TomVH: Quick Recruiting Update
In the weekly update on Monday I had reported that 3 star Florida DT Trevarris Saulsberry (6'4", 252 lbs) and teammate 3 star DE Jordan Williams (6'4", 240 lbs) were offered by Michigan. Both are committed Tennessee, and both had told me they are 100% committed to the Vols.
Trevarris told me today that they will be getting a visit from one of the Michigan coaches this week. He's not sure who and he's not sure when, but he knows someone is coming to see him. He still maintains that he's 100% committed to Tennessee and also says if Michigan had been on him earlier they would have a chance.
Michigan will probably have a better pitch if they have a defensive coordinator in place, especially if it's one from the NFL. We'll see what happens, it might be something to keep an eye on.
You can see Trevarris' highlights here, and Jordan's film is here.

I still +1 you cause you're Tom even though I hated your news.

Do you like the news better now that you've seen the thread posted right after this one? I mean, no kid in his right mind is going to say "y'know, I'm sure it would be nice to play for a DC that was just the DC for the f'ing Baltimore-Reed-Lewis-Suggs-Burgess Ravens, but hey, I committed to Tennessee, and I'm an adolescent of my word!"
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to hope that rumor is true.

Now that it is confirmed I'm a lot more optimistic and a lot more drunk. Both are good things.

Thanks Tom - just another reason why you're one of the best posters on this blog (ass kiss). Is it bad of me that I read this and think "desperate times"? As in, Tom's trying to appease the fanbase with an update, and in this update we are looking at two kids that are very solid to another school?
Will we get more than 10 recruits?

When I saw this I got so excited I spilled my drink, Thanks Tom !

Well that is semi-decent news I guess. Anything helps out with today's barrage of not so good news.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
I guess I won't read too much into the 100% percent committed thing but I can't help but wonder why we are spending time on these guys who probably won't flip their commitments as opposed to anyone else. Are we that desperate or does Hoke and his staff think that their chances with these guys aren't that bad?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
committed.. why allow someone come see you? It's a waste of time right?.. I would say they seem more 99.9% committed than 100%.
I mean if you were going there for an official.. why not.. free trip... but this is just a waste for everyone's time for someone 100%.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
Gonna have to agree with you on that. Seems like if theres no chance, our energy would be best served talking to others whom we may actually be able to sway.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:30 PM ^
the coaches wouldn't bother. Just guessing, but there it is.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:36 PM ^
Are you Justin Bieber?
January 18th, 2011 at 8:27 PM ^
I think that it's worth a shot if they can turn a few young men into coming to the University of Michigan. You can never underestimate the effects of a face-to-face meeting. They could be hearing from a seasoned defensive line coach with a National Championship ring and a Defensive Coordinator who has coached Ray Lewis, Suggs, and Ed Reed. Hey, it could happen to work...
January 18th, 2011 at 5:55 PM ^
Thanks Tom. I wonder what's the story since both these guys seem committed to Tenn. Are we upset that they got Arnett.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:56 PM ^
Thanks for the updates Tom. I was wondering if you talked to Frost at all. Is Hoke still going down there for an in home visit, or is he 100% committed to Auburn? How about Fisher? Did Hoke meet with him yet?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
I'm sure glad that the coaches are pursuing committed prospects who we are just starting rto look at instead of Lucien, Frost, Fisher, etc.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
It would really be nice to get them. Start with them, and a really strong D-line class next year (I'm looking at you Wormley!) and we'll be back to MANBALL in no time.
January 18th, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
This news really sounds like we might have an in again on Jernigan. From everything I heard, he liked us, he just wasn't sure about the 3-3-5 and playing NG, but with and NFL DC coming in, you have to think our chances will increase.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
I presume that the reason we didn't recruit these guys earlier, was because we had better options that were solid at the time. Right?
January 18th, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
due to the coaching change there could be any number of reasons that Hoke has his eye on them and RR didn't. Just saying, this might be a good foot in the door for explaining to them why we weren't in there earlier.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:32 PM ^
... well, when it's the last second of the game and your quarterback (RR) got sacked back at the 50 and knocked out of the game, a Hail Mary is your highest percentage play.
January 18th, 2011 at 8:31 PM ^
When did we ever have any solidly committed defensive line recruits before? That was one of the bitches from everyone about our class, even when Rich Rod was here.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:58 PM ^
I'm sure nothing will come of this but good luck to those kids. Nice of them to at least hear what the coaching staff has to say.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:59 PM ^
Trevaris looks like he's 36 years old
January 18th, 2011 at 6:01 PM ^
Definately 37
January 18th, 2011 at 6:02 PM ^
haha wow I suddenly had flashbacks of Oden.

on players physical appearance. That said, he totally looks like a Klingon.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:31 PM ^
Klingons are known for their aggressiveness and donkey-hate rage. They also make great fullbacks because of that crest. Owen Schmitt, watch out.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
that guy play for the Ravens? Oden effect.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:04 PM ^
He looks at least 10 years older than me.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:00 PM ^
BH time to get that NFL DC on board and hoke he works like the pied piper and brings them in.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:01 PM ^
On a good note for today, I read that Daren Kitchen has been in contact with the new coaches, and may be closing in on an offer. Can anyone confirm?
January 18th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
If we turned down Devin Lucien and offer Daren Kitchen, I will flip my lid.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:29 PM ^
Agreed. I'm still upset about that one. At this point though I'll take any commit we can get.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:34 PM ^
I agree. I was always under the impression Daren Kitchen was a plan B or C. It looks like we have a few more DBs we are targeting (McClure, the other name slips my mind). I would think we would target them first. I would imagine we can offer Daren Kitchen on signing day, and he would sigh his LOI (if nothing else worked out).

January 18th, 2011 at 7:42 PM ^
This is it, and nothing more.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:09 PM ^
If Kitchen is offered over Lucien then that is criminal. Since the Mattison hire I doubt it happens though. My DB recruits in order go
Countess
McClure
Raven
Taylor
January 18th, 2011 at 7:45 PM ^
I agree there are DBs we'd rather have than Kitchen, but what does that have to do with Lucien? They play different positions. Do you think it's possible that Hoke just thinks we have a bigger need at DB right now than WR? Kitchen is 6'1" - which could either mean Hoke wants to get taller CBs in at UM, we currently have few tall corners, or he thinks Kitchen can add weight with that frame and play safety, a position we currently have zero commits this year, and only a few of on the current roster.
January 18th, 2011 at 7:10 PM ^
The coaches like taller DB'S,what's wrong with that.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:02 PM ^
I like the fact that Hoke (and really who hasn't) has identified our weakness-defense and DL- and is trying to address it. It is a cliche, but it is true- the game is won and lost at the line of scrimmage. If he offered them and is sending someone to meet with them, then there must be some reciprocated interest. Perhaps there are some potential recruits for the 2012 year there also whom we might contact as well.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:03 PM ^
Why is everything and everyone against us? Can you do an update on that?
January 18th, 2011 at 6:06 PM ^
I was like this when I saw: "Recruiting Update" -
Now I'm like -

Greg Mattison reported hired by Michigan
January 18th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
Tom, since Mattison is reported to be our new DC, who are some of our potential defensive recruits that you think this would impact?
January 18th, 2011 at 6:21 PM ^
And if anyone wants to call Ray Lewis a Klingon, first let me get in my car, lock the doors, start the engine and put it in Drive.
