Kevin Sousa Decommits
Though the buzz late last week centered on the commitment status of FL RB Demetrius Hart, it is FL QB Kevin Sousa that withdraws his commitment from the Maize and Blue instead. Sousa has switched his commitment to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Sousa isn't a highly-rated prospect, and would probably have needed a couple years of development before he was ready to play at this level, but that seemed like the perfect fit for Michigan, as Devin Gardner will be just a second-year player next season.
So, if Michigan still intends to bring in a quarterback in the class of 2011, it seems that OH QB Cardale Jones, a product of Cleveland Glenville High School - infamous for its unfriendly stance toward Michigan - is the top prospect on the board, as NC QB Marquise Williams seems set for Virginia Tech. Though there are only three signal-callers on scholarship for next season, I think it's also an option to leave the position unfilled, and pursue top prospects in the 2012 class.

we should just use this scholly on a defensive player. i know RR wants to bring in a qb in each class, but Cardale doesnt look like a RR type qb He strikes me as a pro style qb. Defensive lineman or linebacker would be nice way to use this scholly.

I was at the U of M Cincy game week lunch before the OSU game, David Brandon was the speaker this year for the lunch… when asked by an OSU alumn about the status of RR… he said he believed RR was in his office. He also pledged that Michigan will be back (paraphrasing here, don’t look too much into my wording). I’m in the camp that if DB wanted RR back, he should have endorsed him by now to help with recruiting. So either DB is on the fence or knows what he wants to do (make a change). I’m not terribly worried about a QB development recruit, but the Dee Hart situation is a little disconcerting.

I think Dave Brandon's statement about this not affecting recruiting might be a bit off. That said, Michigan has some nice talent at QB, so I don't find this as a bad thing.

i assume you mean that josh groban thing. ever met an 18 year old athlete? the step from correlation to causation here is infinitesimal.

Hope he does well for Wake Forest.
December 5th, 2010 at 3:07 PM ^
would be the tits, though ginn sr probably isn't having that.
saw him play live this year, and was pretty impressed. he'd fit right into that 'red shirt a year, play 2-3 years from now' mold imo.

This has been a longtime coming...

forget sousa, focus on 2012
December 5th, 2010 at 3:40 PM ^
As nice as it would've been to have him, we really need defensive recruits or a kicker. Timmy Jernigan, come on down!!!
December 5th, 2010 at 3:51 PM ^
Bold prediction: this won't be a 500 comment post.
December 5th, 2010 at 3:58 PM ^
we have enough QBs anyway...replace him with a solid defensive player.
December 5th, 2010 at 4:01 PM ^
will be ok. Gardner looks like he will be a stud. He should grow under D leadership.
December 5th, 2010 at 4:24 PM ^
Thanks Kevin! Quite honestly we've got no room for a project at QB. Better to use the scholarship on defense. This is a blessing in disguise...

Keep it classy guy...
December 5th, 2010 at 5:13 PM ^
His name is "Webber's Pimp". What did you expect?
December 6th, 2010 at 2:03 AM ^
he didn't really say anything objectionable. very mild sarcasm + honest assessment doesn't really merit a "keep it classy" scold.
December 5th, 2010 at 4:40 PM ^
wait ... The Beav and some other kid decommited and we landed 'Shoes and Tate. This is non - news. Its has been mentioned many times we have other better options ... or none at QB. We can use the schollie for other real needs.
December 5th, 2010 at 4:45 PM ^
Well I'm a bit disappointed but I wish him luck and hope he does well. Wake will be a good situation for him as Grobe runs an offense that should fit his skills.
As for this years class, I'd like to see Michigan pick up a QB as a guy who can redshirt, but also give depth is critical, especially as I worry a bit about Devin and Tate sticking around given the fact it looks like Denard has an iron lock on the job.
December 5th, 2010 at 4:56 PM ^
Is there anything new with the Dee Hart situation. I know it was said somewhere that the coaches were going to give him a visit. Is he just rumored to favoring Alabama or has he actually said it?
December 5th, 2010 at 5:01 PM ^
But I'm firmly in the camp that you should take a quarterback in every recruiting class. I'm not suggesting anything is afoot, but you never know when injury, trasfers, or other attrition will occur. In 2013, if Gardner has to miss a game for some reason, it'd sure be a lot better if his replacement was a junior rather than a sophomore.
I realize you're probably not going to get a superstar, but having a body with a profile that matches your system is good enough for a "depth" QB.

Unless it's written in a very different frame of mind from how I read it, 'decommit you bastards' is a rather distasteful tag. I don't care if Brian started it.
December 5th, 2010 at 10:16 PM ^
When I saw that tag, I knew someone would find an excuse to be offended. I think it's sorta funny, especially since the use of the plural "bastards" doesn't single out any particular player, but is more toward a possible trend.
December 6th, 2010 at 1:27 AM ^
I wouldn't say I'm offended, but I think the Michigan fanbase can do better than disparage decommitting recruits.
To be clear, maybe the Michigan fanbase is, this instant, doing better than disparaging decommitting recuits. Maybe I'm in a different frame of mind than everyone else on this fine Sunday evening. That's just the feel that I get from the tag, and I don't care for it.
December 5th, 2010 at 5:58 PM ^
But seriously Im not really concerned about a QB in this class especially if DG gets his redshirt.
December 5th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
If we don't take a QB in this class and if by some retarded curse we need a 4th qb to take the field next season, I have to think Dallas Crawford could be serviceable at the very least. His high school qb numbers are ridiculous!
December 5th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
Not that I like having ANY class w/o a QB commit, especially with this offense and the running QB, but I want guys who want to play for the school, tradition, education, and Big House experience.
Losing Pryor to OSU (even if he was leaning that way all along), did far more harm to the offense than losing Sousa.
We need the most help at RB, then TE, then OL --- at least as far as offensive play is concerned.
I expect that Devin is going to be getting a medical redshirt (he missed 2/3rds of the season with a "back" issue). That gives us time to build around him in the future.
On D, every position is vital, but a Ty Law and Marlin Jackson kind of CB (I'm not praying for another Woodson, as they are once in a generation player) is my 1st wish. Then physical LB. Then a nose tackle as Martin is a senior next year.
For the record, I remember Lloyd losing a big-time safety from Indiana (Jerimy Finch). The guy decided to go to Indy, then changed his mind to Florida, played sparingly as a True Frosh, got "persuaded" to leave by Urban Meyer, returned to Indy and promptly disappeared (he's still on the roster but I don't recall seeing him on the field).
Ditto Jai Eugene, a guy Lloyd felt that Les "stole" from him.
December 5th, 2010 at 6:54 PM ^
room for defensive recruits. sorry Kevin Michigan is not right for you now and that's okay all around. Go where you feel you'll make the biggest impact for the team and yourself.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:01 PM ^
What about converting Dallas Crawford to a QB?
He seems to be a legitimate, accurate-yet mobile QB prospect. That and he have 2 CBs already committed with T-Wolf coming back next year.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:03 PM ^
Have you seen the state of the secondary? Its not taking DB's or converting them to other positions that has gotten us into this mess. Until we have the luxury of an "upperclassman" in the secondary any and all recruits need to stay there.
December 5th, 2010 at 8:03 PM ^
unless it was absolutely necessary! We need far to much help in the secondary and he was also a stud on defense in high school. I could see RR telling him to spend a little time with the offensive playbook and maybe giving him some garbage practice time with the offense as a contingency plan but that's it.
Honestly I could see Crawford pulling a Woodson and starting on D but also playing some offense as well. I am however, not saying he would hold up to Woodson's legend status as that wouldn't be fair to anyone.
December 5th, 2010 at 7:02 PM ^
He went from my favorite team, to my second favorite team. Cool
December 5th, 2010 at 7:06 PM ^
But, it is hard for me to see why he would want to come, given Denard, Tate, and Devin being here already.
I don't blame this on DB. Nor on RR.
I'm far more concerned about Frost, and Walls, and Zettel, and Dee Hart, for that matter.

Not a Groban fan.
