Think about the brightside, at least Michigan's offense isn't as bad as US Soccer.

Unfortunately I think Michigan's offense is worse... US putting up 4 goals last week was the equivalent of Michigan scoring 40 points, which they can't do against terrible defenses.

Couldn't be a more fair result.

The Dutch have a much harder path. We are in possibly the easier qualifying regions and can't get out shit together.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:23 PM ^
Yeah. This was their UEFA qualifying group: France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Bulgaria, Belarus and Luxembourg. Only the group winner is guaranteed a WC bid; the runner-up has to win a playoff next month. The Dutch finished tied for second but lost on goal differential to Sweden.
Not very analogous to our situation.

They'd all be in if they played in CONCACAF.
We couldn't even do that much in the weakest confederation.

This Costa Rica group is the best Central American team ever, and it isn't close. There's nothing shameful in finishing behind them.
Concacaf probably doesn't deserve more than two slots though. That's just FIFA throwing the weak continental federations a bone.

I just want to give Costa Rica their due. It's a small country, they don't have all that much talent, but at least their organization is world class. They could not possibly be better than they are.

About this program, is that the sideline announcer at halftime said they came out with a ho-hum attitude.
That reflects directly on Gulati and Arena.

Both need to get fired asap

We need him to talk shit about Michigan Football then if he has that kind of motivational ability.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:03 PM ^
Yeah, all those countries never wanted to beat the big bad old USA until Trump came along. They were just worshiping us from the sidelines until today.
STFU.

What in actual fucking fuck....
October 10th, 2017 at 10:01 PM ^
The obvious silver-lining to the USMNT losing tonight: less soccer coverage in the states next summer, and less soccer coverage on this site. Yay!
October 10th, 2017 at 10:29 PM ^
Give me a break dude. Do you want the US to skip the next Olympics too so you don’t have to suffer all the coverage?
October 10th, 2017 at 10:03 PM ^
Sports are dead to me now. I'm gonna get a lot of work done this year. This should've been the most talented US team in... ever? Just didn't show up throughout the whole qualifying. Didn't deserve it.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:04 PM ^
God help us if they now hire a MLS coach.

We've just seen the last of a lot of guys . . . Howard . . . Dempsey . . . Altidore . . .

October 10th, 2017 at 10:10 PM ^
Sad about Howard and Dempsey. I'm in the minority, but not a huge Altidore fan later in his career.
Last time we see Geoff Cameron and Fabian Johnson too. Those guys are going to be too old for the next WC.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:15 PM ^
I feel the opposite about Altidore actually. I always thought he was overrated until the last handful of games I've seen he's finally scored some goals and been active. Dempsey has always produced at all levels including in high pressure situations and his farewell will hurt the most.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:18 PM ^
Hopefullty add Bradley to that list as well.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:24 PM ^
We haven't seen him for four years. He's already been gone.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:06 PM ^
October 10th, 2017 at 10:09 PM ^
Bradley has been a god awful midfielder since we played Portugal last WC.
Dude is just bad.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:13 PM ^
Yup. His play fell off a cliff when he came back to the mls. The lean years of youth development of players born in the 90s really hurt us in the MF.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:15 PM ^
Players have to be playing top level soccer. Youth development didn't fail Bradley; it's his adult development that's been a disaster.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:19 PM ^
His play fell off at Roma as well.

I put both those goals on Howard shockingly. He is one of the best players in US history and played like the biggest bum of all today. The first goal he jumped about a full second too early when he probably could have taken two more steps back and batted that over the bar with barely a jump, and the second goal he froze up like a high school goalie staring down Ronaldo. The second one was at least a fantastic shot but I expect Howard to make that save every time. The first one I expect him to make every time and make it look easy.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:21 PM ^
That first goal was ALL on Omar Gonzalez...lazy defending and horrible clearance. Omar was by far the worst player on the pitch. Chirst he blasted it once to T&T with Pulisic calling for the ball 10 feet away. He is just not a good player.
October 10th, 2017 at 10:57 PM ^
Side-footed into the upper 90 with wicked spin, goalie had no chance.
Too bad it was his own net.
