MBB stickin it to pros
MIchigan Basketball team is beating Mons 50 to 31 at the half.
Vogrich is the leading scorer with 14. Looks like the big difference is that the shots are falling. 7/13 from behind the arc.
This is a Mons team that is supposed to be one of the best teams in the league featuring players like ron lewis form Ohio State and Justin Cage from Xavier.
Looks like if this Michigan basketball team can get the shots to fall relatively consistently, they might surprise a lot of people this year.
Edit: Final Score Michigan 80 Mons 74. Go Blue!!

also we have 20 points in the paint which is extremely encouraging.

I'm an eternal optimist about all things Michigan and I am excited for the upcoming season and to see the new guys contributing. That said, I can't count the number of times recently that I've said/read:
if this Michigan basketball team can get the shots to fall relatively consistently, they might surprise a lot of people
Here's hoping they're getting it figured out. I like John Beilein a lot and I don't want him to be a transitional coach like some are saying. I just hope he can turn things around soon because I think more and more people are getting impatient with him, fairly or unfairly.
EDIT: Just saw the post about points in the paint. To me, that's even better news than the fact that perimeter shots are falling. Thanks!

But they're playing European rules. Michigan probably got a cheap seven points for clearing all three stones from the house, and another 10 for catching the snitch.
Regardless, this does bode well for the team.

There's a reason Carmelo Anthony excels in international play.

looks like we might surprise a few people, but are probably in for a very up and down year.

64-55 Michigan at the end of the 3rd.... Michigan could actually pull off the win here which would vastly exceed all expectations... They were not really supposed to stand a chance in any of these games except the first one against gent.

Good for them! It's tough to get those points in the paint with such a short shot clock. And as far as the 3 pointers go, remember the Euros play with a deeper 3 point line.
Mons is the team Travis Conlan played for before he became an assistant at UM, they are no slouches. The team they played yesterday had Bracey Wright (former IU player if you remember him) and I believe it was Gent that had Chris Hill from MSU. All relatively equal talent to what UofM has on their roster, but much older/mature and with several years of basketball knowledge under their belts already. The fact that we can hang within 15 of these teams on basically 1 weeks practice and some jet lag is pretty good.

the team they lost to by 15 yesterday was ridiculous. I recognized a ton of players on their roster. Guys like Will Thomas from George Mason, Darrel Mitchell from LSU, Caleb Green from Oral Roberts. That team would be heavily favored to win the NCAA.

From the Manny wiki:
On May 3, 2007, the NCAA men's basketball rules committee passed a measure to extend the distance of the men's three-point line a foot back to 20 feet, 9 inches (6.32 m)
And..
In basketball played under FIBA rules, the three-point line is 6.25 meters (20 ft 6 in) from the basket.
I'll leave the 3" jokes to someone else. This is still good news, though.

An earlier tweet from Andrew Beilein stated the 3-point line was closer to NBA distance. Maybe they are using it already to get ready for the season.
August 26th, 2010 at 3:06 PM ^
Exactly. Why would they still be practicing from the old 3 point line when it is moving back for the season?
August 26th, 2010 at 3:16 PM ^
Well... from the rest of the wiki. That move in October is only for major international events. It will be instituted for domestic competitions by 2012.
It seems they've had to make their courts larger to accommodate the line change. So, from that tweet, this court has already been changed.
Thanks Carcajous. Sorry for the confusion.

Vogrich went off and some good play inside. Should be a fun team to watch this year.
edit: except when they rip my heart out.

...points of the game:
@andrewbeilein: And Jordan Morgan to THJR for a backdoor slam! BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE
Me likey.
August 26th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
So a 240 lb forward ooped it to a guard and that was EXPLOSIVE?
EDIT: maybe I imagined the ooping, may have been a backdoor bounce pass, but still...

Glad to hear that we got the win, it looks like the team has really improved since they've been there. I just hope Matt Vogrich can keep the shooting stroke for this season.
August 26th, 2010 at 2:57 PM ^
andrewbeilein Vogrich played 32 min, Novak 27, THJR 25, Morris 23. Darius was also 4/7 from the field (and that included some forced shots).
August 26th, 2010 at 3:41 PM ^
That Vogrich has been our main rebounder this week... but this kind of experience can be such a huge advantage... and this is the perfect year to be doing it... props to the staff for doing this.. hopefully it takes us from a bad to team to a possible NIT team.

Sounds like TH Jr. was greatly underrated by the recruiting services. I'm lovin' it.
(Devil's advocate: "Groomed all his life to play ball (ala Forcier), so he's much closer to his ceiling than other freshmen").
August 26th, 2010 at 4:05 PM ^
encouraging and depressing at the same time.
August 26th, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that THJR and his dad didn't actually talk much about basketball, so I doubt he's at a Forcier-level of life-long grooming.
August 26th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
It sounds to me that, though he's obviously been around the game at a high level his whole life and has a high basketball IQ, he's something of a late bloomer in terms of having everything come together skill-wise. It also sounds like he's done some serious growing in the recent past. I think the ceiling for his game might be pretty high.
