State assistant 20 years ago; before that he spent four years coaching UM-Dearborn's club(!) team.

To describe this as a shock doesn't do it justice. This is the equivalent of Michigan hiring Miami (Not That Miami) athletic director Brad Bates, a former Bo player, to coach the football team. If State had any hockey fans they'd be livid right now. They just hired a suit with literally zero track record to pick up the pieces left by Comley, thus proving their Corey Tropp curse isn't broken yet.

I was born in '81, and was a student at State when Mason took the AD gig. The Munn sellout streak lasted pretty much from before my conscious memory until I was a grown-assed man. I remember the national title in '86, a bevy of CCHA titles and tourney titles, a zillion NCAA tourney appearances . . . c'mon. Right NOW, is State a national power? Obviously not. When I was a tyke? Definitely.

Peace

If college hockey was college football, this would be worse than the meltdown that occurred when Chizik was hired by Auburn. Unless Anastassoseses has $200k sitting around to purchase Mario Lemiuex and one of those fake moustache thingy-s, this can only end... poorly.

Wow, I just saw pictures of Anastos and MSU didn't just hire a guy who hasn't coached in 20 years.  They hired a guy with the ultimate look of coaching failure:  he looks like he could be Dave Wannstedt's twin or brother.

I offer some classic Sparty rationalization:

"Above all, a head coach has to be a well-organized administrator who: knows how to delegate appropriately; presents a strong public image; is respected in the field....TA has all of this and more"

.

"I remember back before umaa hired an old guy named Bersenson who had never recruited a player and he was 47. Turned out pretty well.

ps Hoke is 0-0 just like Anastos ."

"he's showed vision and creativity throughout his career. he's stuck to the job he had as commish and did a great job at it. he knows hockey and he coached under one of the best. he did well at umD granted thats not a very high level but he did well there."

"I actually like this hire. His personality seems to be exactly what the program needs right now. He is going to be very knowledgeable. We'll see how it goes. I will be the first to buy tickets to his first game here."

Um let's see. When Michigan hired Berenson Red had 6 NHL seasons as a head coach under him with 1 NHL Coach of the Year trophy to his name. He also was only 45 yrs old at the time, had extensive contacts with a whole network of former NHL players (with boys) who were approx 18 yrs removed from their rookie NHL seasons (let's see what else happens at 18-20 yrs old... oh yeah, you go to college) .

And Hoke is at least 47-50 with 9 years of coaching experience in Div I football as a head coach. Anastos is 0-0 in Div I hockey with 0 years as a head coach.

Keep delusional Sparty.. it suits you so well.

I literally cannot stop laughing right now.....

So when Tom Izzo retires as hoops coach, who is Hollis going to hire to replace him, Karen Davidson?

Can't....stop.....laughing......

He could potentially improve MSUs recruiting. From other sources (o.k hockey message boards), he coached for Honeybaked.  If that is true, then he probably has strong connections to the Honeybaked coaches and maybe the other AAA coaches in the area (possibly even Midwest).

OK, I kept a straight face as long as possible.  This has fiasco written all over it.

You all apparently haven't seen Mr. Anastos' turn as Emil Muzz in the underrated 80's comedy "Dragnet". MSU might be trying to expose the hockey players to the arts and hopefully create a more well-rounded student athlete? If true, this is a very evolved choice for coach.

Look's like he's bailing on the CCHA now the Big 10 is getting into the hockey business..but going to MooU is just a rat swimming toward a sinking ship.

Michigan State’s new hockey head coach is… wait for it wait for it…

A HC with Div I head coaching experience at a top program? No

A HC with Div II or III head coaching experience at a top program? No

A HC with NTDP head coaching experience? No

A HC with Div I head coaching experience at a bad program? No

A HC with Canadian Juniors head coaching experience at any level of success? No

A HC with USHL head coaching experience at any level of success? No

A HC with Div I head coaching experience at a top program? No

A HC with Div I asst coaching experience at a top program? Yes, one season 20 yrs ago

A HC with head coaching experience at all? Yes, UM-Dearborn for 4 seasons in the 1990’s

Anything else? He did coach U-12 girls travel team hockey and did quite well. Oh and he was the commissioner of a college hockey conference that just lost 3 out of 5 marquee programs to a brand new conference.

Your new Michigan St head coach is: Tom Anastos, fmr CCHA commissioner. No I’m not joking.

Mark Hollis can boast of having the best 13 year former commish on staff.  And then sit back and watch his hockey program get burnt to the ground which makes one wonder:  what's Anastos have on Hollis?
