OT- New BBQ place in AA
Satchel's BBQ just opened up today at 11 and I just got back. It isn't the best BBQ in the world but it is the best BBQ in the area. Ive been to the BBQ place in Pinkney and Fenton and this is much better. Its next to the Whole Foods on Washtenaw
edit- so the roommate just got back from work and he stopped there on his way and said that it was dry and only ok. I was there 7 miutes after they opened so that might be the reason, its no excuse though, if you want to be considered good BBQ you have to provide quality food throughout the day. Still, it was really tender and juicy in the morning

Slows is on Michigan Ave near where Tiger Stadium used to be.

The only thing I've ever had at Slow's is the brisket, and that's worth going back many times for.

Yea, I had the triple play with the ribs, brisket, and pulled pork. The brisket and pork were great.

In other BBQ news, slows recently opened Slows-To-Go! Same food, same menu, but now much quicker and easier to get carry out.

..."much quicker and easier"?...kind of ironic for a place called Slows.

Yeah. It maybe good by Midwest standards but I have been spoiled by inlaws from south Carolina. I have yet to find anything in the Midwest that can replicate quality southern BBQ or even sweet tea for that matter. I should check out this new place sometime. Thank you for the tip.

You know KC is technically in the midwest, right?
February 14th, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
About as much as southern Indiana. Even then I consider southern Indiana more SEC country than Big Ten. I consider that area to have more in commmon with the SEC than the Big Ten, especially when you take into account the average number of lost teeth of the townies in Bloomington...

Because it's a zig-zaggy line, but Southern Indiana is a lot more Kentucky, where Northern Indy is a lot more suburb of Chicago-ish. And you could argue the South starts south of Toledo in a lot of parts of Ohio. The South definitely goes further north than the North goes south.

But KC is in the Great Plains, not the midwest. You can make an argument that St. Louis is in the Midwest, but if you're West of the Gateway Arch, it's pushing it.

And I'm from Southern Missouri, which I consider to be more of the South than the Midwest. Still, the Gov't is the ultimate source.

Does your handle suggest that you were a Hokester from way back or did you some how change your name and keep your mgopoints? If if is the latter, how did you manage that?

Just make the drive to Slows. I would committ murder for their mac and cheese.

i just wish the line wasnt always so long
February 14th, 2011 at 2:14 PM ^
or sit at the bar. wait behind someone who's about to leave. usually won't wait more than 15-20 mins
February 14th, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^
...and strike up a conversation with them while they're waiting to pay their bill. 'Cuz if you're eyeing their seat, someone else probably is too.
February 14th, 2011 at 3:08 PM ^
true, that would work, we always put our name in and have to wait an hour+, kinda sucks but still worth it most of the time
February 15th, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
Or just go to Slows-To-Go.....quick and just as delicious.

by a long country mile. No other place has ever come close for me, unfortunately. It was a terrible tragedy in our house when they closed. I just wish I'd soaked my Delong's t-shirt in their sauce before they shut their doors. So does my dog.

Hey...you guys do know that I really need to start my diet today!?!?!
February 14th, 2011 at 3:38 PM ^
As long as you stick to a rigid schedule of not eating any later than 6PM, you can occasionally have BBQ on a diet.

This thread made me so freaking hungry for BBQ. Thanks, goblog community.

finally- southern barbecue in ann arbor! went to satchel's - just opened today- and had barbecue the way it should be. the best i've had in these parts. brought back memories of pulled pork roadside joints down south... in my mind, beats the blue tractor hands down... and also a deal. Prices were better than I expected.

I never thought much about BBQ until I visited my wife's family in Alabama a couple years ago... Fat Boy's in Prattville. Dayum! I could eat there every day! We tried another place in Montgomery but it wasn't nearly as good.
On the drive home I made us stop in Nashville so I could get more BBQ. Then at the Outer Banks we drove up to Sauls Bar-B-Que for some vinegar heaven. I'm hooked!
Anxiously looking forward to a visit to Satchels!

I spent a summer in Kansas City as an intern, and I gotta say that barbeque puts the Big Ten portion of the Midwest to shame. The best places were not the big names like Arthur Bryants or Oklahoma Joes, but the hole in the wall mom and pop places. Just simply delicious, best ribs and brisket I've ever had. Ironically, the second best bbq I've had was in Hawaii, a little place in a strip mall with just unbelievable beer can chicken.
So with somewhat of a gauge of decent BBQ, I've gotta say that Slow's is the best I've had in Michigan in my four years here of college. Great beer selection as well, but the food is very good. I love their baked beans with the hot peppers inside, and the mac and cheese was great too. The ribs were very good, not great, but the brisket was the most tender (not best, but most tender) I've ever had. Great brisket.
I went to Blue Tractor a few weeks ago looking for some good BBQ locally beacuse I got into Friday Night Lights, and that show makes me want to eat BBQ like there's no tomorrow. I was severely, severely disappointed. I got both the pulled pork sandwich and a brisket sandwich, and both meats were pretty dry and without a lot of flavor. Sauces were fine, but a good sauce is no substitue for subpar meat. Really hoping this new place is good...

I had this place for lunch today, and it was just alright. They were out of brisket, so I'll probably go back sometime in the near future to try it. My main complaint is that there wasn't enough smoke flavor in the pork. It's pretty difficult to make brisket without enough smoke, so I'm willing to give the place another shot after they work the kinks out.

I'll give it a try but these "new" places always seem to dissapoint.
