scout analyst says Cooper to MSU or Iowa [UPDATED]
http://michigan.scout.com/2/1044322.html
i hope he's wrong. he didn't say he had inside info. come on, darian, you don't want to be a criminal nor get a bizarre muscular disorder.
UPDATE: Eugene Hankerson just intimated that we will lose out on Cooper. He tweeted:
GBW heads, those who say Cooper is a "huge" loss are over stating the situation. I'll say more after signing day. Michigan will close well.

i do too, but cooper feels like marcus hall last year. but im concerned, because if he is not smart enough to pick michigan over msu, then ill gladly wait until hoke has a full year to recruit, to land a much higher rated recruit at dl next year.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
Marcus Hall never seriously considered Michigan (despite reports). Cooper at least gave the Wolverines a shot, and took an official visit late in the process.
Not similar situations at all.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:33 PM ^
oh really? didn't hall officially visit, just like cooper? if he did, then its exactly the same, because i felt the same about cooper now as i did about hall then.
February 1st, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
Dude. Seriously. Calm down. DMY.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:51 PM ^
"because if he is not smart enough to pick michigan over msu"
Do we really have to go here?
February 1st, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
Marcus Hall was 2 years ago. If you are referring to the Marcus Hall from Glenville.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
as they are right.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:24 PM ^
Again, not a lot of credence to be put to this. All the gurus seem to be rehashing what Farrell came up with which was that it's a 2-horse race between the two. Except none of them have said what they're basing that on and there's also a rumor that Cooper may not even have an MSU offer anymore.
Reality is, no one really knows what's up with either Cooper or Fisher. Unless someone comes out with something definitive we're in it until he makes his decision.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:28 PM ^
And every year they are far from perfect.
I think it's Iowa or Michigan for Cooper, Iowa leads.

I guess we'll all know tomorrow.

make guesses too.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:41 PM ^
We get Sean Parker, we don't get Demar Dorsey?
None of the major sites had Dorsey going blue.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:44 PM ^
And let us not forget about last year!
February 1st, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
Sean Parker has been a silent commit for months before the last minute change of heart the night before signing day. It was a major surprise that he chose Washington at the final hour at NSD.
GBW actually had Dorsey going to Michigan and was confident that he would choose blue. They were literally the only one who picked Dorsey to Michigan while everybody else has him going to FSU.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
You obviously don't know the "Rabackin' It" story...
February 1st, 2011 at 1:48 PM ^
Sean Parker was a silent commit and switched to Washington at the last minute because his friends were there. That's why I don't really pay attention to this stuff.
Chances are they don't know shit, and even if they do, it's likely to change before signing day, so it doesn't really matter what you know now.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^
But I usually hate these "guess" jobs.
Everyone, every year, takes them too serious.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:41 PM ^
Did the OP even read the article. His name is Darian Cooper, so I don't think "Darius" caring about rhabdomyolosis is a big deal.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:17 PM ^
you're right. i corrected it. sometimes my darius morris man crush takes over my brain.
February 1st, 2011 at 3:44 PM ^
rhabdomyoLYsis
cells lyse, they don't lose.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:43 PM ^
Aren't these the same analysts predicting Fisher to UofM? I know there was a link shared earlier on this site.
I will take 1/2 of them with a shit eating grin on my face if we're able to get Willingham/Clark/Barnett.
February 1st, 2011 at 1:52 PM ^
Isn't there some quote from Cooper himself talking about MSU's multiple defensive sets being "one con against?"
February 1st, 2011 at 1:56 PM ^
He seems to be concerned about schemes. I know he had an issue with us running the 3-3-5. I hope that going back to 4 down gives us a better chance.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
Happens. We got Rawls, pulling for Frank later tonight. Willingham tomorrow. Iowa has had the lead in Darian's recruitment so far so Hoke & Co. gave it the best possible shot.
2012 - book it, we will get 2 DT's at minimal. !! Go Blue.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
If Cooper is really interested in majoring in business like he had said, I can't see why he'd pick Iowa (joke of a B-school). MSU's is OK at best, but the Michigan Ross School is awesome. I think the biggest challenge we faced is getting involved with him so late in the process. Next year's D-tackler class is almost as critical as the offensive line will be. But, let's all see what happens tomorrow before totally panicking.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:34 PM ^
am sorry but i'm not getting the gist of hankerson's tweet... how does that imply cooper isnt going blue?????? i must be misreading it. please explain.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:24 PM ^
You're right, it's completely nonsensical. All he's really doing is trying to get people to follow him on Twitter. There is a rumor that something happened at the Crab Bowl (Baltimore-area vs. Washington-area all-star game) that caused Penn State to back off -- probably total bullshit. However, Rivals Rutgers attended the Crab Bowl week and says this about him:
"Cooper was listed at 6-foot-3, 275 pounds coming into the week. However, in reality he is a bit shy of 6-foot-1. He also does not have the huge frame that most college defensive tackles possess. He has a great motor but his size causes some question marks about his potential at the next level."
My guess is Hankerson plans to basically say the above -- that Cooper isn't as big as people thought, so losing him to Iowa is not the end of the world. I'll wager that the Rutgers guy's assessment is more about "She didn't dump me, I dumped her" than anything else, and Michigan is very keen on having Darian play for the home team in Ann Arbor.

I've heard this sort of statement from so many recruits over the years who go on to enroll at schools that are vastly inferior to UM in terms of academic standing that I automatically discount it. I remember when we were going after Myron Rolle that many thought we'd be in the driver's seat against Florida State because of Rolle's stated priority on academics. Rolle did well for himself at FSU, but Free Shoes U ain't UM.
For the large majority of highly recruited kids, the degrees they're looking at are just commodities with very little differentiation in their eyes between schools. If Jake Fisher doesn't regard a UM degree as anything particularly advantageous versus a degree from another school, then he's a lock for someplace else. Probably the same with Cooper.
February 1st, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
Ahem, "did well for himself" greatly undersells what Myron Rolle did at FSU. I don't think you can really do better than being a Rhodes Scholar as a football player. . . or, frankly, as a student, unless you drop out and found Microsoft/Apple/Facebook.
February 1st, 2011 at 2:35 PM ^
I am so "glass is half full" now that I just focus on the "Michigan will close well" and skirt over the "Cooper is a huge loss." parts of the post.
February 1st, 2011 at 3:04 PM ^
Nothing against the OP or the tweet, but I'm going to reserve my wails and/or cheers of joy for tomorrow when decisions are official.
February 1st, 2011 at 3:05 PM ^
So this latest comment from Hankerson is essentially saying that it's ok if we lose out on Cooper b/c we have some other secret guy in the works?
February 1st, 2011 at 3:16 PM ^
likely he is just commenting on the strong finish of Hoke but my newly rediscovered optimism reads the post as, yes, we have a secret 4 or 5 star guy in the works. Why not!!??
February 1st, 2011 at 3:44 PM ^
Jernigan :)
A guy can hope, right!
February 1st, 2011 at 4:04 PM ^
Jernigan would be a coup right now! I hope this snowstorm doesn't help the SEC too much..
February 1st, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
im in the glass half full category too!!
i read the "close well" as we have our other targets lined up and we will finish better then expected.....BUT
Glass Half FULL, going FOR ALL THE WAY FULL says "give me a surprise!!"
either way, all i can really say about recruiting is that it sure is a fun time!

Supposedly per DeMatha Coach Bill McGregor.
