THE OVERVIEW
The must wins were not won and so here we are, in the NIT. You do not have to pay attention to this but here's a preview anyway. Michigan draws Toledo, as it is the NIT's wont to limit travel in the first round. The Rockets were the MAC regular season champions but lost to Kent State in the conference tourney final, and now they're here.
Toledo had no at-large case despite a shiny record because of a questionable decision to schedule no high-major teams this season. Also they lost to UMKC, East Carolina, George Mason, and Marshall before embarking on their reign of terror in conference play. Michigan's track record against MAC foes is not encouraging. There were escapes against EMU and Ohio, the latter in overtime, and a dismal loss to CMU.
Michigan accepted a bid, but do they actually want to be here? Let's find out!

THE THEM
I hope you like points, because Toledo is Iowa on steroids. They have the #5 offense in America thanks to glorious shooting and vanishingly few turnovers, but their defense is unfathomably bad: 287th, because they get annihilated on the boards and bother approximately no shots. This is largely because they play five-out most of the time.
Kenpom designates JT Shumate as the center because someone has to get stuck in that bin; Shumate is 6'7", 210. IE: a wing. His DREB rate is 12. IE, a wing. Shumate is incredibly efficient at relatively high usage levels, shooting 61/41/87 on the season with a nonexistent turnover rate. He is a 99th percentile spot-up shooter and attacks closeouts mercilessly against lower-level competition; he is shooting 79% at the rim.
It would be nice if there was some sort of high major sanity check on the schedule; there is not. The best team Toledo played is UAB, which finished 78th in defensive efficiency; Shumate ripped them for 20 points on 13 shooting possessions. If your glancing at the Michigan roster and wondering who the hell is going to check this guy… well, yeah.
Fellow 6'7" wing Setric Millner Jr is basically 2 Shumate 2 Furious. He's not quite as efficient because his TO rate is 13 instead of 8 and he doesn't get to the basket as much as Shumate; on the flipside he rebounds more and is hitting 44% from three. He is still an excellent offensive player but his ORTG is merely an excellent 118 instead of Shumate's otherworldly 135.
Both of these near-clones are merely okay at pull-up jumpers and are lethal on catch and shoot opportunities, FWIW.
The guy setting up all the catch and shoot opportunities is point guard RayJ Dennis, the most spectacularly-named of the four Rockets with a standalone capital J in their first name. Dennis was solid a year ago after transferring in from Boise State and blew up this year. His usage shot up almost ten points as he got more efficient, shooting 53/37/77 and turning in an assist rate nearly triple his TO rate. The highlight film above shows an incredibly craft point guard who uses hesitations and pump fakes to get to the basket, where he's pretty great for a 6'2" guy creating almost all his own shots. He's 64% at the rim and 44% on other twos; that is a super high floor for a late clock possession. He's also one of three guys who's a threat to pull up from three.
The other two guards are also capable scorers, but someone has to get the usage short stick and it's them. Dante Maddox is another lethal three point shooter; he's hitting 45% from deep and actually has a slight majority of his attempts from outside the arc, unlike the rest of the starting five. He still fits into the Not Just A Shooter bin because he does have an appreciable number of twos that he hits at a 54% clip and he drives to get to the line a lot.
Ra'Heim Moss is the only starter who's eh from three, but he's okay enough there that he can penetrate. He's extremely efficient inside the arc, hitting 57% and getting to the line a bunch, whereupon he hits 80% of his FTs.
The Toledo bench:
- AJ Edu is an actual post at 6'10, 225, and he's literally the only guy Toledo puts on the floor who is not a three-point threat. He gets about a third of Toledo's minutes and you can bet that Dickinson will be on the floor for all of them. He is mostly a Backup Stiff but does have a sky-high FT rate and hits 71% from the line.
- Jumbo guard EJ Farmer gets about 40% of Toledo minutes and is a guy you might consider leaving on the perimeter; he's got a 38% hit rate from deep but on just 29 attempts after going 1/12 as a freshman. He is more of a slasher who uses his size to get up shots at the rim that fall at a solid rate due to the five-out nature of the offense making rim protection difficult.
- Andre Lorentsson is Just A Shooter hitting 37%. He is another 6'7-6'8 three point threat.
THE TEMPO FREE
Overall numbers:
All the drill-down stats are pretty and green. They hit 40% from three, which is second in the country, but don't actually take that many. They're 243rd. You could levy a criticism there except they're 26th at making twos and they get to the line and they hit free throws, so whatever. It's all working.
The defensive numbers are the flipside. They are awful at contesting all kinds of shots, awful on the boards, and these numbers would probably be close to rock bottom nationally if they'd played a high major schedule.
THE KEYS
Styles make fights. This will be a fascinating chess match for both coaches, as Toledo plainly cannot hope to check Hunter Dickinson without swarming him and Hunter Dickinson is going to have to run around chasing a 6'7" wing who's a deadly shooter. Will Michigan go zone? Will they try the Robbie Beran gambit and stick Dickinson on Moss?
This is a situation where Tarris Reed minutes at the five will be a major help defensively, and I'd expect Michigan to use some unusual rotations to make sure that Dickinson is out there whenever Edu is on the court.
On the other end of the floor, we've seen it all before. Expect Dickinson to get instantly doubled as soon as he touches the basketball. Hopefully Michigan can get after some of these guards and allow Dickinson some easy opportunities either on Kobe assists or acting as the roll man.
Vibe exorcism. I mean I don't want to be here and you don't want to be here and they probably don't want to be here but this tournament is an opportunity to maybe reset and get some footing and go into next year on a bit of an upswing. It could happen! Michigan could be like let's not be a very unwatchable basketball team!
Get anything from the four spot. Look at the defensive rebounding numbers. They're begging you to take their lunch money. Someone take it. Maybe hit a three, I don't know. Let's get crazy.
McDaniel one on one defense against RayJ. You don't have a backstop against this offense. RayJ is their highest usage player; he's not super athletic but he's a senior and has the moves.
Maybe whisper in some ears about a transfer? Anyone with remaining eligibility would look real nice as an important bench piece or even a starter.
THE SECTION WHERE I PREDICT THE SAME THING KENPOM DOES
Michigan by 8.
2022-23 Michigan Basketball Play Well Against a MAC School Challenge
Difficulty level: impossible
Now this is awkward. I watched the videos to get a feel for how Toledo plays but now I think I might like them more than Michigan.
Yeah, if KenPom et al think Michigan wins this game by 7+, I have to rethink my entire ncaa bracket, which relies on such ratings to predict the 6-11, 7-10 & such match-ups.
If this game was on my bracket I'd be taking Toledo without a moment's hesitation.
We'll see... if Michigan loses I'll be going back in & re-doing the bracket on gut instincts rather than Torvik!
The flaw in this is in the NCAA tournament everyone is motivated to play. Here Toledo has a chance to beat Michigan which for a MAC school is a big deal so the motivation should be high. What is Michigan's motivation for what is essentially an exhibition game?
in the NCAA tournament everyone is motivated to play
you would have thought everyone would have been motivated to play in the last must win game to get to the tourney. Alas...
The flaw in your reply Maizen is if, as you theorize, in the ncaa tournament every team is equally motivated, I'd still be picking Toledo to win this game. Michigan was just a particularly flawed basketball roster this season.
So, what's Michigan's possible motivation to win this NIT game?
To get to play even more games?
And therefore to make it to the NIT Final Four in Vegas?.
Well that's MY motivation for them to win anyway!
Welp - they won & covered!
I guess I'm leaving my bracket alone!
Go Blue!
no one over 6'7" in their lineup. dickinson could drop 40 if he wanted
I'll predict insta double and a can we make open looks and move ball out of it? If the past is any predictor unlikely.... If they don't double look out Dickinson will go off... They will
Eh if Dickinson is motivated and actually working to get post position doubles shouldn't matter that much. If the guy behind you is 6'7 you can pretty much just shoot over him from good post position. The double will only really matter if he's having to dribble and back the guy down. On top of that Dickinson should be cleaning up on the offensive glass which should lead to easy points. If he's engaged motivated he's putting up 20+ no problem.
If you watched the rutger game you already know what HD will do if double or triple-teamed - dribble until a smaller guy strips him from the blindside!
That was bad, especially the one where he pretty much looked at the guy coming and then seemed to simply try to dribble higher and then lost it.
But he's been pretty good passing out of double teams.
Omg the "attempted to dribble higher" moment might've been it for me other than the missed FT box-out. I can't believe he tried that. God what a mess of a 2nd half.
"Pretty good" until the season absolutely required a W anyway!
And I've been pretty good at double posts lately.
Oh man, we're doing actual NIT previews?
It is a M basketball game right?
Is this really any different than say, the Alamo Bowl?
No, and it's probably not even as dumb as the Alamo bowl because guys will actually play in this exhibition.
Of the things I could write, nearly all of them don't quite feel right.
So...
Go Blue!
Well, you can call him Ray and you can call him Jay and you can call him RayJ …
One other interesting aspect is dichotomy between Toledo's regular and post-season success recently. They've been the MAC regular season champion three years in a row, and while they did have a somewhat down season during the COVID year in 2020, had been the regular season runner up in the two seasons before that. So they've been either the #1 or #2 seed in the MAC tournament five of the past six years (with it cancelled the one year they weren't top-two), but haven't won it once, and are only 6-5 in the MAC tournament over those five years.
Not sure it means anything, especially given how we've played this season. But hopefully we can at least beat them so I can avoid hearing about it from my mother in law...
The Rocket Man picture is fantastic. My grandfather played basketball at UT back when they still used peach baskets, around 1920.
How about starting Baker at the "4" since Toledo doesn't have one. Maybe his shooting stroke will return and it would be better than seeing Tschetter get blown by and T-Will trying to drive the lane. And, if Jett decides defense is optional let Baker have some of his minutes too.
I agree with that, except Baker isn’t returning next season. I suspect the coaches will give more minutes to the returning players. That said, I’m interested to see how many minutes HD, Kobe and Jett get. Same for TWill, Barnes and Khayat.
That said, I’m interested to see how many minutes HD, Kobe and Jett get.
They're going to try to win the games, so if these guys are suiting up, they'll play normal minutes. Especially since each of them still have stock to improve.
I'm not sure what "normal" minutes will be for Hunter though. To Brian's point, who is he going to guard? I'm sure he'll play a lot but we also might go some small ball. When he's on the court, it could a hilarious case of him scoring almost every time (or drawing triple teams) while Toledo scores back almost every time.
HD getting 35 minutes to Tarris’s 5 (and Tschetter’s 17) was interesting. I don’t know what it means.
Totally agree, was just going to make this comment. In this game, it seems like Baker at the 4 (or really Jett at the 4 or even Jace) would improve our offense and would be a better matchup on D. And rebounding does not seem as critical (I'm sure I will regret that last statement).
Hopes on the "want to" with this current team is quite low
I hope they show fight
I would love to see this team really turn the page and play with a different attitude. Exorcise those vibes! I hope they remember they get to play college basketball at Michigan and just let loose and play their best game.
these numbers would probably be close to rock bottom nationally if they'd played a high major schedule
Sure but if everyone played a high major schedule they'd still probably be where they are.
No question the defense is atrocious as indicated by the adjusted efficiency rank of nearly 300.
That said, it's not as bad as EMU's defense which is close to rock bottom nationally. At least Michigan scored 88 on them.
It's pretty comparable to CMU's defense, which, good lord how did we score fewer than 1 ppp against them?
I didn't see that game cuz I was at the pep rally in Scottsdale, but man. Checks notes, oh Jett was 4-14 from the floor. BuT hE's A sCoReR! Hunter was somehow 3-7 at the rim too. And omg, CMU actually shot worse than us from 3! So glad I didn't see that. They had 17 OREBs. Wow. Hunter and Jett each had 2 DREBs. Woooooof.
SMH.
Too bad their star freshman's out for the year:
Love it.
GREAT pull. Very underrated comment.
Just imagine if Dickinson was on their team. They would be incredible. You couldn't double Dickinson because the rest of the crew on the floor will hit shots.
Correction: they used to suck at rebounding.
Until they play us.
Will be an interesting game. I assume it'll be points-y but Michigan can play defense and Toledo absolutely can't so we'll see how this game actually turns out. I assume it'll be something in the 90s but who knows.
Yeah, I agree hence Michigan being a solid favorite. They at least can play defense.
That said, Toledo will likely double/triple team Hunter and/or play a zone and live with a bunch of open threes because we can still miss those.
That'll be their "defense".
I'd love to see Michigan do well in the NIT this year. Ending the season with a bunch of wins against decent teams would help in the morale department.
In other words, moral victories?
If Dickinson doesn't put up 30+ points against these guys, it's a big fail for Michigan's offense.
Either that or the team needs to hit at least 12 threes. If they're doubling Hunter, they can limit him a bit just by forcing him to pass but then it'll open up a ton of open threes. And that's what they'll do with Dug and Twill/Tschetter/Reed on the floor.
“Maybe whisper in some ears…” lol
Ha, yeah, that's what I was thinking reading this! I was like oh, I'd take that guy (Chumate) and then oh def would take that guy (RayJ).
Get Hunter back, add 3 Toledo starters (+40% from 3) + Reed and McDaniel and Young Papa = Final Four Team
Brian, I appreciate your commitment to this NIT preview, so much so that I read it. Bravo!
