Can Juwan Howard reel in Nimari Burnett? [Jody Demling/247Sports]

Hoops Recruitin' Has A Strategy Comment Count

Ace September 11th, 2019 at 10:52 AM

Hello again. I haven't done a "hey I'm back" post because I'd rather use my energy on actual posts, and also because I'm still largely taking things day-by-day and week-by-week. That said, I'm taking back the recruiting posts for now, so please excuse me while I get back up to speed—I wasn't tracking this stuff much during my time off.

A clear theme has emerged: the blue-bloods can only take so many guys. That's the hope, at least, as Juwan Howard's focus has been on a lot of top-tier prospects with the likes of Duke, Kentucky, and UNC high on their lists. Michigan hosted multiple such players over the last couple weekends for official visits and should gain some clarity relatively soon; for the moment, however, there's not a lot moving.

The Best Bet?

Five-star California combo guard Nimari Burnett recently named Michigan to his final five, and last weekend he was in Ann Arbor for the first of his official visits. While he's known Howard for a long time, he wasn't as familiar with the rest of the staff, and this trip helped get him comfortable with them, per 247's Josh Gershon:

“What stood out was how transparent and real all of the coaches were,” Burnett said. “It’s a perfect coaching staff that complements each other and I had a good time picking their brains.”

Burnett is one of the top combo guards in the 2020 class, which is a role that he would continue to have if he were to choose the Wolverines.

“They said that I would play both the one and two and be able to play in their up-tempo style of play, playing 30-35 minutes a game,” Burnett said.

Michigan is a contender and they lost some competition when Burnett canceled his planned official visit to Louisville this weekend and said he's no longer considering the Cardinals. He still has OVs set over the next month or so to Oregon, Alabama, and Texas Tech. That's tough competition; it's not Kentucky.

[Hit THE JUMP for battles against blue-bloods.]

Done All They Can

Top-15 overall center Walker Kessler visited campus for the MTSU game, and he's another five-star the Wolverines appear to have a real shot at landing. According to Sam Webb, Michigan was going to be Kessler's choice before John Beilein left for Cleveland, and when TMI caught up with his trainer—who accompanied Kessler on the visit along with his parents—it sounded like they may still be the standard-bearer:

“All of our questions were answered,” Ewing later added. “Anything left (regarding Michigan’s standing) is absolutely and utterly out of Michigan’s control. (What’s left) is seeing the last remaining schools that we have (and going over) questions we have for them. There’s nothing left (for Michigan to address). What I will say as a caveat to that is if we go to some other schools and see some things we like and want to compare and contrast to Michigan, then yes, we will definitely call them and make sure we get the answers. But up to this point, (no questions are left unanswered). Zero. They did a great job.”

Now the waiting game for Howard & company begins. Kessler will take his final three visits over the next month starting with Duke this weekend, then North Carolina September 20th – 22nd, and Gonzaga October 4th – 6th. Then it will be decision time.

Visits to Duke, UNC, and Gonzaga can change a recruitment in a hurry, and the Blue Devils are generally considered the favorite despite the above. With a decision that could come shortly after the Gonzaga visit in early October, Howard is putting on the full-court press; according to Webb, he went down to Atlanta this week to get more face time with Kessler.

How you feel about Michigan's chances with another recent five-star visitor, IMG Academy wing Jaden Springer, likely depends on where you look. The Wolverine's Chris Balas isn't optimistic about M's chances with either Springer or Kessler given what he's hearing despite sources telling him the prospects "loved" Howard. Sam Webb, on the other hand, is hearing that Michigan has made it a battle with presumed favorite Tennessee, which could be hurt by already having two top-50 wings in the class. Springer will visit Memphis this weekend and Knoxville in early October.

Michigan hosted top-50 power forward Lance Ware last weekend for an official visit but we don't need to bother breaking down his recruitment:

Unless he pulls a major surprise, he's ticketed for UK.

Visit and Top Group Updates

Top-30 VA center Mark Williams cut down his list to Duke, Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, and UCLA last week. He's already taken officials to the two California schools, and he'll visit OSU and M in October before closing out with Duke, which leads his crystal ball. He told 247's Evan Daniels that Howard's ability to coach bigs appeals to him:

Michigan: “Juwan Howard of course, he’s coming in hot off the recruiting trail, he played in the NBA for such a long time, played the position that I play, or similar to it at least. Just knowing that he’s been there and can help me get there and knows moves he can coach me. He always tells me how he works with the bigs in practice and just knowing he has NBA experience in my position, whereas another coach would be a guard.”

Perhaps that'll be enough to overcome Duke, or perhaps Duke will fill up on centers.

Howard dropped in this week on top-50 Montverde Academy shooting guard Moses Moody, who'll take an official at the end of the month:

Moody has Michigan in a top seven alongside Arkansas (he's a native Arkansan), Florida, Kansas, Ohio State, Oregon, and USC.

In "these guys are going to Kentucky": five-star forward Isaiah Todd will visit Michigan at the end of the month but, again, he's going to UK barring a shocker; same goes for five-star guard Josh Christopher, who's got Michigan in his final five and plans to visit all of his top schools before a decision.

While I'm glad it's finally football season, I'm legit excited for basketball season to start. I really want to see Coach Howard in action and what his team will look like. Maybe it's not that great, maybe it is. But at least for now, I've got that "new shinny" feeling and it's getting me hyped up haha.

I'd like to see a 5* commit ASAP and immediately start to help recruit other top 100 players.  M is a relative unknown at the moment with Howard, and just one 5* commit could turn it into a great class if they can help bring in another 5* and a couple high 4*.

I agree with your take.  5* commits can often beget other 5* commits.  We just need an "ice breaker" to be the first to commit to the new coach at Michigan.  I think that's going to be the biggest hurdle for Howard to overcome in his first full recruiting class.  Kids just aren't familiar with him and what his style of play is going to be.

I'm seriously getting nervous about 2020 basketball recruiting. It was supposed to be a 5 man class that is presumably already filled by Zeb and Jace (depending on if Jace walks on or not), which leaves 3 open spots. If we don't get Nimari Burnett or Kessler, I feel like we gotta hit the panic button. Everyone else mentioned in this article is a lean elsewhere and it doesn't really seem like Howard has any back up options up his sleeve. Seems like our only hope is that some teams fill up and we take the guys who don't have spots at blue bloods

As this write-up states, the blue-bloods only have so many spots.  As an example, Duke leads the Crystal Ball for Walker Kessler and Mark Williams.  They aren't both going to Duke.  I'd gladly take whichever one decides not to go to Duke.  Also, Kentucky already has 2 top wings committed in 2020 -- how many wings do they really take?

Backup options are developing. A lot of late bloomers and guys that decide later. If we miss out on the Nimari's and Springer's of the world we're not gonna end up with a top 5 class at all, but it can still be very good. Coaching changes, transfers, etc. shake everything up in March. Plus the board expands every week seemingly.

Don't be a Chicken Little.

Juwan is looking at other recruits. Ever coach works on backup plans. He just went to watch Jaemyn Brakefield who said he will take on OV.. A visit to see 4* forward JJ Traynor is next. These are the first days coaches can go on the road to recruit. Isaiah Todd scheduled an OV, but he's a longshot.

Don't hit the panic button yet. Don't assume the coaches are incompetent at building a roster. Juwan might be new to college coaching. Martelli and Washington are not.

"... Mark Williams cut down his list to Duke, Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, and UCLA last week."

One of these does not fit with the others, academically...  LOL!!  Otherwise, I'm really hoping that Barnett and Kessler end up in Ann Arbor.  That would make a studly start for Howard's 'crootsmanship, and let his first team get off the ground with afterburners!

its interesting to see Coach Howard getting all these visits from 5* MacDonald's AA types.

of course, i understand that visits aren't commitments, but i think that the way that Coach Howard is recruiting is as much about brand as it is about necessarily landing these kids... its a strategy that presumably looks down the road further.

that said, i think that Kessler and Burnett are the two most likely to land here. Both would be a coup. One would be great.

if Michigan misses out on both, there's a chance some of the other players might choose Michigan still depending on classes and spots...

I'm pretty optimistic at this point though and feel like Michigan has a good shot at a top 10 class, but we'll see once these kids start making decisions

I think Howard is just being Howard and his looking for a Domino's Fab5 effect style.

Remember, He committed to UM and convince Jalen Rose and Chris Webber to follow him.

It looks like he think that logic will work (True or not true, only time will tell us).

I can see where by targeting 5* or top 4* is awesome if you get some of them into the school. However in case of failing, it can be dangerous...

As maybe a strong / legit 4* (Witch was the standard recrutement under Beilein) might feel less "wanted" a be like - Ok Michigan, I am committing to another school... That wanted me more and was not looking at me as safety guy...

And you might end with lower recrues that are just plain happy to get into such a great program...

But, I really believe in Howard. Especially hearing from different sources.

I hope we get Burnett, but I am not optimistic about the optics of going against Bama and Oregon for him.

I think there was a reason Oats was so adamant about staying at Bama and not considering Michigan - he knows he has better access to other things to help with recruiting. And I don't even have to mention Oregon.

It's nice they aren't blue bloods like UK, KU, Duke, and UNC, but I am not optimistic about it at the moment.

footballguy

September 11th, 2019 at 1:08 PM ^

To add to this, we may actually run into an issue with Burnett that we're hoping a blue blood has

We have Zeb already, and Burnett wants to be a 1 (although he's more a 2). I've read Louisville has dropped out because of this reason, so that doesn't give me more hope about Burnett coming. Especially since him and Zeb are coming on separate weekends.

I don't know. The personal relationship between him and Juwan is great and I really hope we land him, but I feel like we have a better shot at a big man. That's juwan's forte, and there's clearly a need on our roster for that.

Mr Miggle

September 11th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^

Here's a direct quote from Burnett about Michigan which was in the Endless Motor article posted earlier.

“They see me playing both guard positions. They also see me see me being a starter playing 30-35 minutes a game and being an intricate part of the team success.”

That's not an issue. That's how Howard has been recruiting him. Burnett is not insisting on exclusively playing the 1, which might be a problem.

footballguy

September 11th, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^

He's not insisting on exclusively playing the 1, but there's little doubt a combo guard of his talent wants to be the 1. This is just the nature of these players.

What Louisville said about his recruitment, and also the fact that Zeb Jackson is in his same class makes me not optimistic about him coming to Michigan.

Mr Miggle

September 11th, 2019 at 6:17 PM ^

Bear with me here, I think Michigan offers just what Burmett is looking for. Two open backcourt positions. That's ideal. The other guard in the class is really a combo. Zeb could play either spot too. It's a good situation for both of them. I don't see Burnett looking at the roster and thinking he can't play the role he wants.

Bama was on Burnett earliest. I think they're a legitimate threat. Oregon has recruiting momentum, however it was earned, and could use a PG in his class. It wouldn't be a shock to see him go to either, but I doubt either of those staffs would dismiss Michigan's chances.

Didnt the Fab Five come together at the McDonalds All-American event, at Juwans effort in reeling a few others in ?  I would imagine that at a game like this, our top recruit can forge things with other prospects.

Mr Miggle

September 11th, 2019 at 4:48 PM ^

What are you talking about with Oats?

The Michigan job opened a month after he took the Bama job. He has a very large buyout. It was very unlikely Michigan would seriously consider him. He reportedly let them know he'd take the Michigan job if he got the same money Beilein was getting. Too expensive with the buyout.

The optics of Oats pursuing the job publicly would have been terrible for him.

footballguy

September 11th, 2019 at 5:29 PM ^

True. That was probably not a good point.

But that being said, the overall point of Bama and Oregon being willing to offer other things still stands.

These are teams that don't have a rich history of basketball, but definitely play dirty in the big sports. Regardless of if their coach is in on it.

I just don't feel great about going against those schools right now, especially when looking at some of the recent recruits they've gotten. That's all.

I am optimistic as Juwan as a recruiter, but besides his personality/relatability, all the same barriers exist in recruiting that were there with Beilein. Unless we have changed our philosophy, but I doubt we have.

Mr Miggle

September 11th, 2019 at 10:38 PM ^

I do think some of the barriers Michigan faced under Beilein are gone with Juwan. No difference in paying players or their families. Not everyone will be recruitable, but it's not like all of these 5*s have their hands out. We've already seen a tremendous difference in the level of interest from 5* players.

That's not because Juwan wants them and Beilein didn't. You hear stories about various handlers. People that want something in exchange just for access to some top prospects. People that steer recruits away from certain schools and towards others. Beilein wouldn't play that game. Juwan is so highly thought of that he may not have to.

Some players do go for the money, but ultimately most of them land in places that make sense for them.

Mr Miggle

September 11th, 2019 at 6:27 PM ^

So far, he seems to be right. The previous favorites seem to be fading and it's looking more and more like it will come down to Duke or Michigan. I'm not confident going against Duke and I've never heard Sam (or anyone else) say Michigan is the favorite or even 50-50.  But the recent comments from Kessler's camp make it look like Michigan is still in it. He's got to report that, not just pessimism based on past recruiting battles.

True Blue Grit

With all these blue-blood players being offered and visited, I hope Coach H has a backup plan is also recruiting a number of the 2nd tier guys.  We are unlikely to fill all 5 spots with top 100 guys IMO, in Howard's first year.

Dburgy82

September 11th, 2019 at 4:52 PM ^

Wouldn’t get my hopes up on these top 50 guys, highly likely the last 2-3 spots in this class are going to come from guys that haven’t been offered yet.

Dburgy82

September 12th, 2019 at 12:07 PM ^

The “buzz” won’t be enough to overcome the relationships that have been developed with other schools/coaching staff that have been recruiting these guys for years.  Plus Juwan is a complete unknown.  According to the vast majority of insiders ( all except Webb) say we trail for all of these guys and that’s after their official visits.  That generally doesn’t bode well in these type of recruitments.  They’ll still get some good talent but you got people here thinking they’ll get 2-3 more top 50 guys, that’s not happening, even 1 more from the guys they offered would be a surprise.

Hey Ace (if you read this far down the comments) or anyone really-

Given we are shooting for higher star rated players than we have become accustomed to, what is the appropriate hit rate on this level of player?  If the most important resource Howard has is his time and he is spending it on these lower probability/high upside top-50 recruits, instead of top 100/150 players, then landing one 5-star and several low star/developmental projects may not work out as well (especially if the 5-star is 1&done type).  Thoughts?

It's either that Holtmann is a really good recruiter who is pitching these kids on building the program from the ground up, or $$$$. He's get a lot of recruits he should not be getting based on their performance. Missing out on DJ Carton was the thing that shocked me most

Hey Ace, I know you said you have to reacquaint yourself with basketball recruiting but what do you think this class ends up looking like when it's all said and done?  Jackson, Howard, Burnett, Kessler, and... ?  Any ideas?
