Remove the point system
Given 1) the uproar over Brain's attempts to add some utility to the system and 2) having a post dedicated to "pos-banging", I think it's become pretty clear that the point system is nothing more than a status-quo outlet for the attention-deprived, looking for some misplaced affirmation of their existence. It's become a detriment to the quality of the board since people are too busy jonesing for points instead of providing useful commentary.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:04 AM ^
I think the pos-banging thread was a product of the temporary restrictions placed on the point system. It'll run its course and things will get back to normal.
FWIW, I thought it was fun to have a light-hearted thread after the events of the past couple weeks. While there has been a little noise on the site due to recent events; I see no shortage of useful commentary.
EDIT: BTW, posbang welcome.... ;)

+1, as requested.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:03 AM ^
While I understand where you are coming from, if you glance at the last few posts on the front page, people seem to come here for more than just information.
I know that personally, every time I get on here I laugh my ass off at least twice. I like jokes. I really like football and sports-related jokes. Welcome to the Promised Land.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:04 AM ^
I actually think the point system serves as a self policing method of encouraging quality posts. Granted once you get over a certain threshold points are meaningless, I would say conscientious visitors to this blog are attentive of whether or not they are getting negged or +1'd for any particular post.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:31 AM ^
U smell like ghey balls dood!! LOL tressel is a homo!!! Go BLUE!
How is the above not quality content? I love seeing this 100 times each time I read a Michigan article on Yahoo or ESPN. Matter of fact, I say we neg anybody with a valid point or opinion. Valuable content is not allowed on the internet...
August 19th, 2010 at 10:04 AM ^
best post on the internet.
If he doesnt care about points then he won't mind if I do THIS!! *presses +1 by accident* Oops.
Toasting in an epic bread, btw.
August 19th, 2010 at 10:48 PM ^
God help that I not have to wade through the trogoldyte thinking of the ESPN commentator. Screw that. The OP might not like the point system but it is what it is...and also, regarding the points, it's high time we re-adopted some previous practice in the matter...
August 19th, 2010 at 11:56 AM ^
there is way too much self indulgent crap published. some people only come on here and comment on other posts. and about one in 5 posts could be idiocy on any site.
the points mean nothing. kill the points and have M Go Blog nazis taking down crap.
August 19th, 2010 at 3:45 PM ^
Er, I mean I disagree. Whatever -- I just wanted to come on here and comment on other posts, while also earning a meaningless point. Now that I've achieved my purpose, the post Nazis may take down my self indulgent crap.
Sorta makes you wonder why some people keep coming back to this blog, doesn't it?
August 19th, 2010 at 2:46 PM ^
Ok, but if the purpose of the point system is to be able to neg trolls or even non-trolls for troll-like posts, why is it free to upvote a post but it costs points to downvote a post (effectively forcing you to downvote yourself in order to downvote the bad post)? We just learned that charging for voting kills voting. So, now, pretty much you will have all the orgy upvoting with no down voting. I don't see how that will help limit the bad posts.
August 19th, 2010 at 2:52 PM ^
By changing the upvote from 1pt to 2 pts, it makes it much easier for a troll to get to the 20 pts needed to post and vote. The changes in the voting system actually make trolling easier and reduce whatever benefit the points system brought to the board in the first place.

The manic-depressive swings that have taken place over the last 48 hours are unusual around here. The silly threads yesterday served as a cathartic release for a bunch of folks (like myself) who really spend way too much time dwelling on Michigan football. Things will settle down, unless of course thunder-doom god decides to strike again.

You must not read much during football season

Voting is the American Way, man. How did you even log onto MGoBlog from your Chinese computer, you damn Commie?!?!?!

Racist.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:12 AM ^
Noticing your point total compared to the OP's, it doesn't surprise me that you accuse him (rightly so) of class warfare.

Between Brian, me, Blue in South Bend, and MGoShoe, we've earned enough MGoPoints to purchase the entire island of Crete.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:21 AM ^
I wouldn't do that now. Way too much political turmoil in Crete right now. I'd bankroll the points and save up for the Canary Islands.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:22 AM ^
What part of "secret plan to buy Crete" did you not understand?
August 19th, 2010 at 9:28 AM ^
I thought you said "secrete plan to buy Crete." My bad.
August 19th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
Sounds messy. Are you looking for another investor? What I lack in MGoPoints, I can make up for in secretions (I think).
August 19th, 2010 at 10:42 AM ^
that's a shitty thing to say
August 19th, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
Which part was shitty?
August 19th, 2010 at 10:56 AM ^
Geaux Blue was riffing on your "secretions" line...I think.
August 19th, 2010 at 11:00 AM ^
Secretion in human tissues
Many human cell types have the ability to be secretory cells. They have a well developed endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus to fulfill their function. Tissues in humans that produce secretions include the gastrointestinal tract which secretes digestive enzymes and gastric acid, the lung which secretes surfactants, and sebaceous glands which secrete sebum to lubricate the skin and hair. Meibomian glands in the eyelid secrete sebum to lubricate and protect the eye.
I tend to be human and therefore secrete lots of "stuff". That's all.

Don't worry, it's just another drop in the bowl.

he has this weird thing when he wakes up where his hair is just everywhere and he's ridiculously sleepy/grumpy. i happened to catch him with a polaroid as he woke up. it's likely a yawn

...have we? I had my hopes pinned on Ibiza. I guess with all the MGoInflation, Crete's all we can afford now. I have heard that there's no stoppin' the Cretans from hoppin'. Gabba gabba, hey.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:44 AM ^
OP, if you were looking for an example of the lighthearted OT joking that makes me laugh my ass off, see this entire conversation. This blog is a community, and occasionally that community needs to go off on a math-pun tangent [sic] or have fake GoogleWave coversations or have a jolly ol' posbang.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:47 AM ^
Don't be stingy...it's not like we're dancing monkeys.
Well, maybe Magnus.
(He has the points. He can have the broad shoulders to take it).
August 19th, 2010 at 9:55 AM ^
Thanks for ruining the surprise of my Halloween costume.
I guess I'll have to change my cliche-turned-costume to "Fish in a barrel"...er...uhhh...oops.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:45 AM ^
Magnus spilled the beans, so we're back to the drawing board. There's a great little island just south of here. I don't want to tell the "non-elites" on the board, but it rhymes with "Marbados"
August 19th, 2010 at 10:16 AM ^
And it is because of these three short posts in a row (by Blue in Southbend, Magnus, and MGoShoe) that they have rightfully acquired the needed point to purchase their own little iron.

...your United States Navy is already in Crete. Naval Support Activity Souda Bay is a vital support facility for Navy ships and aircraft. Crete is also home to a NATO range called NAMFI where Navy ships often participate in firing and tracking events.
This has been today's lesson in national security issues.
August 19th, 2010 at 9:58 AM ^
Hey, if I cared about the Navy, I'd join it.
(Also, if I weren't afraid of sharks, large bodies of water, and Leonard DiCaprio's ghost.)

Why did no one throw a mattress overboard? Everyone is flailing around in the water but for some reason there's a random door just floating there? The door is huge, why can't he get on it too? If you have two people, why do they stop talking to each other and let him just fade off? WHY? WHY???
