Are we ever going to actually know what the deal is with all of this? I mean there is a ton of speculation, but will any of the parties actuallly come out with any answers?
If you pay for scout.com you should be able to get the info.
I get negged for telling where Sam's info is in more detail...Sweet!
when MGo has it on the front page for free (and it's very clear). Actually, it shouldn't be free, because we should be donating to Brian (or buying stuff from links).
This is exactly what was in TomVH's interview, and it sounds like it's final unless Rodriguez can successfully fight for his enrollment. I'm not optimistic, but damn. Watching that video shows that everything we hoped would be true about Dorsey probably is. He might not be a genius, but he deserves the chance at a college education he was promised by the university.
He was offered the opportunity to play football and get a one year education for free by the Athletic Department. He wasn't promised anything by the University.
get off their asses and open up a line of communication so this scenario is avoided in the future. Embarrassing.
the athletic department is governed by the university it represents...your point about not being promised anything by the university is disingenuous and ridiculous at the same time.
The fact remains that Dorsey was not promised anything, deservedly so.
Does it suck that he might not have the opportunity to flourish as a person and as an athlete in Ann Arbor? Absolutely. There was definitely a communication breakdown somewhere in the process, which sucks for the two main sides involved. I was just pointing out that "promise" might be too strong of a word. There seems to be a misunderstanding of what a Letter of Intent says and allows for the person signing it. There are actually very few promises by anyone but the athlete when they sign a Letter of Intent. The thing basically says that IF the student is admitted, THEN they can participate in the sport and take classes at the University.
.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but once a student signs a LOI, he can not go elsewhere unless he is released by the University. Seems only fair that the University should not be able to drop him at this stage if nothing new has changed in his life since the LOI was signed unless he agrees to it (crime, grades plummeting, etc.). Seems like a one sided deal favoring the NCAA members, as usual.
That's exactly right. The student is bound to the University until further notice. The university is not bound to the student, per se. Just like scholarships, etc., this is a definite one sided deal.
Why does he deserve the chance? Thousands of students across the country are denied admission each year to U-M, I'd think many of them bring more to the table than Dorsey
It isn't just about his grades and test scores. On paper, at least, the process is supposed to be about the "whole person". Being one of the best athletes in the country shows a dedication and willingness to work hard, (not to mention the effort he showed by getting his grades and scores above minimums). His final few months showed he was willing to do that for Michigan.
The people in Admissions are boobs. Plain and simple.
His athletic abilities, in the eyes of admissions, were more than likely offset by his legal issues. Hard to fault them on that
Those legal issues were well known before his commitment. That should have been figured out months ago.
Rodriguez was not actively recruiting Dorsey until extremely late in the recruiting season. Ever consider that just maybe admissions did not have adequate time to figure out how troubled he actually is?
Then that's a foul-up on the part of Admissions, the athletic department, the football program, or any combination of the above.
Oh well. Better to take long and make a well-informed decision, than to rush it and shoo him in
Well, that's the selfish way of looking at it...
...in the meantime, you have a kid who's been thinking he's going to attend U of M for four months. And now he's not.
And there's a perfectly good reason on why he was not allowed to attend
this guy is right. everyone is talking about the line of communication not being open. well the fact is that it wasnt open during january so hail2009 is just saying that admissions was able to voice their opinion now. he is not saying anything about that shouldve/wouldve/couldve bull. he is just stating the fact. i want dorsey here too, but the truth is he does have a suspect background and close-to-minimum academic credentials. after the feagin incident and other players that they accepted below michigan standards, admissions finally decided this is where they draw the line. get over it and get on with your life.
o ya and no one was crying about witty and other lesser quality players when they got dropped. stop trying to hide the selfish fanatic inside.
Witty's story is completely different.
People were upset about the Adrian Witty fuck up. I was one of them. Also, Adrian Witty didn't have a hit job article written on him.
In most cases, scholarships are offered well before Admissions has enough to make a call on a kid either way, and usually before there's even an application submitted. The process for Admissions probably doesn't start until there's an application.
That exposes the real weakness in the process, and the root cause of an issue that will probably be repeated many more times than we'd like.
The solution, here, is to have Admissions give prospective athletes the once-over, in collaboration with the Athletic Department, before the offer is made.
Unless that's already done. In which case, someone really shat the bed.
You're not going to win this debate. Not here. Not today.
Not here trying to "win a debate."
Never convicted. That's not just a minor distinction.
Such a pathetic reason to still allow him in. "Never convicted!"
Being so righteous? You'd better pray you never get accused of a felony. Its much easier than you'd think. And, considering that 90% of all charges lead to convictions (or so I have been told) your chances of getting past the accusation are slim.
I probably won't be accused of one because I don't put myself in those types of situations. Easy thing to do (unless your name is Demar Dorsey I suppose)
I find that exceedingly hard to believe.
Welp, believe it. Never been accused of one, and probably never will
are you fucking Rosenberg? We have our legal system for a reason. He was charged but never convicted. That means in the eyes of the law, he didnt do anything illegal. Stop being a douchey twatwaffle.
For "douchey twatwaffle". Mind if I use that one?
out into the world young man and spread the bountiful knowledge you have gleened today.
You are the worst.
That Tom's article left the door open a bit, but now it's shut.
Well, it's a good thing that we chose to spend time recruiting Demar Dorsey rather than securing the commitment of Rashad Knight, Sean Parker, or Tony Grimes . . .
Yeah, that is the only way of looking at it. Maybe RR planned everything to happen exactly how it did so he could be fired this year...
that admissions denied the kid? Okaaaaay....
No, I didn't.
I've said several times over the past few days that Michigan should have figured out whether he was "admittable" prior to accepting his LOI. Waiting this long screws over Dorsey, screws over the football team, is bad PR, and could seriously hurt Michigan's future recruiting efforts, especially in Florida.
that we may not have spent any time late in the recruiting cycle on a kid that admissions was definately going to deny, when we had several other options that we could have persued with those resources.
^ This. ^
take two of the three DB(Knight, Parker and Dorsey) to finish off the class. Parker was a silent commit to Michigan since Army All-American week until he changed his mind at the last minute. Was it RR's fault that Parker had a last minute change of heart? No.
I'm fine with a school not wanting to take a chance on a particular kid. I just think that decision needs to be made before he gets offered a scholarship.
Poor form by the higher-ups.
Definitely sucks that Demar won't be given his chance at U of M. No matter where he ends up I will definitely be pulling for him. He is a great example of doing everything in his power to turn things around after some self destructive behavior.
Best of luck to him.
Maybe at least Harbaugh will eat some crow after this. Probably not though.
